I owned this switch for a little over a year. It slowly died taking my LAN with it (slowly). It took me a long time to figure it out since my LAN is fairly complex and contains several switches. However, I had 3ea of the Linksys SR20xx 8-port models die on me much faster. Fortunately, those were much easier to find since they just died completely when they went. So, I am not going to purchase any more of the Linksys SR20xx products. I hope that others are more fortunate, but I have had too many of them fail and am now trying D-Link switches. I used to really like Linksys and their hardware used to work forever (or so it seemed).

I had two of these fail in the last week. Both are about a year old. The first one has a couple of ports that stopped working, and the second completely died overnight. They're plugged into UPS's, so power surges didn't cause the problem. I'm really dissapointed!

This newly-redesigned Linksys 8-Port 10/100 Switch can significantly increase your network traffics speed. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design -- tying your network equipment together. But unlike a simple-minded hub which divides the networks bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 8-Port 10/100 Switch can potentially increase your network speed by eight times. It is the perfect way of integrating 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet devices, too. I picked up a DSS 16+ switch and it definitely improved our network of 14 computers. We were using the two uplinks. I purchased the system in January and it has a 3 year warranty.
Yesterday, it died completely. We lost all our ports. You cannot get through D-Link tech support by phone, and e-mail has been slow to get an RMA.
In retrospect, I think the slightly more expensive Link-Sys switches may be manufactured with better quality control.

I found this product while looking for a way to split the LAN at my job into two. We get one ethernet cord running to our desk and that's it. I was worried that my company would have some kind of block to not allow this to happen (they don't allow streaming video, audio, etc... so they block a lot of things). I found the unit on sell (about half price) and decided it was worth the price to try it. I tried it at home at first and it worked great (I have a router at home, so don't really need this at home, but just wanted to make sure it worked at home so if it didn't at the office, then I'd know it wasn't the device). I unplugged the ethernet from one computer, plugged this in and plugged in two computers. So, basically, there was one ethernet cord going from the router to the TRENDnet box and two computers branched off from there. Worked great - no set up needed, just plug-n-play. So, now for the big test: I took it to work. Worked with no big problems - same plug-n-play. The only thing is that when I plug my computer directly to the work LAN, it says the connection at 1 GBPS, but through this device, it shows up as 100 MBPS. I can't really tell any problems so far with speed - everything is working as normal, but now I have online access on both my work computer and my laptop. So, for me, this device works as advertised and meets my needs.
PS - sorry for my non-technical review, but I'm no tech expert!
PPS - don't forget you'll need an additional ethernet cord to make this connection. I didn't think of it at first, but luckily remembered before I finished my transaction and was able to pick up a cheap 3-footer.

Check out those dimensions! BIG!. It has a fan too and they haven't taken any lessons from Steve Jobs about making the fan quiet so it better be in an enclosed, insulated space if you are putting this in your home or small office.
Other than that it is great and a real performer (switches at wire speed)
p.s.
I wish I could change my vote to 2 stars.
Although they answered the support line quickly, I was told that the noise of this product is as designed and it really isn't intended for a small office, but rather should live in an already noisy data center where it can just add to the din. I am going to return mine and find another brand that actually wants it's equipment to be used in a small office. Sigh...

I got this switch on Amazon.com used for [...] bucks. Unfortunately I had to pay shipping which was not much. I still paid less than I would have at Best Buy. It works great. I have two computers running off of it and I have not noticed any change in internet speeds.

This Linksys SD205 switch rules. First, its mesmerizing because its the same size as the Ipod. Second, it does what its advertised such as connecting other computers together and most importantly, it regenerates signal. I was seriously considering buying a repeater, but they cost a couple hundred dollars. Technically, a hub is supposed to do the same thing but who wants that passive crap. The signal in my network started to attenuate and needed regeneration. This badboy fixed it and its back to full strength. I highly recommend this product if you are needing a component to branch out your network.

Real quickly, I'm a network administrator for one of the largest websites in the US, so I'm not clueless when it comes to these devices. Like all the positive reviewers here, I was very happy with this unit when I first bought it. Worked like a charm, fast, cheap - what more could I ask for? Well how about a unit that didn't go belly up due to Linksys cutting corners on parts?
Apparently some versions of the SD2008 and SD2005 had fans, but they have been cut out. Now these little buggers overheat, and when they do, it can cause capacitors to go bad which basically kill it's ability to operate in gigabit mode. In fact, several of my computers (and I've tried all sorts of NICs/computer combos) just repeatedly drop connection in a neverending loop. Nice work Linksys.
I've read on forums that many others have the exact same problem - usually takes months for it to show up. One guy actually tore his apart, and saw the blistered/bulging components that had overheated and replaced them (hope you're handy w/a soldering iron.)

My model is the DGS-2205 with the 5V power adapter. Like a previous reviewer, I noticed that I wasn't getting anywhere near gigabit speeds to my LaCie Ethernet Raid device. Well, that's because the LaCie Ethernet Raid Device is a slow pig.
After connecting my Mac Book Pro and my Mac Pro to the switch, I started offloading data to the Mac Pro.
Sustained throughput was 320 megabits per second with long bursts up to 720 megabits per second. At this point, the hard drive on the Macbook Pro was the bottleneck. Normally, I don't care for D-link products, but this little switch is quite the gem.
I've also noticed no noise from the unit, even when transferring large amounts of data at near wire speed.

Average Reviews:

I've applied the new flash upgrade, and performance is still quite good. Most of my comments from January still apply. Setup is quick, Citrix & terminal services work without modification, and I can connect to my main office via Cisco VPN client. Games are still working too.
As with most vendors, I suspect you'll have better compatibility if you use a Netgear WiFi NIC with this unit. I can get it to work with a Cisco Aironet NIC, but I cannot get WPA encryption to work. WEP (for what it's worth) works, but I'll probably have to spring for the corresponding Netgear NIC if I want to move to WPA.
The print server took a hit with the flash upgrade, however. Now it will only work as long as the PCs using it never reboot. If they do, you lose the connection to the print server until the firewall is rebooted. Tech support has been, um, less than helpful in resolving the issue. For that reason, my rating still stands at 4 stars. I strongly recommend you check the printer compatibility list on Netgear's site before you count on this as a print server.
A couple of other notes:
- The firewall is solid. I'm a networking guy, and I've tried to hack my way in a couple of times. Nothing's perfect, but this is a good solution in the home or very small business market. The worst I've been able to do against this unit is a denial of service, which disabled the Internet connection to my home network until I rebooted the unit.
- If you plan to use MSN Messenger 6.2 and/or Windows XP's Remote Assistance, you'll need to enable UPnP on this unit, which is a bit annoying, but more of a Microsoft issue.
- The e-mail logging is VASTLY improved over that of the previous flash. My logs are much more manageable, and the number of false-positive security alert messages is minimal.
- You can now create up to two remote access VPN tunnels with the new flash. I tried it and it works, although as a home user I can't imagine ever needing that feature. Difficult to set up, though, so unless you have a solid understanding of IPSEC VPN protocols, good luck.
Still, I believe this is a good unit for a home office. For me, combining the functions of print server, wireless access point, and hardware firewall into a single device make it worth the price.

The NETGEAR FWG114P ProSafe 802.11g Wireless VPN Firewall 4-Port 10/100 Switch with USB Server is a mouthful to say but provides your business with a router, switch, print server, wireless access point, and firewall. Instead of multiple devices and a tangle of wires, the FWG114P is all you need.
Wired and Wireless Connectivity The FWG114P can connect up to 253 users onto the LAN, including 64 wireless users, to share a single broadband connection. Built in to the router is a 4-port 10/100 switch for up to four connections, as well as an 802.11g wireless access point. The wireless network supports speeds up to 54 Mbps and there is a detachable 5 dBi antenna included.
A USB port allows you to connect a printer to the network that multiple users can share simultaneously. An RS-232 serial port provides a backup connection in case the main network connection fails. A row of LED lets you know the status of the network at a glance.
High-class Security For more security than just a simple NAT router, the FVG318 offers significantly more protection. It provides: a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall to prevent Denial of Service attacks, an Intrusion Detection System (IDS), the ability to block Java/URL/ActiveX based on extension, and FTP/SMTP/RPC program filtering.
The FWG114P supports two simultaneous VPN tunnels to protect links between remote locations, encrypting the data between them. The wireless network is protected by 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption as well as WPA.
Easy Setup Even with all the functionality the FWG114P provides, NETGEAR makes setup a breeze with the intuitive Smart Wizard that automatically detects the ISP connection and adjusts your configuration accordingly.

The unit is solidly built(steel enclosure), and works flawlessly like all my other Netgear switches. It's perfect for applications that need PoE to power Wireless access points, or for my purpose of powering and connecting a bunch of IP security cameras. A nice surprise was the price for this unit as it's much less than other PoE switches I looked into. In addition, having the two Gigabit connections were perfect for connecting it into my Gigabit backbone, and continuing the chain. I've yet to enable and configure CoS or other advanced features, but the UI seems straightforward. I'm not an IP expert, so this switch was a nice option rather than going to a managed switch. My only complaint with the unit is the fan is louder than I expected, noticeable loud in a room with a couple computers also running. All my other switches have been fanless, so I'm spoiled. In the end, I'd purchase another one. In fact I probably will real soon.

Netgear FS105NA Switch 5Port Metal Review

Netgear FS105NA Switch 5Port Metal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With switch prices coming down to about $10-per-port, it's hard to justify buying anything less than a 10/100-switch for all but the most cost-conscious buyer.
As most 5-port 10/100 switches have the same capabilities and cost about the same, there's not much to distinguish one from another. Still, I particularly like the Netgear FS-105 5-port switch. Like other products from Netgear, this switch is a little nicer than the competition because it has:
- Nice sturdy metal construction instead of plastic. The case also has a grounding tab in case you're using the switch in a (electrically) high-noise environment.
- Connection status indicators built into the jacks, so you can easily tell which cable is connected and is active. (The "vistajack" feature.)
- Right-angled barrel power connector which reduce the likelihood of disconnecting power accidentally.
- An easy-to-access switch to toggle port 1 between station mode and uplink mode. Unlike some hubs where two jacks are wired together, this design prevents accidentally shorting a station to an uplink.
- Screw-mount notches on the underside allows for easy attachment to the wall, underside of a counter, etc.
With a 1000-MAC address buffer and 200 Kbytes-per-port packet buffer, this switch can easily handle the typical traffic load of small- and medium-sized networks.
The Netgear product is not the cheapest 10/100-switch (check out the D-Link Fast Ethernet Switch, for example), but for overall design and value-for-money, I still like the Netgear the most.

D-Link DSS-5+ 5-Port 10/100 Switch, Desktop

I have been replacing my ethernet hubs with switches (because the throughput on a switch is much better than on a hub). After extensive review, I decided to get one D-Link 5-port switch and one Netgear 5-port switch, both auto-sensing for 10/100 rate. The truth is, they both work great! They both perform well, and were equally easy to hookup (no software to deal with). I will add one thing, and that is that the D-Link box was a much nicer design than the Netgear. First of all, it is much smaller (the picture of the D-Link here is deceiving). Secondly, the Netgear has the LED lights and the ethernet ports on the same side. For my setup, I prefer the ports on the back and the lights on the front. I think the Netgear switch was fashioned more for a rack. Style aside, a big thumbs up for both of these switches!

Cisco SR2016T 16-Port Rackmount 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

Cisco's marketing department royally screwed up naming this product. They chose a model number (SR2016T) that is one character away from another product (SR2016), which was so horribly panned by customers that it was pulled from the market. They should have just used the part number (SG 100-16) and left it at that. To be clear, this switch bears NO relation whatsoever to the Linksys SR2016 switch. The 24 port models are different as well.
My specific need was for a 16+ port gigabit switch that is quiet (silent if possible) and that will last a long time, running 24x7, completely neglected in a dusty closet. This unit is fanless, delivering on the quiet part, and also making it less likely to suffer from dust build up that can lead to overheating. I can't say yet how well it will hold up over the long term, but I'm not too worried since it comes with a lifetime warranty too.
So far I have had zero issues. Every device that was working on the original switch (an SMC8624 that is being re-tasked) immediately came up at 1Gb on the new switch. Recommended.
Note: the product literature is unclear and sometimes contradictory, but the 16 port model has an internal power supply (no wall wart) and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Going from a NetGear to this was like moving from Detroit to the Swiss Alps. Nice and small, yet great build quality. Internet performance is more solid than with other switches I've tried over the years. One huge plus is, it doesn't get hot like the others. Good job D-Link another top-notch product.

Share Max N300 Wireless N Rout Review

The Router Reviewed here has a PART number F7D7301 (Red Box) but in reality it is nothing but F7D3301 in disguise (Peeling off the F7D7301 Sticker will reveal that it is a Belkin F7D3301.
Why did I pick this? when there are so many frustrated users who has complained about this router!!!
The main reason is to use this router for a cheap NAS solution, The beauty of this device is that it can natively support NTFS (Read/Write) support using it's 2 USB slots! This opens up a whole world of possibilities, You can connect a USB hub and it can mount multiple HDDs connected (Up-to 2TB each) to the router and share those drives around the house wireless! at 802 11n! speeds!, you can attach a regular USB printer and make it a wireless printer and if you have media sharing devices that you can join the private N Wireless network so all other devices in the house can share media files the list goes on and on...
Agreed with others who commented here on Amazon on the intermittent issue one might encounter, But as I do not use it to connect to Internet, I did not experience any dropout issues. I just use this for Sharing files and media around in the house with a secured PRIVATE home wireless Network.
The Software CD that comes along with the device is useful for people who do not know anything about routers or networking and they have done an excellent job, But If you are networking Guru, you will discard the CD and start tinkering with the device and you can setup a very secure N wireless network in no time.
People complain about not being able to see their shares and need to use the BELKIN provided bloat-ware to map their shared drives? Why? it is so simple to map a network drive if you simply browse your network like for example \\192.168.2.1\ and you will see your shares!
The Belkin F7D7301 (Red Box) can also be DD-WRT'ed (Loading third party Firmware), I attempted that but did not find NTFS Read/Write auto-mount support so I flashed the Factory firmware back from CFE interface.
NAS solutions are not cheap to make, But when you find this router onsale at Big Box stores as well as Amazon it is well worth a try! as they do work!... you just have to have some patience and some Networking knowledge to achieve what you have in mind.
**** Update: FEB 28, 2011 ****
This router has an inherent software bug that causes frequent drop outs and hangs which was bugging me... and I am happy to report that I have finally managed to install DD-WRT open source firmware on this router and it now works like a champ with 100's of new features and is very stable for couple of weeks now!
It also supports 2x 2TB NTFS formatted drives with Read/Write via the NAS interface!! with DD-WRT open source FW very Cool!
Please see comments for details....
Good Luck!
