Long Range 802.11G Indoor Ap Review

Bought this AP in January 2010. Worked fine for several months - nice features, good range. Then it just died. I tried to contact Bountiful, but the company does not seem to exist any more. Very disappointing.

Works very well. It was a drop in replacement for a DLink Access point. It is faster and only a little bigger. The biggest problem with the unit is: If there is a power loss for a short time, the unit does not restore itself to a working condition. It will need to be unplugged for a few minutes and then plugged in again for it to restore to normal working order. It will recover the configuration and start up properly.

Netgear HE102 802.11a Wireless Access Point Review

Netgear HE102 802.11a Wireless Access Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research before purchasing a solution for my home wireless network. I read a lot of horror stories about people having a hard time setting things up, connections dropping, etc., so I was a little spooked about spending a lot of money for something that might be a pain. Boy was I in for a surprise.
I picked this NetGear product because I have had good experiences with their products in the past, and hadn't really heard anything particularly bad about this product. When it arrived, I was VERY impressed. I simply plugged it in, connected it to my Ethernet hub, put my new network card into my laptop (I bought the NetGear HA501 at the same time), and viola! It just worked! No complicated setting to configure, nothing to change on my laptop, my network, nothing. And its range is outstanding.
Also, for those of you trying to decide between 802.11a and 802.11b, choose 802.11a. While you might see just a little perceived increase in speed, the reliability of your connection is so much better. With 802.11a you don't have to worry about microwaves, cell phones, cordless phones, and other devices interfering. With 802.11b there is so much interference that connections can (and do) drop or be very flaky.
Good luck!

Dual Panda Wifi (b/g/n) 150Mbps Wireless-N 2.4GHz USB Adapters (One in White and One in Black) - Windows 7, Mac OS X and Fedora Linux Compatible
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product solely because of its compatibility with Mac OS X, as my internal wireless card is "unpredictable" at best. However, I couldn't figure out which driver to use to install the Panda USB because the Mini CD that ships with the package is not readable by the internal CD/DVD drive found in my MacBookPro -- the drive doesn't have a retractable tray to which the mini disk can be coupled. Thus began my aggravations with the purchase of this adapter. The website for this product at [...] has the drivers for Mac, Linux, and Windows but no instructions to follow for installation. That's helpful. I was glad to download the driver over a 15k link if I could only tell what driver number applies to my wireless device. There is not a mention of the manufacturers model number anywhere on the adapter, on the packaging, or in the brief brochure that is included in the retail box. Once I am able to figure out that this card is RT3070 and download the software, the device remains unusable. The Ralink wireless manager software reports that the card is connected to my network, yet my ISR/access point does not show an association, and consequently an IP address isn't assigned to the device. However, there is no convincing the proprietary wi-fi manager that the adapter isn't actually associated. Lovely. Thinking that I may be able to use it on the Linux OS that dual boots on my laptop, I load up Fedora 11 and download the Linux driver from the RaLink website. Too bad that I cannot figure out how to get the installation going now that I have the driver. I don't know if it is not compatible with my distro or what. And where are the customers supposed to get the supposed one year technical support? The link from the manufacturers website immediately prompts the end user for username and password credentials without providing a link for one to use to create an account. I give up -- its a loss and a total waste of money. Had I known about the shoddy support and lack of documentation I would not have taken a chance on this product, let alone its inability to function in the Mac OS X environment. Caveat Emptor.

U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg PC Card ( USR5411 ) Review

U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg PC Card ( USR5411 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally, with the U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg PC Card (USR5411), my laptop is able to successfully tap into my wired network (via my U.S. Robotics MAXg Access Point)!
For some reason, my SMC adapter card would not function correctly with the U.S. Robotics access point. Duh, you say? I really thought cards, access points, routers were interchangable! The SMC card would sometimes access the U.S. Robotics Access Point but would cut me off, and most of the time, the card would receive a strong signal but not gain access to the network. An IT tech couldn't even fix it. Anyway, it's been smooth speedy sailing and seamless secure access with the U.S. Robotics card. Setup was a breeze.
Although U.S. Robotics isn't know for wireless equipment, and it was highly recommended that I purchase an adapter and card from a company known for wireless equipment (i.e., Netgear, Linksys, SMC or D-Link) the cost of the U.S. Robotics items is was what sold me and the name (all of my previous computers had U.S. Robotics modems (remember modems folks?) that worked reliably for years!
If you're in the wireless equipment market, seriously give U.S. Robotics network equipment a consideration.

My husband has a computer business and has purchased 5 of these devices for various customers. Each and every one of them have failed. Three of them within the 3 months Netgear will provide free support for and two of them after 1 year.
When they work they don't work so well, a lot of disconnects, and network not found. Working with support stated that too many wireless networks in a congested area will cause this. Understandable, but hardware failures are not understandable.
Out of the five of them, Netgear has replaced the three that failed withing the 90 period and they have been taken out of service since then. There were too many network disconnects to be useful.
When they fail the power light comes on, but nothing else. No network light when the cat5 cable is plugged into it, nor does the wireless work on the device either.
My husband made the mistake of purchasing them when they were fairly new and paid over 170.00 per. What a mistake. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS AS IT IS JUNK.

The NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition lets you easily set up a wireless network in your home so you can share a single internet connection with everyone in your household at speeds up to 300 Mbps. You can stream music and video, make internet phone calls, videoconference, and surf the web, all at the same time.
Easy Setup The WN802T makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your LAN into the device and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WN802T offers a myriad of placement options by including a stand for vertical placement and also a wall-mount kit.
The WN802T employs a web-based interface for configuration for compatibility with any computer with a web browser. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your access point will always be up-to-date.
New Technology Means Blazing Speeds and Backwards Compatibility The WN802T complies with the latest 802.11n draft specification which allows for speeds up to 300 Mbps; this maximum speed can be achieved when used with other TopDog devices. By utilizing MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology, the WN802T has speed and range far surpassing the older 802.11g standard. The preset antennas in the access point ensure that the device is always tuned for optimal performance, and NETGEAR's Wi-Fi Multimedia technology optimizes audio, video, and voice applications.
By using Gigabit Ethernet for the backend, you'll be certain that the access point is receiving data at the highest possible speeds, ensuring the 300 Mbps wireless throughput is not going to waste.
If you still have computers that use 802.11g or 802.11b, don't fret as the access point is backwards compatible with the older wireless standards and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network. The access point will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.
Security Made Easy NETGEAR's Touchless WiFi Security makes it quick and easy to set up network security on a WiFi network by asking for a passphrase from the user. The WN802T supports WiFi Protected Access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK), and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for 802.11b/g networks. Additionally, you can set security through MAC address authentication, allowing only authorized users onto the network. There is also support for 802.1x RADIUS support with EAP TLS, TTLS, and PEAP.
The NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Ubiquiti Networks PICO2 2.4GHz 802.11bg Review

Ubiquiti Networks PICO2 2.4GHz 802.11bg
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a really nice, really small device that can act as an access point (transmit a wireless signal), or as a station (receive a wireless signal), which is also known as a "client-bridge". Confusion abounds though regarding the specifications of this cool device...
First off, the photo in the Amazon listing is that of a Ubiquiti Nanostation. The Picostation is much smaller and has an external antenna connector. I chose this model not just because of its small size, but also because it has that antenna connector. This makes the unit MUCH more flexible than a model with only a built-in antenna, because you can swap to an antenna with more gain than the provided 6dBi one if need be, or use a directional antenna rather than the supplied 360 degree omni antenna. Or you can simply fit it with a higher gain omni.
Furthermore, there is confusion about how powerful the Picostation is. Some descriptions rate the output at 100 milli-watts, while other descriptions put it at 1,000 milli-watts. The Ubiquity website adds to the confusion with a poor link to the product page. It is here: [...]. Per the Ubiquiti datasheet for the Picostation2, it rates the power output at up to 100mw (though at the highest connection speed of 54Mb/s this figure actually drops to 32mw). The claims of up to 1,000mw I believe is either a typo or it has to do with "Effective Radiated Power" (ERP), which is the actual power generated, and varies according to several factors, primarily the choice of antenna. If you take the amount of power the Picostation generates at its fastest connection speed of 54Mb/s, which again is 32mw, and multiply that by the gain you get from the supplied 6dBi antenna (there is a formula for this), you get 125mw of effective power. However, if you instead mate the Picostation with an easily found 15dBi antenna you get, count 'em, 1,000mw of effective (actual) radiated power. That's why I like external antenna connectors. ;>
Having said all that, "power" is just one aspect of getting a fast, reliable wireless connection. Too many variables to state here, but as a real life example the Picostation I purchased replaced an Engenius brand wireless unit rated at 400MW. Both have acted as a "client bridge" (a receiving station connected to a computer), receiving a wireless signal from a 400MW Access Point with a high gain directional antenna. The Picostation slipped into the environment without incident, with the supplied antenna, even though it's theoretically less powerful than the unit it replaced.
Another point of confusion is with the various Picostation models. There seem to be three. This one being reviewed is simply the "Picostation2". This is a 2.4Ghz device that works on the wireless "b" and "g" standards (2.4Mhz). There is also the "M2HP" version, which utilizes Ubiquiti's proprietary AirMax wireless technology. You can achieve speeds up to 150Mb/s throughput, but it requires an Airmax capable model on both ends of the link. No need to spend the extra money for this model unless you meet that criteria. Finally, there is a 5Ghrz model that operates with the "a" standard (5mhz). Some, but not all, wireless cards in laptops can receive "a" signals as well as "b" and "g" signals.
All said and done, I am a big fan of the Ubiquiti line, and as a consultant I have switched to this line exclusively for my client's wireless networking needs.

Netgear ME101 802.11b Wireless Bridge Review

Netgear ME101 802.11b Wireless Bridge
Average Reviews:

This has got to be one of the worst wireless products to come out of Netgear.
If you want a reliable unit, buy something else.
If you want something easy to configure and install, buy something else.
If you want something that won't get confused when it starts seeing your neighbor's wireless access point, buy something else.
If you would like to be able to call technical support and get a meaningful response, buy something else.
This thing locks up all the time. Sometimes it lasts 15 minutes, sometimes you might get 30 minutes of use out of it. Then you have to power cycle it to make it work again for another 15 minutes. I have tried to mate it to wireless access points made by Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, Adaptec, Cisco. I have tried having only one AP "visible" in its pitiful range; having multiple access points; upgrading the firmware. Nothing changes its behavior of random locks after a relatively short period of time from the moment you turn it on.
Finally, if you don't want to end up like me writing reviews on here, BUY SOMETHING ELSE! Anything.
It can not possibly be any worse than this utter failure and ripoff.

Average Reviews:

I read the prior reviews but went ahead and bought this on the advise of a friend who intalls wireless networks for a living and he uses this access point a lot. I am completly pleased with this Linksys product. When you plan to use it for what it is designed for, an Access point, and don't have any notions that it is anything more, it chugs right along. I ran CAT 6 cable, (keeping under 300 meters total length) and used the AC adaptor supplied to power the unit. It is ran off a Linksys wireless-N router and a 5 station Linksys Workgroup hub. I mounted it in the downstairs coat closet behind my TV room and turned on my laptop, found it, and connected. I then entered it's webbased setup utility and configured it to my liking, (WPA2 security to match my wireless router) and I works like a charm. I am writing this review on my laptop, in my bedroom, where my upstairs router alone could never reach. I now have full bar service all over my complete property, inside and out. It is just what was needed.

UBIQUITI NANOSTATION 2 LOCO 802.11B/G WIRELESS CPE Review

UBIQUITI NANOSTATION 2 LOCO 802.11B/G WIRELESS CPE
Average Reviews:

Purchased elsewhere.
Pro:
Once you spent some time researching, this thing worked. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to set up once you have the instructions (even for the non-network computer pro). BEWARE upgrading firmware! (see below)Con:
Assumes you have networking experience with these devices as there is no enclosed printed manual (not even a simple setup sheet which is available if you research the forums!). Labeling is wrong from PoE to Nano and can fry your computer if connected wrong (connect on the Nano LAN socket with Cat 5 cable to the PoE socket on the PoE power supply AND with a cat 5 cable connect the LAN on the PoE power supply to your LAN card)! Must search website for specific instructions - ie to setup for Free public WiFi, hit or miss search. No clear instructions to setup IP address on the computer to access the device - just typing in 192.168.1.20 doesn't work unless you set up your LAN connection first (instruction buried on website). Instructions are scattered all over the website - no clear instructions for easy setup. Instuctions are tedious and incomplete. Trouble with firmware release v 3.5 - AirOS (see below). Clearly a beta release for all. Not for the non technical person at all. Network experts may screw up their system by upgrading to firmware v 3.5. What a mess!
The labeling is wrong. On the Nano device it should say PoE (not LAN) so you connect this end to the PoE. It is mislabeled LAN. Do not connect this to your LAN. There should be a wiring diagram and the instructions should be arranged in order in a single area on the website. Hunting for info is a NO NO as is the serious mislabeling issue. NOT a 'plug and play' - a 'plug and fix and research and ask and fix and pray'! Must have time to waste to set it up correctly (because of the missing instructions). And for techies, trouble abounds if you have an expensive customer set up and upgrade your older firmware to v 3.5 - clearly this version of AirOS is NOT ready for prime time and will cause headaches for some experts let alone the non techie. After investing time trying to just find instructions to setup the Nano for a free public WiFi access, I found buried, in one of the forums, a person who wrote a short highly detailed easy guide with step by step instructions (see Comment for the link) which the manufacturer failed to include in the product box ( because they didn't write it and assume you are a network pro ). The instructions included with the Nano are printed on the outside of the box and are crappy. Again, there is NO enclosed setup manual nor CD. Advise that you search the website for info before you buy and read the forums. There are problems with AirOS firmware v 3.5. Some network experts have upgraded their systems from earlier versions to v 3.5 and have had numerous problems with the upgraded system shutting down. These are pros who do network installation for a living. There is a lively debate on this. The company at first denied it. Now it is working to fix this problem. My advice is that if it works, do not upgrade your firmware to the current v 3.5. Leave it alone. Some have reported that even after flashing back to a prior version, some problems still remained!
Please read the forums on this mess. This device would be rated higher if the company included proper set up instructions instead of hiding them and fixes the problem with the firmware v 3.5 (should not have been released).

Products Tested: D-Link DWL-1000AP 11Mb Wireless LAN Access Point 802.11b D-Link DWL-650 11Mb Wireless PCMCIA LAN Network Card 802.11b vs. Linksys WAP11 - Instant Wireless Network Access Point Linksys WPC11 - Instant Wireless Network PC Card
Computer Hardware: Laptop: Dell Inspiron 600mhz, W2k Network: NT 4.0 Server, W2K Server Switches: 3Com and Linksys
Quality: After working with dlink first, linksys blew away dlink on the feel of quality and workmanship. As we all know, these components are so miniaturized that they could put them into any light-weight enclosure. dlink chose the light packaging approach....feels "cheap." linksys chose the mid-weight package...you feel as if it has higher quality...and you got something for your $250-300! linksys chose the dual antenna design over the single on the dlink. Technically, I am not sure if it is better but the actual reception really is... These are subjective and personal factors but for most, it makes a difference.
Ease of Use: From the documentation, to the support, to the software, it is really apparent dlink cut costs everywhere and with things they shouldn't. The setup is extremely confusing, the software is buggy...really, and the docs are horrible. In my manual, every other page did not have printing on it...quality control missed this! Linksys...even though I had to use the USB setup at first (dlink does not have a USB port on their access unit), the configuration was simple. The docs actually explained the parameters on the configuration screens. Once I set the IP address to one recognized on my network (I am not using DHCP), I used the linksys SNMP configuration tool to set and adjust the other parameters. I have a laptop. When using the wireless network card on the dlink, if you eject the card, the next time you re-insert the card, it does not remember your setting. You have to go back and set the parameters in order to get the card to function again. I called dlink tech support on this...on hold forever, hung up, and no call back...even when they asked and I left my mobile number, just in case... On the linksys, when I re-inserted the wireless card, it remembered the setting.
Service and Usability: Both products have a signal and quality meter in their utilities. One important note...the distance specs on both of these products (I think the 802.11b category overall) are NOT accurate. Inside of your home and through walls, etc., expect much less. How much less...you need to try it out to be sure. If you have line of sight to the access unit, these distances will go up. I mounted the access unit in my living room, on top of the entertainment center. I chose this location b/c it had the best reception. With the dlink, in the master bedroom (through one wall!), I was *barely* able to use the network...0-40 on the signal meter. On one occasion, once the dlink card lost the network, I could not get back on?? The total distance to the access unit was 30ish feet. With linksys, my signal was consistent at 40-60...once or twice is dipped to 20-30 but came right back up. I also tried a configuration with the dlink access unit and linksys card. They did work together but I could not improve the signal quality. I concluded that the dlink access unit was one of the problems. When I used the dlink wireless card, several times my computer shut down automatically??
Overall: Save tons of time and money...just buy the linksys system...access point and cards. Linksys is priced well and makes a quality offering. It is very clear to me that dlink is just focused on price and cutting their cost.
