Determine Netgear XE103 throughput in real life situation.
Comparison with 802.11B wireless throughput in the same test situation.
Test Setup:
Two Windows XP SP2 endpoints with intervening switch.
XE103 Route - Computer1:Switch:XE103:Power Wiring:XE103:Computer2
802.11B Route - Computer1:Switch:802.11B AP:Air:802.11B PCMCIA:Computer2
Test based upon transfer of folder from Computer1 to Computer2.
Size of transfer = 376 MB (395,129,843 bytes).
No other devices on network, except those described.
No other activity on test computers, other than transfer monitoring.
Test results will be time of transfer.
Transfer monitored by network bandwidth monitoring software.
Netgear Encyption Utility, supplied with XE103, displays connection rates.
The XE103 devices are using maximum encryption supported, 56-bit.
The 802.11B devices are using maimum encryption supported, 128-bit.
All values recorded for comparison and analysis.
Notes:
The XE103 devices are affected by household wiring.
Quoted 85Mbps rate will only be found where devices in very close proximity.
Computer2 is located close to AP for 802.11B maximum rate and signal
reliability.
Computer2 is not located in same room as Computer1, power line routing
unknown, but not a great physical distance.
The XE103 provides extra security and network partitioning by using a
network identifier. All devices that will communicate together are
configured by the user to use the same network identifier.
Special Notes:
When comparing bps and Bps, there are some general rules of thumb.
In wired LAN environments, rule of thumb is 10 bits per byte, resulting in a 10:1 ratio between bps (bits-per-second) and Bps (bytes-per-second).
In wireless LAN environments, rule of thumb is 20 bits per byte (extra framing overhead, encryption), resulting in a 20:1 ratio.
Though not exact, you may find these values useful in comparing products.
In both wired and wireless cases, manufacturers quote highest rate possible at the lowest communications level.Test Results:

The XE103 performed 2.65 faster over the 802.11B in a timed comparison.Product Opinion:
I have noticed that the Netgear Utility shows flunctuating rate values during different time periods. The lowest rate has been 18 Mbps, highest 45 Mbps.
The XE103 is at a premium price when compared with other powerline models.
If similar test data can be found, it may be more cost effective to use a less expensive model (manufacturer quoted as 14 Mbps).
If Internet surfing is main desire for the remote computer, then comparison of ISP provider rate to these tests results should be done.
For highest security and speed, nothing will surpass a wired network.
Powerline and wireless are a great convenience.
Judge which is best by comparing your needs and desires for speed and
security.

(More customer reviews)Works fine. set up three of them on my network. 3 XP Pro computes computers and one running Win 98SE. Need to change the defauld IP addresss on each additional DP-301P+ after you use the default ip address for the first one (using the web browser to access the units ). For win 98 you have to go read the manual on the CD (a .PDF file) for installing on win 98, and ME ect..and run the included software to install the print client for the network. On win XP all you have to do is set the IP address, look at the port name in the configuration screen, and then use the win XP "install printer wizard" using the ip addrss and port name per the instructions.. I.E. the guy below who could not install it using ME apparantly did not read the Manusl on the CD for specific instructions for installing on a Win 98, or ME computer ..nor did he run the software needed to make it work on Win 98 or ME.

(More customer reviews)Although, this is a great deal: easy to setup, easy to install, easy to reset, etc., it does contain many problems.
One problem is that it heats up to quickly, mainly because its through USB, and USB travels really quick, especially if you are running a USB 2.0 port instead of 1.1 port.
Another main problem is that it doesn't function well unless you have a netgear router. I got a new router when I renewed my Verizon contract, and decided to get this so I could network my two comptuers without having to open it up. Often times it says that network is unavailable, even though the adapter is receiving fine. When I bought a Netgear router, it worked flawlessly, but if you don't have a netgear router, its a hassle.
The size is overall good, and you can either plug it in directly to the USB, or have a cord so that you can wrap it around or hang it on the side of your computer. Netgear has great customer support, even though their lines are often full the wait time is long, they are always there.
I've only had one for 2 months, but so far, it really hasn't given me any problems. Just make sure when your not using it, to unplug it, or it will heat up and wear quicker.

(More customer reviews)When I first bought my TiVo (about a year ago), I totally hated that fact that I had this forty foot phone cord running from my bedroom to the next room where I had to split the phone connection. After about a month of that madness, TiVo announced the launch of their new Series 2 network dial-in. So I bought this piece of equipment (the only USB to wireless internet I could find at Best Buy) and my TiVo recognized it immediately.
There has never been an issue with the device and I'm always getting at least a 60% signal, which registers as "Very Good" on my Tivo. Since TiVo announced that the Home Media Option was becoming standard on all boxes, I have never had a problem listening to music or viewing photos. I loved the setup so much that I bought a new TiVo for my sister last month and insisted that she buy the Dlink product. She has had no issue and her connection is nearly always at 90% or higher.
I couldn't see me having a TiVo until without this technology and just keep having tremendous success and no service interruptions with it. I am extremely pleased.

NETGEAR Powerline AV+ 200 Adapter Kit XAVB2501 Review

(More customer reviews)When I saw this item, I leapt at the opportunity to get my hands on a set of these, in hopes that this Netgear Powerline AV+ 200 Adapter Kit would give me a stronger Internet connection than I was getting wirelessly to my Wii. I've only just recently begun subscribing to Netflix, and the signal that I've been getting wirelessly has left something to be desired with regards to image quality of downloaded media from the Instant queue.
When I received my package, I couldn't wait to get these in place and put them to use. Luckily for me, setting these up was a breeze. The adapters themselves are pretty tall, and fairly wide, as you probably determined by the photo - about 2.5" wide, 5" tall, and about 1.75" deep. They fit VERY snugly into the outlets (I placed each of mine in the bottom outlet, so I could still access the top outlet), so be prepared to apply a little force to the adapters if you're trying to get them into outlets that are in an awkward spot to get to.
The instructions also clearly state that these adapters need to be placed in the wall outlets themselves, NOT into a power strip that items are then connected to. Looking at them, it's pretty obvious to me that the recommendations are wisely made. I simply wouldn't want to fry these adapters out if I put them into an outlet that didn't look adequate for them. So, I unplugged the power strip that I'd had plugged into each outlet that the adapters were going to be occupying, connected one of the enclosed Ethernet cables to each adapter, popped the adapters into the outlets, looked for the LED indicators that showed that these were working well where I'd put them, plugged the power strips into each adapter's built-in outlet (ingenious!), and I was in business! It was then as simple as connecting the Ethernet cable from the adapter near my computer to a port on my wireless router, and then connecting the Ethernet cable from the adapter near my entertainment center to my Wii and its LAN USB adapter, to create the network connection.
When I first got my Wii and was considering my Wii-Internet connectivity options, I'd thought about buying a ridiculously long Ethernet cable to wind around my apartment and its walls, and the challenge it would be to staple/nail around the cord to keep it in place. I could've done that, but I knew how unsightly it would be, so I opted to go for the wireless router that I now have (and still use and enjoy), and connected my Wii to the 'net that way. It was more than adequate, too, until I started my Netflix subscription, and could literally see that my wireless signal was lacking, for Netflix-viewing purposes. Thanks to this adapter kit and a Wii-compatible LAN adapter, though, I've now got the best picture that I've seen on the Netflix Instant queue accessed through my Wii, and a super-strong connection to the Internet with it. Long story short, I couldn't be more pleased by just how well these adapters do what they say they will. I remember originally thinking, "there's no way that these things can make an Internet connection without them being directly connected to each other with a cable." Netgear, you've proven me wrong, and I'm thrilled that you did! Two thumbs up!
* UPDATE*
It's knocking on a year after my install of these NETGEAR Powerline AV+200 adapters, and I'm still happily using them. Perhaps even better, I'm still LOVING them! They continue to provide a strong and consistent signal to my Wii, which I still use daily to watch TV/movies on via Netflix.
If you happen to be having any viewing quality issues, be sure that you've got fast enough Internet service. The NETGEAR adapters will transmit everything they possibly can, as reliably as they can, but if your Internet is just not fast enough, your viewing quality might be a bit on the grainy/pixellated side. I had been using such low-grade Internet when I initially installed these that it wasn't even listed in my cable provider's options - I had to specifically request it in a sales call with them - but I've since bumped my service up to one of the top two options, and that totally fixed the issues that I had with viewing quality.
These NETGEAR adapters were great last May when I first got them, and, eight months later, they're still keeping my entertainment center up-to-date with the latest technology, and doing so beautifully! Good stuff!

Plugged in the card, ran the installation software, and was up and running in about five minutes on my XP laptop. Around the house, I am able to get good signal strength
a few rooms away from the router. While out and about, I am able to achieve good connections from some distance. Haven't had any problems connecting to open networks, or on a secure network when using a password. This was not my experience with other devices.
Don't think you can go wrong with this device.

Monster PowerNet 200 Powerline Network Adapter Starter Kit Review

(More customer reviews)With my new Samsung Blueray, not only can I pop in a Blueray disk but my model has Netflix, Pandora, You Tube, and Blockbuster download and play capability via wireless connection. Problem was my router is upstairs on one end of the house and the Blueray is downstairs on the other end of the house, some 60+ feet distance; and not even a linksys WRT610N would send enough signal to get better than a 10% success rate on the download. Most of the time, it just chugged and chugged and then timed out. Solution: Monster Powernet 200 which sends the signal through your electrical wiring. It takes 2 units of equipment to get started - thus it's called a starter kit. You just plug one into a wall outlet at your PC and connect an ethernet cable from the Powernet to the router. Plug the other Powernet unit into a wall outlet at your Blueray and connect an ethernet cable from it to your Blueray player. Then go into setting on your Blueray and change the connection type from wireless to cable. Now the movies download in about 10 seconds. Another plus is now that the first 2 units are installed, I can add additional units in another room of the house where I have an ethernet ready TV. My only word of caution is that the Powernet unit plugs into both sockets of a typical wall outlet, then compensates by having an outlet on both sides of the unit; but not all plugs may fit into it because of angled plug shapes.

(More customer reviews)I agree with several other reviews here that the card is bad. But, if you had bought it and don't want to spend money returnig it, some tweaking would make it work good! A good product should be real plug and play but this is not!!
I bought it as a router and pc card (both D-link 802.11g) set to use at home. I have my desktop connected by cable to the router and my laptop connecting wirelessly. Installation was a snap for both the router and the card and they worked fine and I was able to browse and share files between both the computers - all at good speed.
Trouble started when I went to work with my laptop or when I used laptop on its battery. The card took a long time to recognize the network and the computer kept saying 'cound not connect to network drives'.
The other problem was that my battery drained very fast. So fast to the extent that some times just booting up and reading my emails will already have used up 75% battery!!
Minor trouble; the D-link utility does the exact samething that Windows XP wireless connection manager does. However, there is no (easy) way to disable the utility from loading. Even if you use windows XP to configure wireless connections, the D-link utility sits there and does nothing.
Solutions:
1. You can prevent the D-link utility from loading and this improves performance - makes connections quicker actually. Click Start..Run.. ; Type 'msconfig' and click OK. In the window that appears click the 'Startup' tab; You will see a long list of programs that are enabled at start up. Uncheck 'airplus.exe' and 'reg.exe' both of which run from the D-link installation directory.
2. To conserve battery, Right click the wireless connection icon on the tray; click status... click Properties... Click 'configure' right next to the D-link airplus g card's name. Go to the advanced tab and choose 'powersavemode' from the list..choose property 'normal' or 'maximum' to save your battery.
These two actions make a card actually work better than using D-link's utility (Do all tweaking at your own risk! It worked for me, but, cannot guarantee it'll work for you w/o causing any trouble). Good luck!!

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter Review

We purchased this unit to try out on vacation at a beach house rental where typically we have to connect to neighborhood hot spots. At best we usually have to manipulate our laptop to just the right position to find a sporadic at best connection (you know-- we're ultimately standing on our head, wearing a foil helmet, and holding the laptop on edge etc-- that kind of thing).
I'll have to report back to you from the beach house next week but right now I just pulled it out of the box in our urban neighborhood setting at home. We typically have an abundance of signals here but only 1 or 2 have been connectable using my Netgear Rangemax 240 (which does better than my other standard b/g wireless adapter cards).
The Hi-Gain picks up a ton of signals in each direction I point it and is able to connect to nearly anything with a signal strength of 20% or better.
The Quick Start guide warns you all over the place to be gentle when moving the antenna on its axis or swivel, so comments from others on fragility seem to be correct. It looks like for travel purposes you'll need to keep it packaged in its box (6"x8"x4")
But I'd have to say-- so far so good. I have no immediate criticism or disappointment, other than the Wireless LAN Utility has a somewhat undersized window showing available network info--but this is a small issue.
I'll report back from the beach house next week to share what our final verdict is.
Oh the USB cord is no more than 6 feet long so you will need an extension or a longer USB cord (I ordered a 10' extension for $8). By the way, if you intend to replace the USB cord rather than use an extension, it uses a mini-USB connector (the type you see on cameras and camcorders-- your standard connector as you see on printer will not work.

AUGUST 4TH BEACH HOUSE UPDATE
As promised, here is a bit more after a week of trying it out. The good news is it does consistently work. The ability to move the dish around to locate the best signal is a big plus when you are in some remote area. I am currently connected solidly to a site about 1/2 mile away across a Bay (I have a clear line of sight) with 2 of 5 signal strength bars illuminated.
We just repeated a download speed test and confirmed the wireless connection at 4861kbs down and about 420kbs up.
To be honest though, I'd say the HWU8DD appears only slightly more sensitive than my current pcmcia adapter, a Netgear Rangemax 240 (WPNT511). Again the advantage here is the ability to move the dish to the best reception spot rather than manipulate the computer itself.
Again, the short length of the USB cord (about 5') means in most cases you really need an extension, but with the 10' USB passive extension we also purchased from Amazon, I'm able to sit where I want to and let the antenna do its work. The bad news is I have a cord draped across the floor which may drive my wife a bit nuts at times.
We also discovered this is not compatible with my wife or daughter's Mac (also not compatible with Linux.) I just checked the Hawking website that tells me only Windows Vista 32, XP, 2000, Me, and 98Se are supported with drivers.
Finally, I also have to agree with those who note both size and fragility again. For traveling "road warriors", this is a relatively bulky, and somewhat cheaply made little plastic unit to be taking along on your flights or packed in a car somewhere unless you are desperate. I can see it being totally destroyed in my luggage at the airport, so we won't be taking it along flying to Chicago next week. (Isn't it possible to create a flatter, more compact and durable unit these days?)
Who is this perfect for?
I'd say the RV'er is going to love it. It's great even here at the beach house where we're not worrying about little people playing with or tripping over the cord. At home, I'd hate to be carrying this little thing everywhere my laptop goes, though with a stationary computer, it may be a good solution.
If you've tried everything else, I'd definitely give this a test-drive, but keep in mind the need for a good return policy if you don't like it or if it doesn't work for you.
I'm giving it 4 stars because it does work as promised.

Sept 19, 2007 Update: STOPPED WORKING
As mentioned in my review, the dish is somewhat fragile. Yesterday we noticed it quit functioning. Perhaps the box was jostled a bit too much, or the dish popped off its stand once too often (the dish connector pops out of its base sometimes leaving the connecting wire exposed or potentially vulnerable to breaking its solders).
I looked on the Hawking website and am going to try to return it to the manufacturer if I can. I am past the 30 day Amazon return period.
No bitterness, but just a little bit of frustration. Drop my rating to 2 stars.

(More customer reviews)I just received my USB100TX and connected it directly to my TiVo Series 2 with the supplied USB A-B cable. It does *not* come with a CAT-5 UTP Cable, but I have plenty spare and hooked it up. As soon as it was wired to both the TiVo and a hub in my nearby wiring closet the link light was activated. I did not need any of the manuals or driver disks that came in the package.
Within minutes I'd configured my TiVo to recognize the network adapter and my Linksys BEFSR41 Firewall/Router had allocated it a DHCP address.
I immediately ran the test-connection and also forced a daily update.
Downloading schedules are super quick compared to the dialup option. Obviously new firmware updates will also be significantly quicker. Plus the phone line won't be tied up during the call.
I had previously tried a different USB/Ethernet adapter and my TiVo did not recognize it (D-Link USB-650) so beware of using that on a TiVo.
The Linksys USB100TX is the wired adaptor recommended by TiVo and it works perfectly, first time.

(More customer reviews)My first impression is "this is such a cheapo lookin' card, but for the price, I guess I can give it a try"... Boy, was I wrong or what? The installation is so easy, it took 2 minutes and 40 seconds, including opening and closing the computer cover, and software driver. The card's performance is second to none, far exceeds my Linksys and Netgear, even Intel cards. Ever since, I've buying this particular card for my home and professional networking use, and it never failed me.
I know some people gets uncomfortable when they see a "ancient floppy disk" for storing driver. But darn it, it works great. And what's amazing about D-Link, is that they always seem to include the latest driver in their packaging. I have bought over 60 of these cards, and the driver date is just barely 2 - 3 months old on every purchase. Consider Linksys, their drivers are at least 1 year old. To top it off, Windows 2000 and ME has build-in drivers for this card, and the floppy isn't even needed.
Overall, this is a good performing card at a wonderful price. They use the SAME chipset (stamped with their own name) that other competitors use as well, but they did it much less expensive... Definitely +++!

Zonet ZEW2500P - network adapter ( ZEW2500P ) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a good product but the software is a bit long in the tooth. If you plan to use software supplied by Zonet (Monitor) it will stop working if you allow windows to hardware update the driver (rt2500usb.sys). The newer driver version Microsoft has at the update center will not work with the Monitor software supplied on the Zonet CD. Also the software supplied by Zonet does not support WPA secuirty while the Windows WiFi networking software does.. My advice is to ignore the CD, plug the unit in and let Windows find the driver at the Windows update site. This means you will need an internet connection while you are installing the adpter. If you do not have the ability to be connected to the interent while installing this device just use the installation CD and go over to the Windows software after after install if you are going to be using WPA. The only other glitch is I found the Zonet software (Monitor) defaults to 11 Meg, so you have to change to the auto setting to get 802.11g speeds.
The device itself seems very stable and has good sensitivity.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter WMP300N Review

(More customer reviews)This draft N PCI adapter works great paired with the Linksys WRT300N draft Wireless-N router. I have three computers in my home all using WMP300N cards along with my WRT300N router. I also have a Vonage phone adapter hooked into my router (via Ethernet cable). No complaints at all. This product is speedy and appears to be low latency as well. It can easily handle the 4 Megabits/second download rate from my cable internet without any glitches or slowing down. If only more websites transmitted that fast!
There is one caveat, however, I recommend that you do not install the Linksys software that comes on the CD. I found that it utilized quite a bit of CPU bandwidth just keeping the connection current. However, if you let Windows install the DRIVERS ONLY by searching the CD-ROM for the correct drivers, then it works perfectly and doesn't burn up any extra CPU cycles. With the Linksys driver software installed, I was seeing upwards of 30-50% CPU utilization even when not surfing the web. With the drivers installed via Windows XP hardware installation wizard, CPU utilization went down to practically zero whether surfing the web or not. Great product, especially for the price!
Addendum regarding drivers - February 24, 2007 - The newest drivers do not cause the CPU utilization problems. I still don't think they are necessary, but at least they don't cause high CPU utilization problem.
