(More customer reviews)I have been running Netgear ProSafe networking equipment for many years for my small office at home. Due to its typically high reliability, performance and value I always stick with the prosafe line (geared toward business or enterprise use) over the consumer grade networking gear which is often unreliable. This is the first 802.11n unit that I found which was designed for the enterprise. So I broke down and picked it up for about $300 with shipping. The most important thing to know about this unit is that despite their advertising this unit as a dual band with both 802.11n and 802.11abg radios; the radios cannot both be used at the same time. You can only turn on one or the other. This is a major limitation as far as I'm concerned. For those of us replacing old 802.11g equipment my preference would be for this unit to be able to support 802.11g legacy clients with one of the radios and also be able to support 802.11n 5ghz clients with the other 5ghz radio.
The range of the unit in 5ghz 40 mhz mode is quite short. Definately less than the WG102 802.11g unit that it was replacing. Since the range is so short I will have to get an additional unit and put it upstairs. Also, the firmware is a bit buggy and reliability doesn't seem as good as the mature wg102 unit. I'm certain that reliability will improve over time and perhaps speed too; but righ now I'd recommend sticking with 802.11g unless you absolutely have to upgrade to 802.11n.********************************

After countless hours of troubleshooting, I've finally narrowed down the problem. The unit is just not reliable with WMM turned on regardless of 20/40 mhz. With WMM turned off the unit is super reliable but only runs at 54mbps.
Stay away from this unit until more firmware updates are available resolving the WMM problem with Intel 5300 and Intel 4965 laptop nic cards. Don't know if this applies to other vendor nic cards.

Only a few months after owning it, the already LOUD internal fan started sounding like a jet engine. I contacted Linksys support and was sent a replacement through the RMA process. The unit I received worked for about a month or so now without a problem until now. It has started sounding like the other one. What piece of junk fans did they put in these things? I am getting rid of this and going with another brand. Now I am out $254, and I have to go spend money on a router.

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased the Linksys HPRO200 Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router and am very happy with its' performance. Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system. Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.

Cisco SA520W Security Appliance Review

(More customer reviews)Had these in two offices (West Coast/NYC) for a little over a week. The firmware is highly unstable, even after being upgraded to the latest version from Cisco. These were installed by a highly-rated Cisco partner firm for our offices, and after trying to get the most basic features to stick we've all simply given up. The VPN is extremely slow and volatile, settings do not stick in the firmware ("Hey, didn't I just make that a UDP port forward? Why does it default to TCP when the setting is applied and saved?"), DNS errors (that Cisco acknowledged and "fixed") caused unpredictable browsing and Web services for users, there's no command-line interface only GUI, and port forwarding simply does not (even when Cisco support tried to fix it). Terrible routers that it turns out are re-branded Linksys (remember, Cisco bought Linksys not too long ago). Save yourself a headache and start with a 5505 if you're looking at this price point.

It has never failed. It is also a great help for someone wanting to learn the Cisco IOS.
Only negative, you will need to update the IOS to the most current version to get the most out of it. But you should update the drivers on any computer equipment that you buy.

(More customer reviews)I have to say, I was a little concerned about this product after reading about some of the difficulties other buyers have experienced. I was also a bit nervous about installing it myself, since I am not what you would call a computer expert.
From Day One after installing it, though, I have been impressed. It gets fantastic range throughout my entire house, even through walls and heavy, metal objects. Signal strength on my computers is almost always between 90-100%, and has NEVER dipped below 73%.
As for the network installation itself, it was easy and took a total of about an hour (and that includes installation and configuration of wireless cards on 2 computers).
And you can't beat the price on this thing. I highly recommend this and other Netgear wireless network products.

You are able to stand it on it's side and and it takes up practically no space. You can't go wrong if you need this type of item.
I would also recommend, if you don't want to use or install the network card, the USB/ethernet adapter. It is another good ad-on.

TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N PoE Access Point TEW-638PAP (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)We bought 3 of these to use on the amenities floor of a hirise condo building in Chicago. We bought a PoE Switch and then had a Cat5 run to these locations. The access points provide plenty of coverage. While the other reviewer is correct that its not a gigabit port, so speeds are limited to 100mbps, its more than sufficient right now, and for the price, its not worth spending more on gigabit at this point. If we need to upgrade in the future, prices will drop by then for those.
Easy to set up and install. Again, these are getting heavy use by many users each day -- probably 100 users per day -- and we have run into no issues 4 months after installation.
WARNING: The AP's do not use 3 watts as stated on the specs. They clearly use about 14 watts each when using with a PoE switch.

(More customer reviews)Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it.
I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

D-Link Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point DAP-1522 - Wireless access point - external Review

(More customer reviews)I needed a wireless bridge so that I could move my printer to a room with no jacks. The D-Link DAP-1522 had great reviews, and a bridge should work with any environment. Not this one.
* The router's wireless settings can not be configured without Internet Explorer (a Linux user like me has to fire up a VM).
* The bridge would not relay DHCP responses from the wireless network to the attached wired devices. D-Link support says that is because I am using a Linux router (though it shouldn't make a difference). If I configured static IP addresses on my wired devices, they worked great.
* D-Link has not released new firmware in over a year, so I doubt that these problems will get fixed.
* D-Link support was "lacking" (and don't get me started on Office Depot's awful return policy).
* Custom firmwares like dd-wrt or tomato won't work on this device, so there is no easy way to correct these problems.
In short, I can get it to do what I want, but it's a lot of hassle.

Siemens SS2604 4-Port Ethernet DSL/Cable Router with Print Server Review

(More customer reviews)Worked fine for a couple years - a lot better than my previous (different brand) router - then a few days ago (May 2005), it just stopped working.
Now the Status and Print Err lights remain red (I never had a printer connected to it), and the Power and Print Act lights remain green, and any ports with computers connected just flash slowly. I tried holding in the reset button for a long time, and I even tried letting is sit completely unplugged for a few days, then resetting again, but it is still dead.
I have my router and cable modem connected to my UPS, and there were no power problems the day, so I don't think it was a power surge that caused it to die.
I see that one other person had this exact same problem. I would love to know what the problem is, so contact me if you have an idea (It's pretty simple to find my web site).
Fortunately, I already had another good router (3rd brand) to replace it with, so I'm still online. And I just bought an additional router (4th brand), at a very good sale price, to have as a backup.
