D-Link Skype USB Phone Adapter Review

D-Link Skype USB Phone Adapter

I just got this from BEST BUY and the price was same as Amazon ($60), for now. I went out looking for a USB Skype Phone and bumped into this one and bought it right away. I am very pleased with this product and my purchase and would highly recommend it and here is why.
I have both SkypeIn (allows you to have a phone no. of your choice for 30 Euros, approx US$ 38, per YEAR.) and SkypeOut (allows you to call any phone in the world much like a prepaid phone card) and I wanted to be able to use Skype away from my PC/Laptop so that I was not "tied" to one place in my apartment. So I started looking into USB Skype phones. A good one with a cord costs around $ 40 and a good cordless one costs $ 80 (I am referring to the one from Linksys and that one doesn't have the best reviews in the world so I was bit skeptical). Now for $ 60, this adapter plugs right into your USB port and allows you to use any good old phone (corded or cordless) with Skype. It doesn't need any separate power supply and is a nice little self contained unit.
Installation was a breeze and took less than 2 minutes and no computer reboot was necessary. I fired up Skype and plugged in a old corded phone and was good to go!! I made and received calls via Skype using my old phone and the voice quality was great. Next, I tried a cordless phone and it worked great too. So now I have a wireless Skype phone and I am very pleased with it. Not to mention I am putting my old discarded phones to good use now.
You can use the same phone for both Skype and your regular phone line if you want to but since I got rid of my landline phone long time back I couldn't try that feature. So I can't speak for that part. The manual does say that it's possible. Overall, I would highly recommend this if you are looking to go wireless with Skype using your good old cordless phones or just want to have the convenience of using a corded phone away from your PC. Believe me, even if you have WiFi in your place you would still want this. I have WiFi but I would rather use a cordless phone to talk on Skype out on my deck rather than lug a laptop and a headset out with me. I think most of you would agree with me on that one. Also, Skype website has similar adapters for a little less money ($ 10 less I think), so you can check those out as well if you like. I was familiar with the D-Link brand name from before compared to the brands on Skype so I went in for this one.

Having been dealing with a weak wireless connection throughout our home, especially when we stream HD movies through our 360 and while gaming.... I jumped when I saw that this product was available.
I handed the box to my hubby LOL and he slowly began connecting everything. First he plugged one near our router which is located in a closet and the other one by our XBOX 360. A minute later the eternet cables were connected and VIOLA!!! That is it. It couldn't have been any easier... a monkey could have done it (sorry to my hubby). Instantly there was a difference while he tested it with the gaming applications. IT handled it effortlessly. The connection wasn't dropped as it would have been atleast twice a night beforehand. Then came the streaming of the HD content ( I AM SAM)... once again... it was quick and there wasn't any buffering like we had before when there was a lot of action in the scene. It works and it is a wonderful solution for hard-core gamers that can't handle the response that they receive from a sometimes sketchy wireless connection. If you NEED to be wired in many applications... not only one; and don't want to run a million wires all over your home; then this would be a sound investment. IT is a touch pricey, so that is why I say it should only be for a hard-core gamer.
Also, most do rent and they do not have the luxury of having their wires running hidden throughout their walls; hence the ugly black cords spider-weaving in many renters apartments in NY. This would be the solution to end that.
The downside... it is clunky and it takes up outlet space. Another pet peeve... you have to have outlets near the product you want it to "wire".
Highly recommend... at a price drop.

I'va had two of these modems with a 3Mbits DSL line, they both had the same problem : They work fine for about 3 weeks, and then blam, they just limit my bandwidth to ~128k, I have to unplug it, wait a little and then replug it ... At the begining I had to do that every 2/3 days, but now it's about every hour !
If you have to buy a modem, buy alcatel modems !

I had a separate wireless router before purchasing this unit. It worked fine, but as most of my network is wired, my wireless laptop could not print to my networked printer. So, I bought this nifty little unit, plugged it in to my Qwest (Actiontec) M1000 modem, and was wireless in just a minute! Works beautifully, and my network functions as it should!
Can be configured for WPA / WPA 2 security (don't use WEP - it is totally broken & can be hacked in seconds!)

ActionTec plug Av
Very Easy to set up if you had all the instructions.
A quick review and as typical for me an update will follow. I had everything set up and truly believed the Quick Start Guide when it said no configuration required. Unfortunately.... I first disabled my wireless card in the Windows Control Panel just so I would not have any conflicts. Then I plugged in the two devices as described above. The LEDs on both boxes were green and red, sometimes green and yellow. The Guide said "Make sure both lights turn solid green". The guide warns you not to plug the devices into any outlet that is surge protected or filtered, which I did not. Oh well I said, I started moving both boxes into different outlets and could not get both "link" lights to turn green unless they were plugged into the same outlet. Rats I said. There is no explanation in the guide at all as to what to do when the lights are not both green. NO troubleshooting guide at all. I tried to hook up to the Web, but nothing happened.
Here I will save you the trouble of the hour long process that followed, and just tell how you can save yourself the trouble I had
1. It does not really matter what color the "link" light is. It is only the quality of connection indicator. Please go to the [...] website and download the user manual for the HPE400AVP. There is no manual and no CD with the box you buy and in my case it was the critical missing step. Here is the lights portion of the manual
Red means the condition is poor and less than 50Mpbs,
Orange indicates a fair line condition of 50-100Mbps,
Green means the line is in good condition with over 100Mbps throughput.
Of course since I was using wireless previously in a remote location with a 18 Mpbs transfer speed, even a Red light meant a vastly improved connection. The connection speed varies for me between yellow and red, and always is better than the wireless. My wireless was a Linksys WRT54G with the power setting at 75mw, the distance involved was about 50ft with 3 walls in between.
2. There are small black buttons on both boxes, but NO explanation in the User Guide as to what they do. You have to download the manual for that. They are the security enable keys, and you have to go thru a sequence of four timed presses to set it up. In my trials of various outlets in the house, I must have pressed one or both, but in a wrong sequence and must have messed up the communications, hence even with the connection established, I could not connect to the web. At the time I still thought that it was because I had red lights and they needed to be green. I had to reset both boxes using a pin.
3. At this point following the reset, even though the link light on both boxes was red, the Internet magically appeared. So the setup is truly plug and play, unless like me you believe the dreaded step #13 in the quick setup guide "Make sure both lights are green " or you accidentally press the security buttons.
Finally when set up, and even with my troubles it only took an hour. The connection speed to the web as judged by [...] was 50% faster than my best wireless connection and 3 times better than my worst connection. Great product, and only a one star downgrade for no packaged in manual or CD.
Lastly you may also try the following steps to improve your speed at lower costs.
1. Get an antenna with gain for the router and your wireless card (10-30$, 50% improvement)
2. Change the wireless channel in the router utility (G networks conflict with 2.4 ghz cordless phones)
3. Move the antenna even slightly for possible improvement, Use a utility like network stumbler to fine tune the position
4. If available for your wireless router, get an open source custom firmware for it which will allow you to fine tune the antenna transmit power (I use Tomato).
UPDATE
5. Get an inexpensive N standard router with multiple antennas (used to be called MIMO multiple in multiple out). I have picked up one recently and now all my remaining computers have a better signal as well. While you will not get speds higher than G standard of 54mb, you will get closer to nominal. You would ned a N adapter in the pc as well to get all the benefits.
Happy Powerline and Wireless networking.

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single Review

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this device to connection to my FIOS Actiontec router, and without a few comments from people here, you'd never get this to work properly.
First, the "quick instructions" (the only instructions as it turns out) assume that you are using a pair of these only to create an ethernet bridge over your coax. Thus, using this to connect to your FIOS router, the instructions are nonsensical.
Second, without instructions, you'll conclude you put this in between your coax cable and set top box. This will not work, even though this is apparently the way it's supposed to work. You'll get interference on your TV, things won't work, and you'll be ready to throw it in the box and return it.
In reality, you take the cable from the wall jack and get it into a coax splitter. One split goes to the set top box, the other to the device. You connect the ethernet jack to the device, and you're up and working.
If you go to Actiontec's site, they have no instructions how this will work with an Actiontec's FIOS router, despite the fact that this is probably the best use of the device!.
Anyway, once you get it hooked up, as other have said, you don't configure anything. It just works.
So it's a great product, hampered by no instructions for many people, and no help on the web site.

Actiontec Ethernet Over Coax MoCA Adapter - Twin Pack Review

Actiontec Ethernet Over Coax MoCA Adapter - Twin Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Environment:
I want to use my PS3 to access Netflix , HULU (via PlayOn) and the shows that are recorded in my PC (a combination of HD and SD). My PC is upstairs (where the cable modem is) and my TV is downstairs where i do not have any Ethernet port and rewiring is not an option in my home.
Various Methods Used for connectivity:
Tried Wireless G and N but was never able to stream anything from my PC. Then tried various power line products from Sling, Belkin (rated as 1000 MBPS) but was not satisfied. Belkin one worked quite well but was not consistent, something was interfering and impacting the performance as the output would vary wildly at different times. Then heard about MOCA technology and was initially skeptical but wanted to try it out.
Set up using Actiontec MOCA device:
Ordered these Actiontec ones as they are cheaper than Netgear ones. Received them and all the package had was the two units, two Ethernet cables, power cards and a sheet of paper with instructions. Just plugged them in with the following set up and within few min the set up was done and configured my PS3 to use wired connection.
Coax from wall --> Input of first unit ,Output of first unit --> Cable modem.(Office) and then plugged in the ethernet cable from my router to the ethernet port of first unit
Coax from wall --> Input of second unit,Output of second unit--> STB(Living Room)and then plugged in the ethernet cable from the second unit to the PS3.
Input is labeled as Coax and output is labeled as STB/TV on the two Actiontec units
So far did not see any degradation in the TV signal or the internet connection. One thing to note is, if you want to use this set up i,e use this as a pass trough for your Coax signal, you need a couple of Coax cables(F-pin) which are not included and might be better to order along with these units, if you want to do the set up right away.
Conclusion:
I did not measure the throughput and do not know if my home has any splitters or amplifiers but could see reliable connectivity and could stream HD video (only have 1080i) flawlessly,Netflix and HULU worked quite well and would recommend it to anyone who has Coax wires all around the house. I hope that the same performance continues in the future and do not have to update this review.

Actiontec MegaPlug 85 Mbps Ethernet Adapter Twin-Pack
Average Reviews:

This twin-pack works flawlessly when I have both units plugged into outlets that are on the same circuit. When I plug them into different outlets throughout the house, so that they have to "talk" across circuit breakers, their is still network connectivity, but my streaming video stutters during playback. I didn't actually measure the Mbps I was getting this way, so if it negotiated down to 10 Mbps across the circuit breakers, then this would work fine for internet surfing. However, for my streaming video, I need a lot more speed (like the advertised 85 Mbps). Again, once I plugged both units into outlets on the same circuit, my streaming video played back smoothly and flawlessly. I am quite happy with this product. [...]

I could not rewire my house. There was too much distance and too many obstructions for wireless - and I was concerned about security. I installed the Linksys phoneline router and USB phoneline adapters. Everthing installed easily. Works great. And has been working great for about a year. Slower than Ethernet (I can tell when I transfer files between PCs) - but faster than my DSL connection - which is all that matters. Anyone who wants a no new wires installation should consider this approach.

Actiontec GT701 High Speed DSL Modem Review

Actiontec GT701 High Speed DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I signed up for DSL, my vendor (AT&T) shipped me a free DSL modem. While the provided modem worked most of the time with a computer, it did not reliably run with a router attached. I reconfigured it for a bridged mode and that seemed to improve. However it was still slow, slow to connect as it did not seem to keep connected. The documentation was very dated, with nothing updated on the Internet. The support for that modem really didn't exist from the vendor either. However when I purchased the Actiontec modem after reading the reviews, I was hopeful that it would solve my DSL reliability concerns. When it arrived, I simply followed the instructions which really consisted of plugging it up and turning it on. It self sensed my AT&T vendor by configuring the DSL network settings and began to work. I did nothing. It just worked and is still working. Much faster than the old modem too. I have to say that this new modem looks a bit cheap and flimsy, but it is not and it works beautifully.

Actiontec MegaPlug A/V 200 Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit (White) Review

Actiontec MegaPlug A/V 200 Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Years ago, I purchased one of the first through-power-line Ethernet kits on the market. At the time, the claimed throughput was low (say, 10mbps), and the actual throughput was ridiculously slow. Not to mention the fact that the connection seemed to hang inexplicably with great frequency. In a word: Not ready for primetime, not ready for anything, really...
Fast forward nearly a decade. By now, wireless Ethernet routers are cheap and easy to use and just about everyone has one.
Into this environment, Actiontec has dumped their new MegaPlug "200 Mbps" powerline network kit.
Your first question, and it's a good one, is: "What's the point?" And for many people the answer will be "none, really, in your situation."
BUT there are two sets of people for whom something like this--if it works--is a godsend.
First off, there are those who simply cannot set up something like a wireless router. It's not hard, but there are still a lot of complete tech phobes out there. Think: your Grandparents, or maybe even your parents. Sure, you could go over and set things up for them. But then what happens the first time the router goes down and needs to be rebooted or whatever? Panic calls at midnight are not most people's idea of bonus time.
The second set of people who could use something like this, if it works, are those with wireless dead spots in their homes. There are a lot of people like this, actually. No matter where you set up the wireless transmitter, some places just get no signal, or a very lousy one. Now, you can--if you are technically inclined--set up a wireless repeater to address issue. But it's a bit tricky for most people who don't relish spending their Friday night shopping the halls of Frys, Microcenter or BestBuy. This kit offers a simple alternative to a wireless repeater.
OK, enough on who might want this. On to the more significant question: Does it actually work, and how easy is it, really, to set up.
I'll answer the second question first. It is ridiculously, stupidly, unbelievably easy to set this up. Plug one unit in one wall outlet. Run ethernet cable from unit to your router. Plug second unit into another wall outlet anywhere else in your house. Run either cable from unit to the device you want to talk to router. And you are done. Even if you have trouble figuring out how to open the door of a refrigerator, it can't take you more than 5 minutes to set up.
And how does it work? SHOCKINGLY well. In a three story home with about 20 separate circuits (lines on their own circuit breakers), I was unable to find two outlets that could not communicate with each other at a reasonable speed, and without any disruptions. You aren't going to see 200Mbps in the real world, but I saw between 24Mbps and 34Mbps, depending on where I placed the two outlet plugs. Before you sneer, this compares to a normal transfer rate of about 18Mbps for a GOOD wireless G connection. In other words, the Actiontec kit gave transfer rates that were between 33% and 90% FASTER than wireless G!
I can recommend this unconditionally to those who need an alternative to standard wireless with one caveat (and it's a big one): This kit is quite pricey. It runs over a hundred bucks at the time of this writing, as compared to a good quality wireless G router, which can be purchased for as little as $30. In addition, this kit is good for connecting only one location to another single location, whereas wireless is...everywhere.
But if you can get past the price, this kit is terrific.

Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities Review

Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities

I purchased this unit to replace a Motorola 2210 that after 13 months died of heat exhaustion. The 2210 ran HOT HOT HOT. I was told by an ATT Tech that the unit might last a year, and of course 13 months out, one month after the warranty expired the 2210 died. My replacement setup tied this Actiontec unit to a D-Link DIR 655 Extreme N Wireless Router. When I attempted an automatic setup, it turned out that both the Actiontec and the D-Link Wireless Router shared an IDENTICAL IP Network Address at 168.192.0.1. This is not a good thing. However after a quick call to Actiontec Customer Support on a Friday Night (I really do have a life:) along with a brief description of the conflict issue, I was able (using advance settings) to modify the Network IP Address on the Actiontec unit, resolve the conflict and get the unit up and running. This unit is virtually identical to the Motorola 2210 in terms of connections and for anyone replacing a burned out 2210 Motorola (piece of junk) this is the unit for you. The unit is about the same size and runs noticeably cooler than the 2210. From other reviews of this and a related Actiontec unit it appears and so far I can confirm that this Actiontec unit is very effective in holding and processing the DSL signal. The slightly more expensive Actiontec USB & Ethernet DSL Modem has an on off switch a USB port and can handle two computers on a wired network basis without an additional network adapter, but is also an older unit that must be upgraded to ADSL 2/2+, whereas this GT701D unit has ADSL 2/2+ protocol built in. This is a great unit for the money if you require a simple stand alone DSL modem.

Actiontec Wireless USB Network Adapter (Black)

I got this adapter for my older laptop that does not have a built in "N" card. It was easy to install with Vista OS, real plug and play. Once installed, it was able to see almost all networks in my area, and connected easily to my network. I moved my laptop around the house, out to the backyard, no problems. All in all, it is a nice addition to older machines.
Pros: Driver is already stored on the adapter and installs automatically when you plug it in.
Quick and easy installation, plug it in, and in a few munities you're done.
Received signal thru walls, and far from the modem.
Speed is about average both up and down stream.
Cons: Too large and unsuitable for laptops, will block the adjacent USB port unless you use the USB extension cable.
Will not work with Mac.
As other reviewers noted, the package is hard to open, environmentally unfriendly, and too large. I wish they packed it in a small box.

Didn't work, sent it back (thanks, Amazon).
I plugged it into an electrical outlet in the room next door, no connection (green "house" light not on). Tried in my office next to the router, still nothing, a flickering green house indicator. This is with the new DHP 1320 router, which works fine. I was on the support line for an hour, no luck (OK support). I plugged it directly into the router and could get to the IP address but no connection still. I gave up and returned it rather than spend my weekend fighting with a network.I'm waiting for more reviews to see if I was doing anything wrong. My guess would be that the DHP 1320 router is not broadcasting through the powerlines properly.

D-Link DSL-2540B ADSL2/2+ Modem with 4-Port Ethernet Router TR067/069 Review

I have been a long standing AT&T DSL subscriber in Texas. When my seemingly ancient 2Wire Homeportal 1000 finally gave way after ~7 years of use (aka, died), I called AT&T and assumed they would send a replacement DSL modem post haste. Au contraire. Said I was on my own, and was frankly pretty shocked as I am a big AT&T customer. I use an Apple Airport Extreme wireless network (5 wireless distribution nodes) and did not want/need to purchase the latest 2Wire WIFI device at over $200, but I also wanted more than one ethernet port on the device. BTW - I ran the HomePortal in Bridge Mode.
The D-Link DSL-2540B fit the bill but I was hesitant as I needed to configure the ne modem in Bridge or Bridging mode as I use PPPoE to connect to the net from my Airport Extreme base station. I found the following config info on the net (see below) while researching various solutions, and when my DSL-2540B today, I was up and running within 10 minutes.
Performance and connectivity have been great.
AT&T Bridge Mode Settings
Connect your computer directly to the D-Link. Use a cable, as Wi-Fi masochism is beyond the scope of this document. Browse to http://192.168.1.1/ in the browser of your choice. If your system has assigned itself a 169.mumble address, you will first need to manually assign your computer an IP address like 192.168.1.5, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 to do so.
You should be challenged for a username and password to proceed. By default these are both set to "admin" and you really ought to change this at some point.
You should be presented with a Home / Wizard screen. Un-check the box labeled "DSL Auto-connect." This will allow you to specify the VPI and VCI for your connection. For most ISPs in the AT&T ILEC footprint, this will be 0 and 35 respectively. Click Next.
You should be prompted to set the connection type. Select the radio button labeled "Bridging" and the pull-down menu option labeled "LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING." Click Next.
You will be presented with the Device Setup screen. The default settings will suffice for most home use. Click Next.
You will be presented with the wireless configuration screen. If you wish to disable wireless for some reason (and should have bought at 2320B instead), un-check the box labeled "Enable Wireless." Click Next.
You will be presented with a summary of your configuration. Read it carefully to ensure that it understood you correctly, then click the button labeled "Save / Reboot." The DSL-2640B will restart, after which you should have Internet connectivity.

Actiontec GT724WGR Universally Compatible 4-port ADSL Wireless Gateway (Gray) Review

Good thing for Rick V's review below. Otherwise I would have returned this great router.
If you are a Verizon DSL customer, it is possible that you can't connect immediately to the Verizon DSL service due to the WAN IP Lease expiration issue Rick described below. However, after disconnecting the old Westell modem and waiting for a few hours, the lease on the WAN IP had expired and the Verizon server had issued a new WAN IP to the new router. From that point on the auto-configuration worked like a charm. My advice:
1) don't call Verizon customer service - they are clueless about this issue
2) don't call Actiontec customer service - they told me that the router just does not work with Verizon
3) disconnect your old modem the night before your new Actiontec shows up. That way you are ready to go immediately.
Also, Rick V mentioned below that the router does not support WEP incryption, but only WAP incryption. That is actually not correct since the "Advanced Wireless Set-up Option" allows you to select what type of incryption you want.
Now that that's out of the way I can summarize as follows:
- Set up is really easy and fast (even for Verizon customers, if you follow my advice)
- Range is great. My router is located on the first floor and I still have 54 speed on the second floor in the opposite corner of the house
- documentation is good
- configuration is very intuitive
- just with any other g routers, you can get interference from 2.4 GHZ cordless phones. I would position router and receivers away from a phone basestation
- I was able to reclaim some space on my desk due to the integrated nature (modem and router) of this product
- the already great antenna can be replaced with one of your liking, if you feel inclined to do so (it is screwed on)
- the router is a little bigger than many other routers, but standing up it does not really matter
- it was easy to get to a life customer service person. However, they also did not know about the Verizon WAN IP lease issue
Hence, I can highly recommended this modem/router.
