Encore Wireless Enuwi-N 802.11N Wireless Usb Adapter Review

Encore Wireless Enuwi-N 802.11N Wireless Usb Adapter
Average Reviews:

I bought this product because it was the cheapest adapter i could find and it was a good choice. I opened the box and it had the usb adapter, a usb extension, and the set-up disc. I set it up using the included the disc that also contained the manual as a .pdf file. Everything set up and it required a restart so i did. Everything loaded up and it connected to my DIR-655 wireless b/g/n router. At first i only got speeds of 130-150Mbps and thats because my router was not using channel bonding and was using 20MHz. changed my router settings to 20/40MHz auto(channel bonding) and i got the full 270-300Mbps. By the way if you have neighbors using wireless n, channel bonding won't work because of the interference, so get a router thats 5.0GHz not 2.4GHz.

I purchased this product solely because of its compatibility with Mac OS X, as my internal wireless card is "unpredictable" at best. However, I couldn't figure out which driver to use to install the Panda USB because the Mini CD that ships with the package is not readable by the internal CD/DVD drive found in my MacBookPro -- the drive doesn't have a retractable tray to which the mini disk can be coupled. Thus began my aggravations with the purchase of this adapter. The website for this product at [...] has the drivers for Mac, Linux, and Windows but no instructions to follow for installation. That's helpful. I was glad to download the driver over a 15k link if I could only tell what driver number applies to my wireless device. There is not a mention of the manufacturers model number anywhere on the adapter, on the packaging, or in the brief brochure that is included in the retail box. Once I am able to figure out that this card is RT3070 and download the software, the device remains unusable. The Ralink wireless manager software reports that the card is connected to my network, yet my ISR/access point does not show an association, and consequently an IP address isn't assigned to the device. However, there is no convincing the proprietary wi-fi manager that the adapter isn't actually associated. Lovely. Thinking that I may be able to use it on the Linux OS that dual boots on my laptop, I load up Fedora 11 and download the Linux driver from the RaLink website. Too bad that I cannot figure out how to get the installation going now that I have the driver. I don't know if it is not compatible with my distro or what. And where are the customers supposed to get the supposed one year technical support? The link from the manufacturers website immediately prompts the end user for username and password credentials without providing a link for one to use to create an account. I give up -- its a loss and a total waste of money. Had I known about the shoddy support and lack of documentation I would not have taken a chance on this product, let alone its inability to function in the Mac OS X environment. Caveat Emptor.

The DWL-AB520 enables IT managers to plan for future network growth or to immediately expand their wireless network infrastructure when available wireless channels have already been tapped out. The additional high-bandwidth channels available with 802.11a also offer users on the network a robust way to transmit large data files much quicker than what was possible with 802.11b. Network administrators have the option of overlaying an 802.11a network on top of an existing 802.11b network, essentially creating another wireless network of 802.11a users who can communicate discreetly with one another. The DWL-AB520 is IEEE 802.11a- and 802.11b-compliant and interoperable with other 802.11a- and 802.11b-compliant devices.Unlike previous wireless PCI adapters, the DWL-AB520 features a high-gain external antenna that can be positioned in any number of configurations to achieve the best possible signal. When communicating in the 802.11a bandwidth, the D-Link DWL-AB520 also provides a level of security not previously achievable from other standard wireless solutions. The Atheros 802.11a chipset's utilization of the latest data encryption standard, AES along with 802.1x for user authentication provides a much more formidable barrier to hackers and sniffers, allowing users to share confidential or time-sensitive data with a much greater sense of security. The DWL-AB520 also provides the option to utilize 152-bit WEP with dynamic keying along with 802.1x user authentication to secure 802.11a transmissions. When used with D-Link's other 802.11a and multimode access points and routers, the DWL-AB520 offers a quick, out-of-box solution to instantly expand a company's network.

What I look for in most products is reliability. I only want to buy it once! This item works as advertised.
It's compatible with the two systems I tried so far; Windows7 and XP. And it's fast.
If your wondering how long the attached cable will last, it seems sturdy enough to see many years of normal use. This is a quality item. I doubt anyone buying this adapter will be disappointed. Enjoy!

Arkview Network Device USB 2.0 Share Hub

Just got the Arkview USB server share device for the primary function of sharing a printer on my home network. The good news is that setup could not have been easier and it works like a champ for printer sharing (and this evenis an old parallel port job that I use with a parallel to USB cable). So far so good. Also tried to share a couple of USB flash drives...works like a champ again. The only problem I have is it apparently is not compatible with my Memorex DVD drive. It finds it and connects fine but when you try to view it on any PC it simply shows one file, which it thinks is some kind of Audio cd analog file and no matter what CD or DVD you put in it simply shows that same one file. So a mixed bag. Otherwise if you stick to the drives on the compatibility list I am sure you will be fine. Good solid product, easy setup and easy connection software. That's about all.

Also DON'T even try to use the driver disc it comes with...not readable on one computers' drive and readable but has too many errors from another. I had to go to their website and dl the driver install setup program....and that didn't work...I THEN had to install the driver update. Drivers seem to work fine. The interface GUI is CRAP as well.

Netgear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter Review

Netgear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
having been in the computer business professionally for nearly a decade, and a hobbyist for twice that long, I've become very jaded about product performance claims. My rule of thumb is to take whatever is claimed on the box, and divide by two. But once in a while, even I am pleasantly surprised when a product does exactly what is promised. This dual band wireless N wifi adapter is one such product. I made this purchase so that I could stream 1080p movies, with DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from a NAS 12ft away from my WDTV Live, which is directly wired into my Netgear WNDR3700. What this means is that I needed a card capable of ~25Mbps sustained throughput, with burst throughput of somewhere around 60Mbps to eliminate stutter
I started this endeavor with the purchase of the D-Link DWA556, thinking mistakenly that it was a dual band card capable of 5Ghz. It was not. Nevertheless, I gave it a chance, as it's theoretically possible to reach ~60Mbps with wireless N, even on the 2.4Ghz. But alas, no matter how I tweaked my channels, I couldn't get anything more then 30Mbps, max out of that card and my router. Then I gave up on the DLink, and instead bought this card. If I could've gotten anything close to 60Mbps out of this thing, I would've been very happy. Man was I surprised. I have gotten a sustained throughput of about 112Mbps, with a max of 150Mbps, and a minimum never dropping below 90Mbps. I tested by copying a 16GB file from my NAS to a laptop hooked directly into the router via gigabit ethernet. The entire copy took 17 minutes and 14 seconds, for an average of 126Mbps. The second test was to copy the same file from the NAS to my Macbook pro, which is also on the 5Ghz network. That process averaged about 48Mbps. Not great, but not bad at all.
Needless to say, all my streaming problems disappeared. No more stuttering on the busy action sequences in Avatar. No more stuttering on the initial car chase sequence in Quantum of Solace either. All in all, I am very satisfied with this purchase. The installation was completely painless. Plugged the stick into my NAS, running windows 7, and the the system found drivers for it online, and installed everything without any intervention. You do not need the software CD or drivers from Netgear's website at all, if you have a modern OS like Windows 7. However be warned that Windows 7, out of the box, does not come with drivers for this card. In other words, you cannot rely on Windows 7 to recognize this wireles card during it's initial install on a clean system. For that, you will need the CD. But after the card is functional, you can simply grab the latest drivers from windows update.
My only complaint, if there is to be one, is that the range for the 5Ghz radio is not that great. As I mentioned earlier, my NAS is 12 ft away, and without direct line of sight of the router. And yet, the signal on the 5Hz radio, according to the Netgear software was already at 84%. The negotiated link speed was consistently around 270 to 300 Mbps. So performance wasn't a problem. But, when I moved the card to another machine in the master bedroom, which is about 100ft away, separated by 3 walls, the signal strength on the 5Ghz network has dropped to 23%. I didn't bother to test the throughput in this case. Most likely, streaming HD is out of the question, though general web browsing is most likely unaffected.
To be fair though, this could just be the inherent limitation of the 5Ghz network, as higher frequency transmissions do not refract well, and the signal strength is known to drop off rather dramatically as distance increases, particularly when obstacles are present (like walls). This card may in fact perform on par with the rest of the dual band wireless cards out there, or maybe does even a little better then average. I can't say, as I haven't tried any other cards. But from a practical stand point, if you want to stream HD content with this card, then keep it close to your router. To be fair, reception for the 2.4Ghz network from the master bedroom was no problem at all. Windows 7 shows full signal strength.
All in all, I have been very happy with this purchase, and would recommend this card to anyone without reservation.
UPDATE:
There are actually two versions of this card: The WNDA3100v1, and WNDA3100v2. If you found this page, then you are looking at the v2, which is a great card. The V1, however, is complete crap, and should be avoided at all costs. Lost of dropped connections, and instability with certain routers.

Actiontec Wireless USB Network Adapter (Black) Review

Actiontec Wireless USB Network Adapter (Black)

I got this adapter for my older laptop that does not have a built in "N" card. It was easy to install with Vista OS, real plug and play. Once installed, it was able to see almost all networks in my area, and connected easily to my network. I moved my laptop around the house, out to the backyard, no problems. All in all, it is a nice addition to older machines.
Pros: Driver is already stored on the adapter and installs automatically when you plug it in.
Quick and easy installation, plug it in, and in a few munities you're done.
Received signal thru walls, and far from the modem.
Speed is about average both up and down stream.
Cons: Too large and unsuitable for laptops, will block the adjacent USB port unless you use the USB extension cable.
Will not work with Mac.
As other reviewers noted, the package is hard to open, environmentally unfriendly, and too large. I wish they packed it in a small box.

Cisco-Linksys Range Plus Wireless USB Compact Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys Range Plus Wireless USB Compact Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The big problem with this adapter, is that if you use windows XP (which many people still do) and you have Service Pack 3 (which 99% of XP users do) it will work for a few weeks and then not work anymore, as I experienced and was later told by Linksys support. The adapter works fine with Windows Vista, XP - SP1 or SP2 -just not SP3. The specifications on the product packaging do not specify this issue and after calling Linksys 4 or 5 times perhaps you will get a representative who knows enough to inform you of the issue. Almost everyone who has XP has SP3. When an XP user installs updates SP3 will eventually be installed unless they manually install updates and refuse to install it. New Windows XP installations are SP3 at this point unless you specifically get SP2 (Which most people won't) so there is really no point in installing this adapter with Windows XP, unless you can uninstall XP3 as an update or install Windows XP SP2 and manually not install SP3. I was told by Linksys support to purchase Linksys Wusb54gsc, since it was made compatible with XP SP3. While the phone support was somewhat helpful and expedient, the company's customer satisfaction standards are pretty low. They refused to take this product back and send me the right adapter even though they were 100% at fault. Another company that doesn't really care about their customers - imagine that. Linksys should: ----- A) stop selling these adapters to Windows XP users ----- B) List the problem with XP SP3 on the package under compatibility ----- C) Issue a recall for all XP SP3 users and either replace the adapter with one that works with this application or fix current adapter. The good:
Received the product quickly and plugged it in and was up and running at N speed in ~10 seconds, not too shabby. Speed was far and above what I ever got with G, and it works all over my house.
The less than good:
Despite the 300mps claim, I'm pretty sure that the theoretical max of this card is locked at 150mps, and unlike every other wireless card I've ever used, the reported speed does not lower automatically based on real time performance statistics, it always says "150mps".
Why oh why do companies insist on putting OUTRAGOUSLY bright blue lights on things? I had to put a piece of electrical tape over the blue light because it was lighting my bedroom...
It also gets pretty darned hot - which so long as it keeps running doesn't bother me, but experience has shown me that devices that run really hot don't tend to last.
Overall a good product, but I can't give it 5 stars.

Buffalo Technology Nfiniti Wireless-N High Power Compact Client USB 2.0 Adapter WLI-UC-G300HP Review

I have this paired with the Nfiniti Wireless-N High Power Router & Access Point WZR-HP-G300NH. I selected this usb wireless adapter after trying others and getting disconnects. I am happy to tell you that the disconnects have gone away. I am using the wireless tool for management, and have had no issues with it.
The router is the key to range and throughput, however, I can tell you that this wireless adapter has made a difference. I have used D-Link, cisco, and belkin wireless adapters, both pcmcia and usb, and none of them have given me this range or throughput with the same router.
I love the little antenna on it, I can tell the difference when it is up verses down. One caution, this is not a small or tiny adapter, although most others are not either.
This adapter comes with a neat little usb extension that is like a stiff, short cable. However, I wanted to share with you a device I found that I paired with this adapter that I like better. The Cables To Go - 30501 - FlexUSB USB A Male to A Female Adapter (Black) allows you to angle the adapter sideways, up, or whatever, without getting in the way.
