(More customer reviews)The instructions don't mention Windows XP. The web site mentions it, barely, but wihhout instructions. I wasted an hour trying to do it myself, then an hour with tech support. Finally got it working, but only because I know about IP addresses, network configuration, etc. I imagine it would be easy to setup if they bothered to provide instructions for WIndows XP, and it may be easy with older versions of Windows. But XP users should stay away. And wonder why NetGear can't provide any attempt at instructions a year after XP's release.
Once I got it working, it works fine. The only hassle was setting it up.

D-Link DP-300U 10/100TX 1-USB Port 2-Parallel Port Print Server Review

(More customer reviews)First I tried the NetGear PS101 print server. I liked the spiffy form factor. I could talk to the print server admin web interface and get it to print a test page, but even after many, many hours could never get it to print a document. So I returned it.
After that debacle, I decided to splurge for the HP JetDirect. At first I could only get it to print the configuration page. A visit to the HP support forums turned up lots of references to the JetDirect not working with SP2 and the suggested solution was to uninstall SP2. Ugh. Finally I went to the D-Link web site and copied the D-Link installation guide for XP w/SP2. The main difference was that D-Link suggested installing the print server as a local TCP/IP printer instead of a networked printer and, bingo, I got the JetDirect to print. (NOTE: It still goes over the network, it just looks local to the PC.) However I was miffed that I paid double the price for a device which required a competitors documentation to get to work. In addition, DHCP didn't work and I could never get it to show up in my network neighborhood.
So ... in a possibly nonsensical move of principle and price, I bought the D-Link DP300U and set up it. It's not trivial to install, but after working with the other two devices, a couple hours of install time seems like nothing. Here are a couple tips ...
(1) Do NOT use DHCP. Use a fixed IP address. Unlike the JetDirect, DHCP works. However, it still didn't show up in my network neighborhood and now I didn't know the IP address. There is NO HARDWARE RESET on the device. The D-Link support guy was great. He told me that if I couldn't find the IP address, I would have to send it back to D-Link to be reset (Ugh!). The good news is that he told me how to find it. I went to the router and looked at the DHCP assignment list and got it, and then reset the thing to a nice, fixed IP address in my subnet.
(2) I first set it up as per the instructions as a local TCP/IP printer, which means it's still on the network but looks like a local printer to the PC. It worked OK, but did this weird, long pause ... about a minute ... right in the middle of long documents. Again D-Link support was good. They told me to try setting it up as a networked printer, which I did. Unfortunately, this doesn't have spooling and you're back to 1980's wait-for-printing. Then something weird happened that I can not explain ... after setting up the device as a networked printer, I went back to the local TCP/IP printer that I had set up and it worked perfectly. Don't know how it got fixed.
My PC is a Dell laptop w/ wireless connection to an access point, and then wired to a router and the print server. My printer is an HP Deskjet 5550.
So, in the end I'm sticking with the D-Link product and I am happy with it. I would have rated it 3 stars as an overall product, but bumped my rating to 4 stars because I still thought it was the best of the ones I had tried. The itty-bitty-print-server market could use some improvement.

Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server Review

(More customer reviews)The tech support was prompt and knowledgeable. The unit has good range which seems to be limitied more by the class of the PDA that is trying to acess it.
HOWEVER this product has a VERY serious design deficiency that makes it UNSUITABLE FOR USE at any price!!!! Belkin tech support has confirmed that there is no way to reset the unit to the original factory settings if you can not acess it via the built in web manager. Belkin tech support also confirmed that there is also a flaw in the unit that will cause some user passwords to not be accepted. Once this happens, this will essentially require returning the unit for complete replacement. I know of no other networking product that has such a serious design flaw (all other networking devices I am aware of have at least a reset button somewhere or a "power on" sequence to handle these inevitable situations). It also makes the unit unusable for any scenario where if you make a change to the settings, you can not afford to be without it for the time to swap it out.
An obvious problem for you, me and Amazon here!

Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch Review

(More customer reviews)Like a number of the other reviews mentioned, the PSUS4 works fine as a printserver but the included setup software isn't worth even removing from the box. I am by no means a networking expert but I had the time to tinker with the device and found that you really need to be ready to configure the PSUS4 directly using your browser and then configure each computer for local printing by creating a new TCP/IP port using the IP address of the unit and configuring it for printing to "USB1". If this sounds complicated it really isn't and with a bit of searching you can find quick and easy instructions from an article on the Linksys website (note the lack of mentioning USB1 in the article).
Long story short, don't buy this if you want plug and play but if you have a basic understanding of networking you will find this works fine after a bit of a painful initial setup. I found that it took much longer just to find the information I needed than actually setting up the unit.

I bought the refurbished version of this router. As far as I can tell, it's exactly the same except that it has the most current firmware pre-installed.
I used the Linksys CD to install it, and following the Step 1 instructions I managed to configure the Print Server very easily.
However, when I then proceeded to the next stage (Configuring your computer to see the wireless router via your wireless home network), the CD just pooped out, saying it wouldn't work with my operating system. No 'sorry', no help, just a dead end.
Fortunately, I found a website where it gives you the instructions, and within five minutes it was working perfectly. I'm going to try to include a link, but in case it doesn't work, type into google ehow WPSM54G and hopefully the first link will be How to set up a Linksys WPSM54G or PSUS4 print server under Windows XP, Vista, Vista 64, Windows 7, or Linux. I specifically bought the device because it would work with a Mac and I've met all of their minimum requirements.
So I hook up the thing, and their software doesn't find the drive as it's supposed to. I think, oh that'll be okay, I'll just configure the IP in the device and it'll be good from here on out.
Nope, It *must* run through the detect phase of the program every time. After a lot of trial and error, I got the thing to detect, but not reliably. This means backups don't happen as scheduled. Pretty much making the product worthless to me.
I spoke with their tech. support, when I told them I was using with a mac they actually said "you're killing me"
I recommend against this product if you have a mac.

(More customer reviews)My network is two wireless XP laptops and a Linksys 802.11b router so I was a little worried about mixing networking brands - but it worked out fine. Virtually no slowdown compared to having the printer directly connected to the laptop and I print some pretty big files. Setup wasn't too bad (~15-20 min staring at the manual really confused, 5 min reading amazon.com reviews, ~20-30 min installation). Much like what Hafizullah said, it's better to config in steps: configure the printer in the wired configuration and then get it to work wirelessly. Since the manual is mostly useless, here's what I did:
1. Wire it up (connect the print server to the router with an ethernet cable and the printer to the print server by USB).
2. Turn on printer, power on the print server (after startup sequence of ~20 sec, ethernet light should be lit).
3. At this point open up a browser and go to "192.168.0.10" and the print server config utility should start.
4. Click on the "configuration" tab and set: password, connection mode (mine is infrastructure), ESS-ID (your network's name), wireless channel, WEP (# bits and password). It's important to type the WEP key in exactly with no spaces or dashes because the utility won't give any error message if the password is wrong. Click 'save'.
5. Click on the "Network" tab and change the IP address if you want. It has to be within the range of assignable IP addresses for your wireless network (e.g. my router assigns from 192.169.1.1 to 192.169.1.101, so I set the print server to 192.169.1.2). Make sure to set "manually assign" otherwise you won't know what address your printer is on! I think the workgroup has to be set, but I'm not sure (I set it to the name of the wireless network).. Click 'save'.
6. At this point you should be able to print a test page. Click on the "tools" tab and click to print a test page. If it prints, you're in business.
7. Now you can set up the printer drivers. The instructions are actually pretty good for this, so use them here. Once that's done, try printing something that isn't a test page to make sure the printer itself is set up OK.
8. Now to configure the wireless portion. Unplug the ethernet cable, and click the reset button (recessed in the back of the print server). Once it finishes booting, the "wireless" light should be on or blinking. If so then you should be done. Try printing something.. I didn't have everything correctly set up initially, so this step took a few minutes. I think everything necessary to set was covered in #4.

D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server Review

(More customer reviews)Works fine. set up three of them on my network. 3 XP Pro computes computers and one running Win 98SE. Need to change the defauld IP addresss on each additional DP-301P+ after you use the default ip address for the first one (using the web browser to access the units ). For win 98 you have to go read the manual on the CD (a .PDF file) for installing on win 98, and ME ect..and run the included software to install the print client for the network. On win XP all you have to do is set the IP address, look at the port name in the configuration screen, and then use the win XP "install printer wizard" using the ip addrss and port name per the instructions.. I.E. the guy below who could not install it using ME apparantly did not read the Manusl on the CD for specific instructions for installing on a Win 98, or ME computer ..nor did he run the software needed to make it work on Win 98 or ME.

(More customer reviews)I picked this unit up not more than 4 days ago, and I'm not thrilled. NOT a plug-n-play device. Installation is fairly straight forward: ethernet connection to a wireless router, usb connections to your printers. You install the software on your PC, and it loads an application that scans for the Hub and any devices connected to it. You see what devices are available, and you have to select each one to make it "active" on that PC. If I only had one PC, this product would probably work fairly well -- but I have a laptop and a Mac. (I'll concede that there is no stated support for Mac, BUT if you have software like Bonjor installed, you do see the hub and devices and I have printed to my printer using this device.) That said, I have YET to get my laptop running XP to successfully use this hub. An OEM error message comes up at the last "selection" step, that gives me a list of three trouble-shooting steps (like "unplug and re-plug the devices") that *never* work. And lastly, when I do get either the desktop PC or Mac to print to the hub, the other machine looses its connection to the hub entirely -- prompting me to shut down the machine that held the "current" good connection, so as to free up the hub for the other computer. I'm hoping there is going to be some good support on the OEM web site for this device -- anyone owning this is going to need it.

The good news is that setup could not have been easier and it works like a champ for printer sharing (and this evenis an old parallel port job that I use with a parallel to USB cable). So far so good. Also tried to share a couple of USB flash drives...works like a champ again. The only problem I have is it apparently is not compatible with my Memorex DVD drive. It finds it and connects fine but when you try to view it on any PC it simply shows one file, which it thinks is some kind of Audio cd analog file and no matter what CD or DVD you put in it simply shows that same one file. So a mixed bag. Otherwise if you stick to the drives on the compatibility list I am sure you will be fine. Good solid product, easy setup and easy connection software. That's about all.

It comes with everything you need to set up the server (cable, directions, driver/software CD) . The "HP Wireless printing Upgrade kit" is really for those you do not have a wireless network and only one computer. The Upgrade Kit requires the computer on which it is installed to be on to use the printer on any other computer. The HP Wireless G Print Server will allow you to print from any computer on your network, not requiring any particular computer to be on.
If you have more than one computer but don't have a wireless network, the best setup is to get a wireless router and set up the wireless network (it is easy nowadays.) This way you can print from any computer using the HP Wireless G Print Server without turning on a "host" computer.
I have been using the HP Wireless G Print Server for a month now and it works faultlessly. I did have an issue with my HP D5460 printer sending back the ink levels. I uninstalled the print server and then reinstalled it and it works fine now. The directions were unclear on the order of installation of a printer and the print server. Here is the best way to install:
First install the printer on each computer.
Disconnect the printer from all computers.
Install the print server on each computer, following the installation instructions for connecting the printer to the server.

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a USB network server so I could use any of my 3 printers with any of the 4 systems on my network. Installation was simple and the server works perfectly. I wish it wouldn't automatically disconnect the chosen printer so fast (3 minutes) but it does work like it states it would and I would recommend it to anyone looking to solve the same problem I had and especially when using Windows 7. I tried another unit that was 3 times as expensive but it wouldn't work with Windows 7.
