Iomega 2 TB MiniMax Hard Drive 34696 Review

Iomega 2 TB MiniMax Hard Drive 34696
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this HD for three reasons: 1 - to use as a Time Machine HD for the 4 Macs in the house, 2 - To use as a small USB HUB, and 3 to reduce clutter in my den.
I attached it to my Mac first, created several partitions, then attached it to my Airport Base Station Extreme (ABSE) wireless router. I then used the USB HUB to connect my printer to the ABSE.
Configuring the time machine backups was a problem - the latest firmware update to the ABSE caused it to disconnect the drive several times. I downgraded the firmware a notch and the drives would mount when time machine ran.
The only problem I had was heat - I stacked the ABSE on top of the HD and after a few days the ABSE was very warm - too warm for my taste. So I've put them side by side, but I really wanted to stack them. That is the only reason for the 4 stars.

I plugged the thing in and it worked, just like a hub should.
It has it's own power supply that you plug into the wall, so it won't use the USB power that comes from your USB port. This is a better design in some cases, because it means it will charge your ipod when the computer is off, making it suitable for use even with laptops. However, if you are planning on turning your USB devices off (this is usually only a problem with wireless devices, like wireless keyboards) when you turn your computer off, you'll have to also unplug the power cable to shut down everything plugged into this unit. You can unplug the power cable from the wall (obviously) or from the back of the unit.
The two stand up USB ports are mighty handy for hand held devices. The other 5 plugs go straight into the back. The unit is actually matte black, not grey, like the photo represents.
The instructions state that it is not compatible with adaptec USB controllers. From Windows, click start-control panel [Then on the left hand side, click ] switch to classic view (if it says "switch to category view", you are already in classic view, so continue) then click System-Hardware-Device Manager-USB controllers, to see if "Adaptec" pops up on your screen. If not, you'll probably have the same positive experience I did. If Adaptec pops up, this may not be the device for you.

NZXT IU01 Internal USB Expansion (Black) Review

NZXT IU01 Internal USB Expansion (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The NZXT IU01 is the perfect solution for the longstanding problem of not having enough USB HEADERS on your motherboard.
There seems to be some confusion so I will explain. This device adds three USB headers to your motherboard. A USB header is normally located on your motherboard and serves to connect two USB PORTS. What ends up happening many times is that a computer will have four external USB ports on the front of their case and only two USB motherboard headers. Both headers will be taken up on the motherboard (2 USB ports per header), thus preventing anything else from being connected such as a fan controller or an internal media card reader. This bad boy, the NZXT IUO1, comes to the rescue and pops out three more headers inside of your computer case. Note that this card also comes with two USB ports on it to connect a standard USB device such as a flash dongle, wireless dongle, bluetooth dongle, or a myriad of other dongles. These extra two ports on the NZXT IU01 are presumably to be used for something that you want to leave permanently inside of your case, or at least for an extended period of time. Once you close the case up you will not have easy access to any of these ports until you reopen the case.
Note that you will have to open your case to install this sucker. As always follow the usual safety protocol when doing so. Disconnect the power!!! Discharge any static electricity! Wear a static bracelet if you are not too seasoned at keeping static away from delicate electronic parts. Consult your manual beforehand!
Also note, that while it says that it adds three USB headers to your motherboard, one will have to be utilized in connecting the NZXT IU01 to your motherboard so in total you will add a net of 2 USB headers and two internal ports.
Installation was relatively easy. It comes with a double sided tape to adhere itself to a convenient spot of your choosing inside of the case. It also comes with the appropriate cabling that looks to be pretty good quality. The only point of criticism would be the small font with which the instructions are printed. While I was able to read them, people with difficulty seeing small things up close will probably benefit from a magnifying glass.

The IU01 addresses an issue common to most gaming PCs that is a lack of substantial power and expandability from the front-panel USBs. The IU01 enhances control and boosts power for front-panel USB devices by connecting them directly to the power supply as opposed to the motherboard, ensuring that there is always enough power to control your accessories and peripherals. The IU01 also adds six internal USB ports that are great for powering items that you don't need constant access too like a Bluetooth module or USB wireless router allowing you to free up the external ports for additional accessories.

I have this hub plugged into a Gigabyte x58 MB with 2 USB3 ports, the device worked ok the first boot but never again. I attached a usb3 Buffalo 1T drive to it.
The drive showed up ok the first time but after a reboot it would not show up, I had to unplug it and plug it in for Windows to see it. Half of the time I'd plug the drive in it would use USB 2 and not 3.0. So I got another 4 port usb 3 only hub and it's works great. I do have the latest MB bios and the latest USB 3 drivers.
Would I buy this again? NO
Would I recommend this? NO

Arkview Network Device USB 2.0 Share Hub Review

Arkview Network Device USB 2.0 Share Hub
Average Reviews:

Just got the Arkview USB server share device for the primary function of sharing a printer on my home network. The good news is that setup could not have been easier and it works like a champ for printer sharing (and this evenis an old parallel port job that I use with a parallel to USB cable). So far so good. Also tried to share a couple of USB flash drives...works like a champ again. The only problem I have is it apparently is not compatible with my Memorex DVD drive. It finds it and connects fine but when you try to view it on any PC it simply shows one file, which it thinks is some kind of Audio cd analog file and no matter what CD or DVD you put in it simply shows that same one file. So a mixed bag. Otherwise if you stick to the drives on the compatibility list I am sure you will be fine. Good solid product, easy setup and easy connection software. That's about all.

I was looking for a USB network server so I could use any of my 3 printers with any of the 4 systems on my network. Installation was simple and the server works perfectly. I wish it wouldn't automatically disconnect the chosen printer so fast (3 minutes) but it does work like it states it would and I would recommend it to anyone looking to solve the same problem I had and especially when using Windows 7. I tried another unit that was 3 times as expensive but it wouldn't work with Windows 7.

Medialink - 4-Port Powered USB 2.0 Hub with External Power Supply Review

Medialink - 4-Port Powered USB 2.0 Hub with External Power Supply
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I ran out of USB ports on my new Mac and was tired of switching cables. I also had trouble recognizing some of my SDHC 8 gig cards with the extension I was using so I wouldn't have to keep turning the computer around. I plugged the unit into a USB port and hooked up the power unit to a power strip. Everything worked that I plugged in including the Lightscribe DVD recorder, something I have had trouble hooking up with a hub before. One day I forgot to turn on the power strip I use for the unit and it still worked. I now use Velcro to attach it to the desk so it stays put and I plug my cards into it without a problem. I like the one on top, it makes it easy to attach the cards. Also the hub has a red light which is lit when the unit is on. My new Mac goes to sleep when left alone for a short time and has no indicator to let you know it is asleep. As long as the power strip is off the red light is only on when the computer is on. Since I don't have to keep the power strip on the red light is my indicator for the status of the computer, nice. If you have had problems with hubs before get this one, it works great.

Belkin F5L009 5-Port Network USB Hub Review

Average Reviews:

The posts that are complaining about sharing devices, connection issues, etc. need to understand that the problem is with the USB protocol and not the device. USB devices are not designed, or even able, to run on multiple devices at once. Have you ever plugged an external drive into two computer at the same time? Why would this be any different? If you need to access a hard drive from multiple computers at the same time, get a NAS drive. The device also is not designed to power external drives, like the usb powered western digital drives noted in a review. I actually have gotten one to work with no problem, but after talking to a few Belkin guys they don't really know what will or won't work with the device. Any drive that has its own power supply should work with no problems.
Also, you can share between computer easily. If you have to do something with a different computer, you can either request the devices (sort of like IMing) or just click on the disconnect button. Simple, like ejecting a device.
If you understand what this, its awesome and works like a charm. I've gotten all sorts of cool stuff, from midi devices, DVD Burners, Printers, Scanners, cameras, etc. to work with it. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 star is because I accidently plugged in the wrong power cable (12v not the 5v) and blew out the power supply. It should have a buffer, but Belkin replaced it for the cost of shipping, so I can't be to upset about. I actually found myself missing it within a few days of messing with wires!
Also, MAC drivers ( doesn't work with Leopard yet) are available here:
http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5L009&aid=8547&scid=0
Works great on my Powerbook G4!

And what's more, you and your kids each need access to a printer. With the Belkin Network USB Hub, you can give each computer on your network direct wireless access to up to 15 devices, including an external hard drive to store your family's digital media and a printer that everyone on your network can share. Share up toFifteen Devices Wirelessly The Belkin Network USB Hub allows you to give every computer connected to your network access to up to 15 USB devices. (The Hub itself will connect directly to five devices, but it also lets you "daisy chain" three additional USB hubs to it, so that you can connect a total of 15 USB devices to your network computers.) Belkin F5U301 CableFree 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub with Dongle Review

Belkin F5U301 CableFree 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub with Dongle
Average Reviews:

A wireless USB hub is very appealing. The implementation of this one makes it useless.
The software only runs on Windows XP. There are no Vista drivers. The hub does not work until you've logged in and even then, it takes a few seconds. Since you have to have log in before the hub will work, your mouse and keyboard can't be plugged in to the wireless hub. This also means that USB audio devices that must be plugged in at boot will not work. I don't understand why Windows requires USB audio devices to be plugged in at boot, but that's Microsoft's fault, not Belkins.
It gets better. Yesterday, we rebooted the machine and my brother logged in with his account. The wireless hub didn't work at all because the software wasn't installed for him. Why would the installer even bother installing this software for only one user? No problem, we installed the software on his account. Reboot. Everything seemed to work. Fast user switch to my account and the software freaks out because the software running on his account is using the device. The USB devices attached to that hub go offline.
To Summarize:
- No Vista support
- Can't use it for keyboard/mouse
- No support for multiple user accounts
- Fast user switching messes it up
However tempted you may be, don't buy this product until they address these issues. This product is not ready for prime time. On the plus side, it seems like all of these problems are just related to software. If Belkin decides to, they could probably fix all of these problems in software.

Medialink - 7-Port High Speed USB 2.0 Powered Hub - NEW Desktop Design w/Weighted Base Review

Medialink - 7-Port High Speed USB 2.0 Powered Hub - NEW Desktop Design w/Weighted Base
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this USB Hub as a gift, and found it to be a very nice product. Very useful and flexible.
My Windows Vista computer had 4 USB ports in the back, and two in the front (6 total). Plugged into my computer's USB ports all the time are 5 devices: speakers (separate power), flatbed scanner (separate power), inkjet printer (separate power), GPS training watch (USB power) and wireless hub for mouse/keyboard (USB power). My 6th and final USB port I've been using for a film/slide scanner, which causes problems when I need to also recharge my iPod Touch, because I don't have any more ports left. So, when I received this USB Hub, I was excited to give it a try.
It says that it can be used without power, which is nice. To put that claim to the test, I plugged in all six devices (speakers, flatbed, printer, watch, wireless mouse, and film scanner) into it. Everything worked fine, including the two devices that ran on USB power. Needless to say, I was pleased.
As a final test, I plugged in a Toshiba external hard drive. I figured it would not work because it requires a powered USB port, but had to try it anyway. As expected, it did not work. However, as soon as I added the included AC adapter to the USB Hub, the external drive came to life. I had all seven ports on this hub in use, and it worked great.
In the end, I ended up leaving in the speakers, flatbed, printer and film scanner (all the separately powered devices) and not using the AC adapter on the USB Hub. This allowed me to free up those two USB ports on the front of my computer.
A few final comments...
There are no written instructions included other than what is on the back of the box. That should not be a problem as you simply plug it into your computer. Although, some folks might think they need the AC adapter when they do not in all cases.
The blue LEDs on the device are NOT annoying like a lot of lights being used today. You can set this on your desktop and it won't bug you when the room lights are out.
The USB ports are nicely spaced, making it easy to plug things into the USB Hub.
The USB cable for the Hub is 5 feet long. The cable for the AC power supply is 6 feet. This should give you flexibility on where you place the hub. (One side comment: I wish AC power suppliers would label what they are for. Or, at least provide some white space to write on it using a Sharpie. It would make it easier when trying to figure out what adapter goes with a device.)
Of the various USB Hubs I've used over the years, this is my favorite so far.
