(More customer reviews)Everything you read about the features and setup of the LinkSys by Cisco NMH410 MediaHub is true: it is very easy to set up and to configure other computers and it does offer a browser-based way to access your media.
The problem is that most of it doesn't work. The lion's share of the software is broken, buggy, or simply incapable of doing what it is supposed to be doing. A quick glance at the support forums will confirm this, and unfortunately it appears to be endemic for many of the models of MediaHub, not just the NMH410. The problems that you will encounter are:
1) The Media Hub Online tool will not "see" all of your files. They will be physically visible when you use a computer to browse folders, but they will not properly share or index, even if they meet the stringent requirements (no long names, no special characters in the names, must be in one of the supported file formats, etc.).
2) The Hub will continually rebuild its index of your files. In other words, "now you see some files, now you don't". It regularly "forgets" what's on the hub and starts over, one by one, re-reading every file. You have no control over when it does this.
3) The Media Hub will not respond when it is busy. I can play an album that I manually launched from the folder, but if I try to open the File Browser, look at Configuration, or even just click a bit too fast browsing the media, the MediaHub Online will throw me "MediaHub is Disconnected or not Responding" errors and stop taking any commands. I have to randomly try again and hope to get lucky and get in.
4) The website for Remote Sharing (in other words, logging in to your device through the Internet from another location) regularly has Server Timeouts. You never know when it will let you in or when you will just get a dead white page.
5) Some features reboot the hub without warning. You choose the option, it says, "Resetting the MediaHub" and the next thing you know, the browser interface fails, the hub loses all of its indexes, and it starts all over again crawling through your files and not responding to your clicks.
It's very distressing to see aggressive releases of software and firmware updates, whose release notes claim to have solved these problems...only to find that all the "fixed in this version" problems are still there. If these issues really were considered fixed by the company, then Linksys/Cisco's problems are much larger--they may need to consider a recall. Thus far, the only features that truly work are the ability to view files and folders on a computer and the optional computer backup program (which should only be used for files and not as a full system backup).
It should tell you a lot that there are actually two pieces of software embedded in this hub: the Linksys by Cisco software, and a third party tool called "Twonky Media Server". Twonky is better, but still not what this product promises above. Both have really bizarre problems that should never have made it to the sales floor.
I'm reaching the point of complete surrender. I managed to get indirectly engaged with the hardware/software development team and have offered them access to my hub to try whatever it takes to solve the problem.
As of October 19, 2009, my unit was used for the Beta and the new Firmware was released. If you own an NMH and are having the above problems, you should give it a try. Unfortunately for me, the best I have seen with this new firmware is that the fixes are spotty: almost seems to mostly-work one day, then it's back to completely acting up the next. The cruel part is that one day I'll discover an amazing new feature or two that I'd never seen before...and the next day it's gone again. Content appears and disappears, and the system is always rebuilding itself. I have spent many, many hours on and off support calls struggling with this device and I'm sorry I bought it. It's November 19th, 2009, and my NMH410 Media Hub is now back in the original packaging waiting to go out the door back to LinkSys. I've lost over 4 months trying to get this to work and I can't recommend it to anyone.

This hub has solid metal construction, sockets in the front, and lots of flickering lights that show the tranfer speed, and show who is connecting at either 10 or 100 Mbs. We use it to share one (adelphia 2-way cable) internet connection among 6 PCs, along with files and printing. No problems so far.
This hub handles the standard hub task with ease, and with a utilitarian aesthetic quality that you won't see in 3com's white plastic. 3Coms tries to disguise their hub as an external modem- why?
(p.s. I'm confused as to why 3Com's 8-port 10/100 hub costs over twice as much)

It has it's own power supply that you plug into the wall, so it won't use the USB power that comes from your USB port. This is a better design in some cases, because it means it will charge your ipod when the computer is off, making it suitable for use even with laptops. However, if you are planning on turning your USB devices off (this is usually only a problem with wireless devices, like wireless keyboards) when you turn your computer off, you'll have to also unplug the power cable to shut down everything plugged into this unit. You can unplug the power cable from the wall (obviously) or from the back of the unit.
The two stand up USB ports are mighty handy for hand held devices. The other 5 plugs go straight into the back. The unit is actually matte black, not grey, like the photo represents.
The instructions state that it is not compatible with adaptec USB controllers. From Windows, click start-control panel [Then on the left hand side, click ] switch to classic view (if it says "switch to category view", you are already in classic view, so continue) then click System-Hardware-Device Manager-USB controllers, to see if "Adaptec" pops up on your screen. If not, you'll probably have the same positive experience I did. If Adaptec pops up, this may not be the device for you.

(More customer reviews)Look -- I don't need a great hub. Obviously, this is definitely NOT something you'd want to support a major corporate network. When it comes to inexpensive home networking, though, this product is everything you'd ever need. Our 3-computer home network has never been jammed, we have never experienced any difficulties with the hub, and setup was a complete breeze. Just make sure you buy the right cables for the job (there's yellow patch cables, and regular ethernet cables -- talk to your local computer store representative to sort out this issue.. they'll know). I personally knew nothing about home networks before I decided to set up my own, but all in all I'm definitely glad I decided to use this inexpensive option to set up our network. You'll definitely appreciate the nice light up LED's which tell you when and where data is being transferred. Did I mention we even use the hub to give cable modem access to all 3 of our computers, with only one actual cable modem? Isn't that great?

(More customer reviews)I purchased this hub as part of a network starter kit (2 PCI ethernet cards + hub) and had no problems installing it. I run both Unix/Linux and Windoze machines and wanted all machines to be networked even with a mix of operating systems running at the same time -- and that meant simultaneous internet access, multi-player games, shared printers, etc. Basically, I wanted the network to do everything, so that any family member could sit down at a machine and do what they needed to do.
The DS-104 hub delivered from the time I installed it until the day I replaced it with a router (RT-314, also from Netgear). Installation was a snap, and as soon as I turned it on, I never had a moment's trouble from the DS-104.
So why did I switch? In two words, performance and price. Although the DS-104 is a fine product, its multiuser performance simply can't compare to a switch (which was built-in to the RT-314 router I replaced it with). I noticed that performance suffered when all of us wanted to use the computers simultaneously, which got me thinking about alternatives to improve performance. I initially intended to replace the DS-104 with a switch. After checking prices, I realized that I could actually purchase a router (switch + hardware firewall) for less than the cost of a switch alone. I eventually went that route, after receiving outstanding service from the DS-104 hub.
So was this purchase a throw-away? Hardly. The DS-104 did what it promised to do, reliably and without fuss. It handles both 10 and 100 Mbps connections transparently, so you don't even need to know the speed of whatever you're connecting. It's well-constructed (metal case instead of plastic) and absolutely reliable. Although I've replaced the DS-104 with a router, I haven't gotten rid of it -- I'm saving it for the day when I need to add several machines to the network and I'm out of ports on my router.
The DS-104 is solid, dependable networking at a very reasonable price. Recommended.

Cisco-Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch Review

(More customer reviews)Like a number of the other reviews mentioned, the PSUS4 works fine as a printserver but the included setup software isn't worth even removing from the box. I am by no means a networking expert but I had the time to tinker with the device and found that you really need to be ready to configure the PSUS4 directly using your browser and then configure each computer for local printing by creating a new TCP/IP port using the IP address of the unit and configuring it for printing to "USB1". If this sounds complicated it really isn't and with a bit of searching you can find quick and easy instructions from an article on the Linksys website (note the lack of mentioning USB1 in the article).
Long story short, don't buy this if you want plug and play but if you have a basic understanding of networking you will find this works fine after a bit of a painful initial setup. I found that it took much longer just to find the information I needed than actually setting up the unit.

(More customer reviews)The NetGear FS108 is a great Fast Ethernet switch for small workgroups, featuring a sturdy construction (from the metal casing to the RJ45 connectors) and excellent performance. Packet forwarding rates are what you would expect for under 10 dollars per port, and I experienced no problems whatsoever in hooking up machines with many different brands of network cards. Even mixing cards with different speed ratings caused no issues, unlike with some other cheap 10/100 Ethernet switches I could mention. The only concerns I have with this unit are that it sometimes seems to forward certain unicast packets to all switch ports for no apparent reason, and that it runs extremely hot, as another review already mentioned.
As for some negative points mentioned by the other reviews: the switch works just fine with non-Windows machines (I would expect someone running multiple OSes to be able to troubleshoot simple connectivity issues, without resorting to technical support, which typically tends to be "Windows only" for pretty much *any* product...) and, while indeed not supporting full-duplex 100Mb/s non-blocking switching across all ports concurrently, this is not something you would expect from a workgroup-class switch anyway, nor something most users will ever need.
In short, if you're looking for an affordable way to build a well-performing small 10/100BaseT network, the NetGear FS108 is the way to go!

(More customer reviews)Our office used to use a handful of the EN-104 4-port hubs and some of the EN-108 (the 8-port version of the same product).
As 10 Mbps hubs go, the EN-104's are really nice.
The quality of NetGear equipment has always impressed me:
- Nice sturdy metal construction instead of plastic.
- Status indicators built into the jacks, so you can easily tell which cable is connected and is active.
- Right-angled barrel power connector which reduce the likelihood of disconnecting power accidentally.
- With an easy-to-access switch, Port 1 toggles between station mode and uplink mode. Unlike some hubs where two jacks are wired together, this design prevents accidentally shorting a station to an uplink.
- Screw-mount notches on the underside allows for easy attachment to the wall, underside of a counter, etc.
If you want to set up a network without spending much, these hubs work well. However, I suggest you buy a 10/100 Mbps hub instead.
Here's why:
Practically all new networkable devices today support 100 Mbps (FastEthernet) as well as 10 Mbps (Ethernet). The EN-104 hub (and other 10 Mbps hubs) will limit you to the slower speed.
As 10/100 Mbps hubs are readily available today, and are quite affordable, I think your money is better spent on the faster hub.
Is there a noticeable difference between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps? It depends on your usage, but if you regularly work with files larger than about 300 KBytes or larger, you'll notice a tangible difference. For truly large files (like graphics/movies, or when installing an application via a network drive), a 10 second transfer at 100 Mbps will take well over a minute at 10 Mbps.
If the NetGear 10/100 hub (DS-104) is a bit too pricey for you, you might consider the Linksys EFAH05W 10/100 hub. Though not as "nice" as NetGear equipment, the Linksys 10/100 hub is only a few dollars more than this NetGear 10 Mbps hub.

I wish it wouldn't automatically disconnect the chosen printer so fast (3 minutes) but it does work like it states it would and I would recommend it to anyone looking to solve the same problem I had and especially when using Windows 7. I tried another unit that was 3 times as expensive but it wouldn't work with Windows 7.

I also had trouble recognizing some of my SDHC 8 gig cards with the extension I was using so I wouldn't have to keep turning the computer around. I plugged the unit into a USB port and hooked up the power unit to a power strip. Everything worked that I plugged in including the Lightscribe DVD recorder, something I have had trouble hooking up with a hub before. One day I forgot to turn on the power strip I use for the unit and it still worked. I now use Velcro to attach it to the desk so it stays put and I plug my cards into it without a problem. I like the one on top, it makes it easy to attach the cards. Also the hub has a red light which is lit when the unit is on. My new Mac goes to sleep when left alone for a short time and has no indicator to let you know it is asleep. As long as the power strip is off the red light is only on when the computer is on. Since I don't have to keep the power strip on the red light is my indicator for the status of the computer, nice. If you have had problems with hubs before get this one, it works great.

(More customer reviews)With switch prices coming down to about $10-per-port, it's hard to justify buying anything less than a 10/100-switch for all but the most cost-conscious buyer.
As most 5-port 10/100 switches have the same capabilities and cost about the same, there's not much to distinguish one from another. Still, I particularly like the Netgear FS-105 5-port switch. Like other products from Netgear, this switch is a little nicer than the competition because it has:
- Nice sturdy metal construction instead of plastic. The case also has a grounding tab in case you're using the switch in a (electrically) high-noise environment.
- Connection status indicators built into the jacks, so you can easily tell which cable is connected and is active. (The "vistajack" feature.)
- Right-angled barrel power connector which reduce the likelihood of disconnecting power accidentally.

The Netgear product is not the cheapest 10/100-switch (check out the D-Link Fast Ethernet Switch, for example), but for overall design and value-for-money, I still like the Netgear the most.

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100) Review

(More customer reviews)I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down. Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.
This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*. It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.
... EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.
I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).
Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now. It functions just as a switch should: without a thought. It just works.

(More customer reviews)The posts that are complaining about sharing devices, connection issues, etc. need to understand that the problem is with the USB protocol and not the device. USB devices are not designed, or even able, to run on multiple devices at once. Have you ever plugged an external drive into two computer at the same time? Why would this be any different? If you need to access a hard drive from multiple computers at the same time, get a NAS drive. The device also is not designed to power external drives, like the usb powered western digital drives noted in a review. I actually have gotten one to work with no problem, but after talking to a few Belkin guys they don't really know what will or won't work with the device. Any drive that has its own power supply should work with no problems.
Also, you can share between computer easily. If you have to do something with a different computer, you can either request the devices (sort of like IMing) or just click on the disconnect button. Simple, like ejecting a device.
If you understand what this, its awesome and works like a charm. I've gotten all sorts of cool stuff, from midi devices, DVD Burners, Printers, Scanners,cameras,etc. to work with it. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 star is because I accidently plugged in the wrong power cable (12v not the 5v) and blew out the power supply. It should have a buffer, but Belkin replaced it for the cost of shipping, so I can't be to upset about. I actually found myself missing it within a few days of messing with wires!

(More customer reviews)A wireless USB hub is very appealing. The implementation of this one makes it useless.
The software only runs on Windows XP. There are no Vista drivers. The hub does not work until you've logged in and even then, it takes a few seconds. Since you have to have log in before the hub will work, your mouse and keyboard can't be plugged in to the wireless hub. This also means that USB audio devices that must be plugged in at boot will not work. I don't understand why Windows requires USB audio devices to be plugged in at boot, but that's Microsoft's fault, not Belkins.
It gets better. Yesterday, we rebooted the machine and my brother logged in with his account. The wireless hub didn't work at all because the software wasn't installed for him. Why would the installer even bother installing this software for only one user? No problem, we installed the software on his account. Reboot. Everything seemed to work. Fast user switch to my account and the software freaks out because the software running on his account is using the device. The USB devices attached to that hub go offline.
To Summarize:
- No Vista support
- Can't use it for keyboard/mouse
- No support for multiple user accounts
- Fast user switching messes it up
However tempted you may be, don't buy this product until they address these issues. This product is not ready for prime time. On the plus side, it seems like all of these problems are just related to software. If Belkin decides to, they could probably fix all of these problems in software.
