Cisco SR2016 16-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

I owned this switch for a little over a year. It slowly died taking my LAN with it (slowly). It took me a long time to figure it out since my LAN is fairly complex and contains several switches. However, I had 3ea of the Linksys SR20xx 8-port models die on me much faster. Fortunately, those were much easier to find since they just died completely when they went. So, I am not going to purchase any more of the Linksys SR20xx products. I hope that others are more fortunate, but I have had too many of them fail and am now trying D-Link switches. I used to really like Linksys and their hardware used to work forever (or so it seemed).

Cisco SPA941 4-line IP Phone with 1-port Ethernet Review

Cisco SPA941 4-line IP Phone with 1-port Ethernet
Average Reviews:

I put together two Asterisk servers for two businesses, and bought several of the SPA941 phones. I looked at Grandstream products, and read reviews, and bought one, but they are basically cheap crud in comparison. This SPA941 series is a solid business phone that works well... the cheaper competitors feel like cheap plastic (they are), and have all kinds of operational issues working with Asterisk. I'm basically a fan of this product.
On the down side, I have had trouble getting and installing the 2-to-4 line upgrade. Be aware that this is only a 2-line phone, even though it has 4-line buttons.

Cisco SD2008 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

Cisco SD2008 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch
Average Reviews:

Signifiant changes have occurred over the life of this switch. Version 1 had an internal fan and was quite noisy, albeit cool running. Version 2 & 2.1 eliminated the fan. However capacitor C251, sitting next to an internal heatsink is prone to failure after 6 - 8 months, resulting in dropped packets and link connections. Version 3.0 has solved this problem with a complete re-layout of the printed circuit board (PCB), with a redesign of the power/voltage regulation. The new version, still fanless, runs MUCH cooler than version 2.1.

NETGEAR ProSafe WNDAP330 - Wireless access point - 802.11b/g/n (draft) Review

NETGEAR ProSafe WNDAP330 - Wireless access point - 802.11b/g/n (draft)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been running Netgear ProSafe networking equipment for many years for my small office at home. Due to its typically high reliability, performance and value I always stick with the prosafe line (geared toward business or enterprise use) over the consumer grade networking gear which is often unreliable. This is the first 802.11n unit that I found which was designed for the enterprise. So I broke down and picked it up for about $300 with shipping. The most important thing to know about this unit is that despite their advertising this unit as a dual band with both 802.11n and 802.11abg radios; the radios cannot both be used at the same time. You can only turn on one or the other. This is a major limitation as far as I'm concerned. For those of us replacing old 802.11g equipment my preference would be for this unit to be able to support 802.11g legacy clients with one of the radios and also be able to support 802.11n 5ghz clients with the other 5ghz radio.
The range of the unit in 5ghz 40 mhz mode is quite short. Definately less than the WG102 802.11g unit that it was replacing. Since the range is so short I will have to get an additional unit and put it upstairs. Also, the firmware is a bit buggy and reliability doesn't seem as good as the mature wg102 unit. I'm certain that reliability will improve over time and perhaps speed too; but righ now I'd recommend sticking with 802.11g unless you absolutely have to upgrade to 802.11n.********************************
update
After countless hours of troubleshooting, I've finally narrowed down the problem. The unit is just not reliable with WMM turned on regardless of 20/40 mhz. With WMM turned off the unit is super reliable but only runs at 54mbps.
Stay away from this unit until more firmware updates are available resolving the WMM problem with Intel 5300 and Intel 4965 laptop nic cards. Don't know if this applies to other vendor nic cards.

The DWL-AB520 enables IT managers to plan for future network growth or to immediately expand their wireless network infrastructure when available wireless channels have already been tapped out. The additional high-bandwidth channels available with 802.11a also offer users on the network a robust way to transmit large data files much quicker than what was possible with 802.11b. Network administrators have the option of overlaying an 802.11a network on top of an existing 802.11b network, essentially creating another wireless network of 802.11a users who can communicate discreetly with one another. The DWL-AB520 is IEEE 802.11a- and 802.11b-compliant and interoperable with other 802.11a- and 802.11b-compliant devices.Unlike previous wireless PCI adapters, the DWL-AB520 features a high-gain external antenna that can be positioned in any number of configurations to achieve the best possible signal. When communicating in the 802.11a bandwidth, the D-Link DWL-AB520 also provides a level of security not previously achievable from other standard wireless solutions. The Atheros 802.11a chipset's utilization of the latest data encryption standard, AES along with 802.1x for user authentication provides a much more formidable barrier to hackers and sniffers, allowing users to share confidential or time-sensitive data with a much greater sense of security. The DWL-AB520 also provides the option to utilize 152-bit WEP with dynamic keying along with 802.1x user authentication to secure 802.11a transmissions. When used with D-Link's other 802.11a and multimode access points and routers, the DWL-AB520 offers a quick, out-of-box solution to instantly expand a company's network.

Average Reviews:

We recently built out our basement and before I spent the time and money to cat5 my whole house or possibly add a second cable modem, I decided to give the PLA-450 + 1 PLA-401 a try. To my amazement, I saw no degradation of speed when connected to the PLA-450 wirelessly at a reasonable range than I did when connected directly to my cable modem. This powerline duo smokes. My cable modem is on the second floor and my primary DLink wireless router is connected to it. Needless to say, getting great coverage from the second floor to my basement was not possible on the DLink. So the PLA-450 acts as my second wireless router (called an access point) allowing me to plug it into any wall outlet in the house. You do have to have at least 1 PLA-401 (connected to the primary router) and then your powerline link is complete. The PLA-450 is a good wireless device permeating interior walls with ease and maintaining reasonably strong reception with my laptop - even with a floor in between. Accessing the PLA-450 device via a browser is a little tricky the first time. You have to temporarily change you IP address on your network connection. I called support and they were easy to get ahold of and nice and friendly. The instructions do tell you what is needed so a call is probably not necessary for most users. I am thrilled that I can get near cat5 performance without having to hard-wire my house. A great product that suits my need perfectly.

I just wanted to extend my utter frustration with the RV0041 router. I spent more than $250 for this router, thinking it would be all I ever needed. Only a few months after owning it, the already LOUD internal fan started sounding like a jet engine. I contacted Linksys support and was sent a replacement through the RMA process. The unit I received worked for about a month or so now without a problem until now. It has started sounding like the other one. What piece of junk fans did they put in these things? I am getting rid of this and going with another brand. Now I am out $254, and I have to go spend money on a router.

Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch Review

Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Linksys SD205 switch rules. First, its mesmerizing because its the same size as the Ipod. Second, it does what its advertised such as connecting other computers together and most importantly, it regenerates signal. I was seriously considering buying a repeater, but they cost a couple hundred dollars. Technically, a hub is supposed to do the same thing but who wants that passive crap. The signal in my network started to attenuate and needed regeneration. This badboy fixed it and its back to full strength. I highly recommend this product if you are needing a component to branch out your network.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch

This newly-redesigned Linksys 5-Port 10/100 Switch can significantly increase your network traffics speed. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design -- tying your network equipment together. But unlike a simple-minded hub which divides the networks bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 5-Port 10/100 Switch can potentially increase your network speed by five times. It is the perfect way of integrating 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet devices, too. All five ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you dont have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates for best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200Mbps of bandwidth per port.

First off, i am a cisco guy, i work with their products on a daily basis. Although does box here is pretty good for the monies worth. You can down load the latest SDM (GUI Management Software) and have this up and running (and pretty secured) in a matter of minutes.
For first time users, my advise...Read the manual, try out the SDM and read line for line what the SDM tells/asks you. don't go clicking on next next next as if it's a microsoft application. Take your time and follow the SDM and you will get the results that you desire.

Cisco Aironet 350 Series 11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card Adapter ( AIR-PCM352 ) Review

Cisco Aironet 350 Series 11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card Adapter ( AIR-PCM352 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I manage the wlan at work and test numerous cards. The Cisco 350 series is what we rolled of company wide for for employee use. The Client software (ACU) included with the card is straight forward and provides great info on the current connection and link status.
One thing you can do with this card that you can't with others is modify the transmit power for the card. The primary difference between the Cisco 340 and 350 series is the transmit power. On the 350 you can change this from 1mw to 100mw (the 340 series peaks at 30mw). This feature is especially handy, especially when taking my laptop from work to home (you just don't need 100mw of transmit power in a 1200 ft. apartment).
The hardware is great (Cisco acquired Aironet around 97 I think), the software is intuitive, and is fully compatible with many authentication methods other than wep (i.e., TLS, MD5, EAP, LEAP).
So why did I give this card a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars? Three reasons:
Client side software does not roam between discontiguous networks when using advanced authentication
Client side software does not include any kind of sniff feature to see what wireless networks are within range. I have to use third party software for that.
Cisco cards do not do true rfmon passive packet acquisition. Cisco (and I think Lucent) diverged from the prism 2 chip , so i keep my Cisco card for work and keep a linksys wpc11 (prism2 chipset) for "network analysis".
Hope this helps. Peace to all wifi junkies out there.

I recently purchased the Linksys HPRO200 Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router and am very happy with its' performance. Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system. Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.
