Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem Review

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

I use RCN broadband and this modem is rock solid. It has never locked up on me, and does not require frequent reboots. About once a month or so I'll cycle the power on it just because my cable provider says to do so. But I have absolutely no complaints about the modem itself. I've had it for 2 years, and never had any troubles with it.
The highest speed I've gotten from my connection using this modem is 755kb/5500kb

Works fine - I'm running 150 feet of Cat6e and it connects. BUT it is not USB 2.0 As it happens, I'm OK since what I'm using it for, the devices on the far end are USB 1.1 but I purchased for future proofing, but this was advertised as USB 2.0 when it isn't. Pretty poor. As a USB 1.1 device for $35 delivered over 150 ft - no problems and a deal - I'd still have bought it - just a con to say USB 2.0

RCA Digital Cable Modem (DCM245R) Review

RCA Digital Cable Modem (DCM245R)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a couple years we had one of those rental units from the CATV Company. When we found out that under the rental agreement, if it broke they had the right to charge us way too much cash for replacement, it was time to get our own unit. In rental fees alone, the RCA paid for itself in less than a year. The cable company itself has gone away from the expensive units of the past, and uses a black, lay-down only version of the RCA modem.
The RCA model here can be used as an upright (which is the way we use it), or attach the rubber feet, and use it as a lay-down model. It features either USB connection, or the standard Ethernet. I have an older computer running Windows 98SE, and the generic Ethernet card did not seem to work. The USB option works well, and is a nice option. It also features a rear reset, and a front on-off button. One feature that's hard to appreciate if you didn't know about it is the placement of the cable connector. On the old rental unit it was high in the middle, and even with the large modem size it would sometimes tip the modem if the cable were disturbed. RCA places their connection right near the bottom when used in the upright position. This not only alleviates the problem with our old rental unit, but also helps prevent tipping of the much lighter RCA unit.
We have used the RCA unit now for several months, and find it performs as well or better, than the old expensive rental unit. If we could ask for anything more (hence the four stars), we'd like units to show a simple display of the current connection speed, and activity. We realize this is available in software, but its nice to see it before attempting a download connection, or accessing Internet monitors. Currently the RCA unit flashes in response to changing speeds, but we'd like to see a simple numerical indication. As more CATV high-speed connections are installed, overall speed will decline. In the future, we'd like to try and hit the best times for fast downloads. Even over a CATV modem, a recent download of OS updates for my fathers Mac, took a few hours to complete. Now that video, media, and other files are getting ever bigger; its nice to know what speeds can be obtained.

I used to have a cable modem that was provided by my cable company but I didn't want to pay the monthly lease fee anymore so I went out and bought this D-Link Cable Modem. I wasn't sure what all I had to do to get it to work, but when I asked a more computer knowledgable friend he said I just needed to plug it in and it will automatically configure itself.
So that's all I did. I called my cable company and told them I'd be switching modems, they wanted some long number off the back of the modem and said I was all set to go. So I plugged in the coax cable on the modem and plugged in the power. Within the next 10 seconds I was connected tot he Internet again.
Very easy.

Cisco-Linksys WGA54AG Game Adapter 802.11A/G 54 Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At $50, it's a steal for what this product does, right? Well, sort of... I purchased this device in order to allow my desktop machine to run Linux and connect wirelessly to my Netgear wireless router, thus bypassing all of the issues with wireless and Linux. I expected a nice setup process; connect the adapter to my NIC, configure some properties, and be off and running. I was wrong. Wrong in the form of a three hour session of head-versus-keyboard style troubleshooting. Hopefully this review will shed some light on this mysterious device.
Let's just get it out of the way that Linksys's customer support is nonexistant. Forget trying to call them. Also, the provided documentation is submoronic at best, and provides absolutely no information on troubleshooting. I had to figure everything out myself.
This thing is a nightmare to configure. I unpacked the unit, connected the power, and plugged into my NIC. Interestingly enough, my computer didn't automatically obtain an IP. After checking my TCP/IP settings, I reconnected and power cycled the thing a few times. Still no dice. As my frustration was building, it mysteriously connected! Awesome! I got no further than logging into the web interface, and it disconnected as mysteriously as it connected. I have no idea why it was designed like this, but it seems that you need to have a preexisting wireless connection for the thing to connect using DHCP!! The manual vaguely suggested plugging the thing into a router, so I tried that. Not only did I not connect, but my router wigged out several times, requiring me to restart it.
I finally figured out how to resolve all of these problems. It seems that since I have a netgear router, and the game adapter uses a static IP that is not in the router's DHCP range, this device behaves erratically when hard wired to the router. So...
1. Before doing anything, even before unpacking the adapter, log into your router and make sure your DHCP range is set to use IP's 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. Most default router setups (except for Linksys of course) use 192.168.0.x, and this will simply not work.
2. Pray, then plug the adapter into a free port on your router. Nothing horrible should happen yet, so open up a browser and http on over to 192.168.1.250. You should get a login screen, so go ahead and leave the user name blank, and "Admin" for the password.
3. The configuration interface is horrible. Straightforward, but horrible. The "Scan" feature only works half of the time, so you may have to refresh the page a few times before it works. Here, connect to your wireless network by SSID. It should say "Setting Successful," at which point you can unplug the adapter. It will very likely crash your router due to connecting thru wireless at the same time as wired. There are some other options to play around with, but whatever you do, DON'T ENABLE DHCP. Everything else should work as configured unless you have WEP, in which case you're on your own.
4. At this point, you should be able to plug the adapter into the intended computer, and it should work.
Since I got it working, it's been a great little adapter. It's very robust and does everything I need it to. Here are some thoughts on getting it working without having to violate your router:
Since the adapter requires there to be a wireless signal present in order to log in using a standalone computer, you may be able to connect directly to it with a crossover cable. When connecting with a crossover, you have to manually specify an IP. Anything in the 192.168.1.x range should work, subnet 255.255.255.0, no default gateway or DNS servers. Using this method, you should be able to access the web configurator to set the adapter up. I recommend that you change the IP to one in your router's default IP range. Also, you can play with WEP. Again, don't enable DHCP, or your day will get a lot worse. Trust me on this.

TERAYON TJ 700X TJ715X CABLE MODEM DOCSIS 2.0 Review

TERAYON TJ 700X TJ715X CABLE MODEM DOCSIS 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this modem because it identical to the Comcast provided rental unit I have been using continuously for six years without a single problem or dropped connection. They have now raised the modem rental to $7.00 per month so buying my own modem is long overdue. I purchased this on Amazon Marketplace at a good price.
The problem I have encountered is that after connecting the new modem, I called Comcast to register the MAC address, I was told that it was "already in one of their systems but not in their inventory and the systems don't talk to each other so it can not be registered." I have written them asking for a better explanation or resolution and so far have only received a canned answer which does not address the problem. Great modem based on my past experience and I'm happy with Comcast's product but Comcast's support computing systems seem to be very poorly done.

Cisco-Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First I need to thank all of you guys who gave the Linksys cable modem 4 and 5 stars. If it had not been for your reviews I would have sent this great modem back to Amazon.
I spent 6 hours trying to get this modem working, getting help from 4 different techs at AT&T. They told me that this modem was bad and that the cable light needed to stay on and that the Linksys modem would not register with their system. They told me I needed to send it back and get another one. {ALL FALSE} So finally I told them to connect my (their) old modem back up. Their modem worked fine.
As I was getting ready to pack my new Linksys modem up to send it back to Amazon. I decided to try it one more time. Following the exact sequence they used to connect their modem. And would you believe it? It works!!!
My problems:
1. bad tech support.
2. must remove router to register modem.
3. given wrong registration address. (MOST IMPORTANT)
4. computer must be turned off before you turn on modem.
Fool proof procedure to be up and running in 10 minutes:
1. Turn computer off.
2. If you have a router, take it out of the loop. connect directly from your computer to the modem thru the ethernet port.
3. Connect the cable.
4. turn on power to the Linksys modem, allow it to boot up.
5. turn on your computer
6. go to the registration page to register your modem. You MUST do this twice, for some reason it does not work the first time. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ADDRESS FROM AT&T. They failed to tell me I needed to use "https://" instead of "http://" it won't work without the "s"
enter your account # and registration #.
7. You should be working. Reconnect your router.

Netgear XE102GNA Wall-Plugged Enet Exte Review

Netgear XE102GNA Wall-Plugged Enet Exte
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm surprised at how well this product worked with my setup. I wanted my old iMac G3 running OSX downstairs to be able to access the wireless network, which was based upstairs. Upstairs, my other computer is a Windows XP PC, which is physically connected to a cable modem router that's physically connected to a wireless router.
For my situation, installing the Netgear Ethernet Extender Kit was fast and simple. First, I turned off the iMac downstairs. Then I went upstairs, plugged one unit into a wall outlet, then connected it to the cable router using the provided RJ45 cable (the package comes with 2 RJ45 cables, one for each unit). Then I went downstairs and plugged the other unit into a wall outlet, connecting that unit to the iMac with the other RJ45 cable. Then I turned the iMac on, and was able to surf the Internet immediately. The whole process took less than 5 minutes.
Important: the units WILL NOT WORK if you plug them into surge protectors or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). You have to plug them directly into the home's wall outlets. My home is about 15 years old and we don't have a lot of power surges, so I wasn't too worried about plugging directly into the wall outlet. I did try to plug one unit into a surge protector, and it didn't work that way.
Regarding connection speed, I ran a speed test on the iMac and the results say that I'm connected at optimum speed, as fast as my wireless network will allow.
I will probably buy another Netgear wireless extender and try it out on an old Windows PC, just to see if it works as well as it did on the iMac. But so far, I'm impressed and happy with its performance.

This was standard issue for the now defunct Excite@Home. I received this cable modem when I signed up for Excite@Home and still use it now that I'm on another cable service.
The small form-factor leaves a narrow, tiny footprint on a desk and the base is wide enough to make it stable and balanced.
The LEDs flash to show activity and a combination of different lights (read the manual) helps when trouble-shooting connectivity problems with your ISP. I've been using this for over a year and it functions great and hasn't let me down.

I was renting the Motorola SB3100 and replaced it with this model. Installation was as simple as calling the cable company with the new MAC address, plugging in the cables, and turning on the computer.
Now that I will not be paying a monthly modem rental, this modem will pay for itself in just a few months.
This modem also has a couple features that the SB3100 did not. It is upgradeable to DOCSIS 1.1 and it has a standby button that allows you to cut your computer from the internet without powering down.

The Motorola SB4200 SURFboard cable modem supplies both Ethernet and USB interface connectivity to ensure compatibility with almost any network-ready PC computer system. It requires only a standard HTML browser on your computer, making it virtually platform independent. With the SB4200, most PCs, Macs, and other computers can be easily connected to any network. The SB4200 supports the 64 and 256 QAM link technology that is the heart of the DOCSIS data network, providing up to 38 Mbps of raw data transfer rates in a single 6 MHz channel.
The SB4200 simplifies installation with USB connectivity, and provides enhanced security with its top-mounted standby button. The button disconnects the USB and Ethernet connection to the computer without disconnecting the cable modem from the RF network, providing security, flexibility, and performance. An easy-to-use standby button has been relocated to the top of the SB4200 for additional end-user security and convenience.

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single Review

Actiontec Ethernet over Coax MoCA Adapter - Single
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this device to connection to my FIOS Actiontec router, and without a few comments from people here, you'd never get this to work properly.
First, the "quick instructions" (the only instructions as it turns out) assume that you are using a pair of these only to create an ethernet bridge over your coax. Thus, using this to connect to your FIOS router, the instructions are nonsensical.
Second, without instructions, you'll conclude you put this in between your coax cable and set top box. This will not work, even though this is apparently the way it's supposed to work. You'll get interference on your TV, things won't work, and you'll be ready to throw it in the box and return it.
In reality, you take the cable from the wall jack and get it into a coax splitter. One split goes to the set top box, the other to the device. You connect the ethernet jack to the device, and you're up and working.
If you go to Actiontec's site, they have no instructions how this will work with an Actiontec's FIOS router, despite the fact that this is probably the best use of the device!.
Anyway, once you get it hooked up, as other have said, you don't configure anything. It just works.
So it's a great product, hampered by no instructions for many people, and no help on the web site.

Motorola Signal Booster 4-Port BDA-S4 Cable Modem TV HDTV Amplifier Review

Motorola Signal Booster 4-Port BDA-S4 Cable Modem TV HDTV Amplifier

This is the 4-port version of the Motorola Signal Booster, combining that product's high-quality 15 dB cable/antenna drop amplifier with an integrated 4-port splitter so you can use this device with up to four TVs (or a cable modem and three TVs) without having to buy a separate high-bandwidth signal splitter.
So who would benefit from a cable amplifier like this? Anyone who is having difficulty receiving a solid and reliable cable TV or cable modem signal is a candidate for the BDA-S4. But first check with your cable company to make sure they have done all they can to get a high quality cable feed into your home, with high quality cables, splitters and connectors. If they've "been there, done that," and you still notice frequent outages of your cable internet service, or pixilated (distorted) images on live or recorded TV shows from cable, then you may very well need a drop amp like this one.
This four-output amplifier is particularly helpful if you are splitting a cable signal coming into your house to multiple rooms for multiple TV feeds (and this is perfectly legal to do, per the Cable Act of 1992). Whenever you split a cable signal, you lose approximately 3 dB (decibels) of signal strength. Split a signal enough times and it can cause you to lose your cable modem feed or get sporadic distortion on your digital cable channels. Insert a cable amplifier like this into your cable feed as close as possible to where it enters the home and it will boost the signal enough to survive multiple splits and, in most cases, will allow you to enjoy a glitch-free cable TV signal throughout your home as well as a solid high-speed internet connection.
Why is this amp's "two-way" or "bi-directional" capability important? A two-way amp/splitter with "return" feed support is necessary in order to properly support a broadband cable modem (for data upload and download) and to enable interactive cable services such as PPV (pay per view) and interactive guides. A one-way amplifier will boost overall signal reception, but it will not work with a modem or interactive cable services. The BDA-S4 works perfectly with both.
The BDA-S4 won't work miracles. Again, always check your incoming signal, cable and connector quality first. But if you've done all that and are still having trouble, this little cable signal amp can be a real life-saver. It also works fine for OTA (over the air) HDTV signal amplification but only if you have a decent signal to begin with. A full review of the Motorola Signal Booster is available on Big Picture Big Sound's web site. Our writer's cable reception in Manhattan went from spotty to near perfect with this simple little amp. Highly recommended.

There is nothing worse than having a great TV to watch your favorite programs, while having a grainy or pixilated (digital cable) picture. Motorola BDA amplifiers give your TV signal a boost while maintaining full compatibility with all of your cable services. Simply install the BDA-S4 where your cable or antenna comes into your house and begin enjoying a better picture, faster downloads, and a more reliable HD or Digital TV signal. With a name like Motorola, how can you go wrong? The BDA-S4 is fully compatible with all cable TV standards, cable boxes, cable modems, routers, HDTV and more.

TRENDnet 1-Port Parallel Print Server TE100-P1P (Blue) Review

TRENDnet 1-Port Parallel Print Server TE100-P1P (Blue)
Average Reviews:

I converted my LaserJet 5MP (what a workhorse!) to wireless with this unit. It communicates well with the Ubuntu and Windows Vista laptops in the house. Wireless printing is much more convenient than print sharing since you don't have to turn on an extra machine to act as a server.
The documentation could be better and you need a Windows computer (or WINE) to get this running because the web interface doesn't work out of the box. But it's been running fine for weeks now that I've installed it.
I haven't had a problem with signal strength at all and my printer is upstairs while my computer is often downstairs.
I would recommend this adapter with the caveat that it's easy to set up if you know the basics of home networks. From the other reviews and comments, I'd say that if you don't know what an IP address is or how to install a networked printer on your OS, you might want to look elsewhere for something simpler to install.
