Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem Review

Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I replaced an older Actiontec modem as I thought it may have been the culprit in some home network problems I was having. I have Qwest DSL as a service provider and upgraded to an Actiontec PK-5000. I also have an apple tv 2g at home. I discovered however through trial and error that the PK-5000 does not support the apple tv as it should. If plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable I was fine but it would not recognize it wirelessly.
I stopped at best buy and picked this up for 98 bucks. The store associates didn't' even recognize it as something they carried. Regardless I brought it home and hooked it up.
1.The installation is not exactly flawless. You need to know your ISP's user name for your modem to access their network. (among other things)
2.The modem won't always recognize that password. If this happens after or during installation, reset the modem by holding down the reset button for 15 sec. + then find it in your browser. The address is not typical and you should look at the little book that comes with it.
3.There is only ONE phone jack in the back so unless you have a splitter you can't have DSL and your phone going through this modem.
4.The menus for configuration could certainly be a nicer interface BUT if you know your way around security protocols and have ½ a brain you should be able to fumble through and make your wireless secure.
5.It recognized apple tv 2g through its wireless connection in short order, I simply had to re-input my security key.
6.Your home laptop may tell you that your security settings don't match the wireless settings of the network. (delete the wireless connection and re-look for wireless connections) Again fumble your way through and you'll get it.
Now I will say that through all of my fumbling around I had it set up and working on my desktop, laptop, Wii, and apple tv 2g in about 40 minutes. It seems to work great, pages seem to load quickly, speed tests are averaging the same as they were before (that being said, the rural community I live in is having serious speed issues with qwest) and there is peace in the valley. It's a bit more spendy than other DSL modems but it does support ADSL2, does allow Ethernet connections (3 not 4 as one is used for your DSL connection) and it is a low profile unit that hides well in your office. The biggest drawbacks I see are the telephone jack and the price you pay for "commercial grade firewall protection" ummmm ok I saw nothing on this modem that was not on my 5 year old modem as far as security goes but it does have plenty of security that YOU MUST ENABLE it is not automatic. (Some people seem to think this is the case...weird)
I will update this review if anything changes...Happy Surfing!

The EH100 was basically plug-and-play.
The IP given in the setup guide was wrong.
What it should have been is:192.168.0.1
Once that was corrected, setup was easy.
I was able to use my laptop in another room

I installed this router yesterday and have been regretting my decision of buying it ever since. It keeps on dropping connections every 2-3 minutes which drives me crazy. The signal strength is always low even though the router is placed about 3 feet away from my laptop. I tried all possible settings and still couldn't get it to work properly. Previously I owned a D-Link wireless router which worked perfectly, but it stopped working after a year after which I made the mistake of buying this Linksys router. Please make sure you ask other people how this router works for them before you plan on buying it.

Vtech 6800G Plug and Share Wireless Router (802.11g) Review

Vtech 6800G Plug and Share Wireless Router (802.11g)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This router is an excellent value. i got this and the AT&T 6500G for 50 at COMP U.S.A. I decided to go for this because after searching for hours for the "perfect" router, i saw pretty much everything had mixed reviews. This one had no reviews so i thought what the heck, i'd try it out. Setup was so simple, i was amazed. After hearing everybody's complaints about setup, i was stunned at how easy this was. Just follow the directions right out of the box and you're set. The speed is great. I can load pages just as fast (cable modem) as with a wired ethernet connection. The only thing i think might be an issue with people who have huge houses is range. I have a house that is about 45 feet long, and the router is at one end of it on the ground floor. I took my notebook upstairs on the opposite end of the house and i had 3 bars our of 5. I'm not sure how it will perform in big house. But keep in mind that my notebook does not have an ATT PC Card. the computer i hooked up with the ATT PCI Card gets 5 bars from about 30 feet away on teh same floor, through a wall. Since the range doesn't affect me, I still gave it 5 stars. Great design too, looks nice sitting on top of my PC. Go get this thing, it is a great deal.

I've had this product for a few weeks and it has worked OK so far. If you're a Mac user, note that the setup/configuration software on the CD it comes with is for Windows only, and nowhere (that I could find) in the written instructions does it tell you what to do if you own a Mac. However, it is Mac-compatible; you can set it up through an internet browser. After some searching online, I found this solution:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=264789
which is similar to a solution buried in the more extensive setup instructions downloadable (in pdf form) from the TrendNet website.

PowerAP N Ultra-Long Range WiFi Router Review

PowerAP N Ultra-Long Range WiFi Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no doubt that this access point puts out more power than any other wireless router that I've ever found. And it has fantastic firmware that offers customization and features that you simply cannot find on any other product. Heck, it even includes a spectrum analyzer so you can look at the 2.4 Ghz signals around you and find the clearest channel to set-up your network on. Their spectrum analyzer picks up all signals (including non 802.11), so you can be sure that your channel is actually clear.
There is one big BUT! And it is a big one.
There is a problem with the antenna connectors. When you screw an antenna on them, they come loose. And if you keep trying to screw the antenna connector on them, the internal leads connecting the antenna connectors twist and become damaged, preventing any of that power from getting to the antennas.
I tried two of these units and had to return both of them because the antenna connectors came loose. I posted to Ubiquiti's online forums, but so far, nobody from Ubiquity has responded. Ubiquiti's online forums have a similar complaint from a guy who bought 10 of them and found several with loose antenna connectors.
Although I repeatedly reached out to Ubiquiti (by e-mail, forum, and telephone) and asked if they were aware of the problem or making any efforts to fix it, they denied knowing anything about it (even though its posted in their own technical support forum) and here at Amazon.
And so, I urge you to wait. I suspect that eventually, Ubiquiti will fix this problem (even though they don't acknowledge its existence). And when they do, this will be an awesome product.

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Speedbooster (WUSB54GS) Review

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Speedbooster (WUSB54GS)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It took me hours to finally get the Linksys WUSB54GS network adapter to work on a Win XP box with my Linksys WRT54GS router. The solution was to use the XP Wireless Zero configuration tool instead of the supplied Linksys Wireless Network Monitor!
I used the supplied driver installation CD-ROM v1.15 to install the drivers for the WUSB54GS, plug the adapter in and it was able to associate with the router but couldn't acquire an IP address. I had WPA-PSK + AES security turned on and SSID broadcast disabled. When I enabled SSID broadcast *OR* disabled WPA security, the adapter could connect and acquire an IP address. Go figure.
Finally, I switched to XP Wireless Zero Configuration. Bingo! The adapter was able to connect and acquire an IP address, with all the above security features still in place.
Apparently, the installation software v1.15 solved the "res.dll" error that people complained about in their reviews. If you can get the adapter working with the Linksys Wireless Network Monitor, great! Otherwise, give the Wireless Zero Configuration tool a try (of course if you are using Win XP).
The wireless connection seems to be relatively stable. It stays connected at 54Mbps most of the time. Occasionally it drops to 48Mbps or 36Mbps, but then manages to get back to 54Mbps. Signal strength stays around Very Good to Excellent (adapter is one floor above the router). Nevertheless, I occasionally get a lost packet when I do a ping but it's less than 1%, which doesn't seem to affect any network activities such as websurfing and transferring huge files though.

I originally purchased a Linksys DSL/Cable router because of a clerk's recommendation. It never worked even after I took it back and got a replacement. I then purchased a Netgear ProSafe router which sort of worked with the BellSouth DSL modem but still had all sorts of packet losses. I went back to the store and purchased the Belkin Cable/DSL router and it worked flawlessly right out of the box! I ran the set-up cd-rom, attached the cables, and I was on-line in 3 minutes. I then hooked in my wife's computer and laptop and they too worked after booting. If you have BellSouth DSL or any other "finicky" ISP, this router is the one to get, it saved the day!!

U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg Router (USR5461) Review

U.S. Robotics Wireless MAXg Router (USR5461)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would actually rate it closer to 4.5 stars. The range is comparable to the Linksys WRT54G v5 that it replaced so don't be discouraged by the single antenna on the USR5461.
The router software interface is simple and pretty straight forward. I don't think the options are laid out as nicely as with Linksys and D-Link, but it still works well. The HTML code is a bit sloppy because it doesn't render as well in Firefox as it does in Internet Explorer. The interface is still usable with FF though.
The print server is VERY easy to setup and works perfectly with our Brother HL-1440 laser printer. Once the router detects the printer, it creates a network printer address (which you get by logging in), which you just enter in the Add Printer Wizard in Windows. You'll need to install drivers for your printer, but no drivers or special configuration is needed to connect to the print server.
Transferring files wirelessly using normal 54mbps mode is decently fast. I transferred about 700MB of files wirelessly in about 10 minutes from a computer downstairs to my laptop upstairs. Both computers use 11g wireless cards made by different companies: Shuttle PN18 and D-Link DWL-G650.
The DHCP server doesn't let me manually associate IP addresses to MAC addresses, but that isn't a big issue. My old D-Link 713p let me do that, which made port forwarding a lot easier.
My biggest complaint is that Bittorrent will slow http traffic to a crawl when it's connecting to peers and seeds. This doesn't happen all the time, and once the torrent is going, everything works smoothly and quickly.
Also, the firmware is open source, but the router itself does not have enough memory to hold any of the current opensource firmwares like OpenWRT or DD-WRT. The processor that the router uses is supposed to be compatible though. Maybe someone will come up with something once the router becomes more popular.

This DSL Modem w/Wi-Fi has worked for over 3 years without a burp! I have used the wireless connection that I purchased with this modem on my desktop computer since day 1. In the beginning, I had the Modem hooked up to a 2nd desktop; but since I moved in 6 months ago, the Modem is not hooked up to anything except the phone line, and everything still works flawlessly.
I have also used laptops with this modem in addition to the wireless 2Wire brand wi-fi receiver. I had absolutely no problem connecting to my network using the easy to install 2Wire software.
This modem was provided as a package with SBC Yahoo when I started using it. I have moved out of their coverage area and it is working flawlessly with a different provider.
One last thing I must mention; The 2Wire FIREWALL is perfect! No one outside my network has ever was able to connect to it - not even next door neighbors. When I was in SBC territory I often connected to my neighbors DSL when SBC was down (I lived in a rural area with lots of trees = DSL down more frequently than in a city).
It has been the same since I have moved to a different area. My network is rock solid - no one else can connect - but I still have the advantage of being able to connect to at least 5 neighbors now wirelessly during the infrequent times that my DSL is down here in the city.
I've had many DSL and Broadband modems over the years (I'm a frequent mover) and after using the 2Wire brand, I'm completely spoiled! I will never use anything else!

Now you can enjoy wireless home-network access in those hard-to-reach rooms and--simultaneously--get faster networking and Internet performance, too. The WRT54GX Wireless-G broadband router from Linksys uses the company's advanced SRX (Speed and Range eXpansion) technology to enhance the speed and the reach of a Wireless-G (802.11g) network. The WRT54GX can provide faster wireless network throughput, reduce dead spots, and increase wireless range over standard Wireless-G networks. The handy WRT54GX serves as an Internet-sharing router, a four-port 10/100 switch, and an SRX-enhanced Wireless-G access point all at once. Relative to standard 80 2.11g technology, a network using all SRX products can extend network reach up to three times as far and boost wireless network speed by up to eight times. (Actual throughput, speed, and range depend on a host of factors, from building materials to network traffic and distance from the router.) The device is Wi-Fi-certified and backward compatible with 802.11b (Wireless-B), 802.11g (Wireless-G) and, of course, other Linksys SRX products. Mixed wireless environments such as networks containing SRX, Wireless-B, and Wireless-G products can operate each client at its own maximum data rate. SRX products maintain their higher speed and range, providing the throughput and quality of service to deliver applications such as VoIP (Internet telephony) and video streaming. SRX is based on MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) technology, a key component in the upcoming Wireless-N (802.11n) standard. To improve range and speed, MIMO uses two radios and three antennas on a wireless router or client adapter. To enhance data protection and privacy, the router can encode all wireless trans missions with WPA (Wireless Protection Access). Its powerful Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall enhances protection to all the wired and wireless PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks while also supporting VPN passthrough. Configuration is easy using a Web-browser-based configuration utility. What's in the Box Wireless-G broadband router, a setup CD-ROM with Symantec Internet Security, a u ser's guide on CD-ROM, an AC power adapter, an Ethernet network cable, a quick-i nstallation guide, and a registration card.

T-Mobile Linksys RJ-11 Router - Wireless router - 4-port switch - 802.11b/g - VoIP phone adapter - desktop - T-Mobile Review

T-Mobile Linksys RJ-11 Router - Wireless router - 4-port switch - 802.11b/g - VoIP phone adapter - desktop - T-Mobile
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
T-Mobile sent this unit to me for use with their "AtHome" service. Setup is pretty straightforward, plug in your SIM card, notify T-Mobile so they can activate it (arrange for 911 location service), plug in your RJ-11 phone and you're in business.
You get a nice landline phone with a dial-tone, clear connection, rj-11 plug for any standard kind of phone, 911 service, etc. However, there are two BIG problems.
The first is that the RJ-11 interface is a very low power one. In other words, it will only power one phone at the most -and even that phone must use very little landline power or it will cause problems where you suddenly find yourself without service. Originally I tried connecting two phones to the unit with a splitter. The ring voltage on the Linksys is not enough to power two ringing phones. As a result, if a call comes in the phones will not ring properly and cause a power loss that messes up the router, dropping it's connection to the internet and disabling your phone service until you give it a restart. Even if you have only one phone, it better not have a loud ringer or a lighted keypad or you'll have similar problems. I ended up having to shell out an extra $300 for a ring & line voltage booster (from Viking). I now have 4 phones connected without issue.
The other problem is Wifi range. My original router was a Netgear which I was very happy with. In order to use the AtHome service I have to replace my old router & Wifi with this Linksys. The Netgear used to give me 4 full bars all over my house where with the Linksys, I can only get two bars if I'm anything over 20 feet away from it. I tried connecting a better antenna which only slightly helped. Wifi output power is simply too low (and unlike other Wifi devices, the Linksys doesn't offer configuration settings to increase or decrease transmit power).
Cisco/Linksys would have saved a lot of people a lot of aggravation if they only designed the thing with a little more power from the get go.
T-Mobile's At Home service is a decent value until you add in all the time, effort and additional equipment needed to make it work properly. They require a two year commitment and I have to say at this point I'm sorry I ever signed up for it.

ZyXEL X-550 Xtrememimo 802.11G MIMO Wireless Broadband Router Review

After my Linksys WRT54G failed, I was not looking forward to another wireless router installation 'experience'. It took the better part of one day to install the Linksys with the aid of multiple downloaded documents from their web site to finally get the right combination to work. The Linksys was still in warranty when it failed, but no amount of money or service would convince me to continue using this unit. I was tired of having to reconfigure it about once a month when it would just decide to quit working.
So, thanks to high ratings for the Zyxel X-550 router on Amazon.com, I thought I would go this route. I am not a real technical writer so I am not going to get into the comptuer buzz words that the geeks will use (I do not understand what they say anyway). I do not care how it works, as long as it works and is easy to install.
Well, I followed the basic installation instructions and it was working within minutes. I use a Bellsouth provided DSL modem and there was absolutely not one single hang up to get on-line in just a few minutes. Setting up the security encryption was just about as easy.
I have used the Zyxel X-550 for several months now without a hiccup. I have two, and sometimes three, different brands of wireless access points connected most of the time without any problems. I did add a Zyxel directional antenna to one unit which was in a bad location.
The Zyxel X-550 is easy to configure and is now basically one of those items I just ignore and forget about because it just does its job day in and day out and needs no attention.

Linksys WRK54G 4-Port Wireless-G Broadband Router Review

Linksys WRK54G 4-Port Wireless-G Broadband Router

I hate this device with every fiber of my being. Clearly the worst computer related device ever created since the beginning of computer history and quite possibly the worst consumer product of all time. Yup, it's that bad.
Every morning when I get up, I have to reset this thing, because it hardly ever makes it through the night holding a connection. All sorts of things make it lose connection. Connecting to multiple computers makes it lose connection. Long idle periods make it lose connection. Ever so slight power blinks make it lose connection. And seemingly, presence of oxygen makes it lose connection.
The worst thing you can do is what I did...set this router up with stairs between your primary computer and the router. Or, it could be the best, depending on the level of exercise you require in your life. Last year, I was able to participate in a 10K run, thanks in large part to my involuntary stair training regimen.
Honestly, it got so bad that I installed a Handy Switch Wireless Light Switch; one of those wireless switches that you can use to control lights or whatever that plug into the wall. Now, when it locks up (every 13.6 minutes), I reach under the end table where I installed the switch and reset it. (Thanks, Billy Mays!) This has made living with the WRK54G a little more tolerable, but has added another $15 in operating costs that could have been used to buy a REAL router.
Every so often, I try again to run encryption on the WRK54G. Everything works as well as can be expected for a few months, then the WRK54G suddenly refuses to allow anything to connect, even with the correct passcode. Nothing makes any difference, even trying another computer still results in no connection with the router. At that point the only thing to do is disable encryption entirely or stop using wireless. After about a week, I can once again enable encryption, with the EXACT same password, and magically, all computers hook to it just fine. WHY????
Rarely do I take so adamant a stance in recommending against a product, but Linksys has destroyed my enjoyment of computing, so I will be very honest about this. If you're thinking about the WRK54G, instead, try to find a Carrot Top DVD (such as Chairman of the Board) and put that in your DVD player on Repeat. Turn the volume up all the way and tape your eyes open. You'll come out far cheaper and still not be as aggrivated as you would buying the WRK54G.

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really 3 devices in 1 box. First, there's a wireless access point, which lets you connect a Wireless-G (802.11g) or Wireless-B (802.11b) device to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect 4 PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, files and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space.
