Gateway SX2801-05 Desktop (Black) Review

This is a quick review as I got this yesterday and I wanted it fresh in my mind. Bear in mind I was a tech for several years before I retired. It didn't do all I thought it would but that's dish and windows fault primairly. I bought this with a new 42 inch plasma, wireless logitech keyboard and mouse, with the intent of surfin and watching tv from my recliner ! Guess what, it works DYNAMITE. Everything went together like butter in less than two hours and then I started fine tuning. I really took a while to dig out how to set up the web to be able to read it at a distance but it can be done and the info is out there, just takes some digging. The other problem was getting windows media player to play and record tv programs off dish's tv 2 output, was ready to pull what little hair I have left out, but persistance paid off .I told the thing a couple of lies and wala it works. one of the amazing things I used the HDMI out of the set top as one input to the tv and the HDMI output of the 2801 as the other . Switched back n forth on the same movie the set top feed was 720 and the PC output was 1080. So definately some serious upscaling on the pc side. To my ol eyes the pictures were about equal and the input to the pc was 480 over a rg 6 cable. So it is doing every thing I hoped as I sit here in my recliner and type this. The only other thing that took time was setting up the browser to display as I wanted it. Over all this is a great system, lighting fast for surfin the web. I am not a gamer so I have all the speed I need here. Try it you may like it. If I have problems I will come back and up date this but I don't expect any.
UPDATE- Well its been on line 3+ weeks now without a burp. The more I use it the better I like it. I haven't been on he desktop since I got it except to set up and transfer some files, Windows 7 and a good router made that a breeze. The other nice thing is with the size and speed of this systen I added all my music to it so I can listen to a nice varity of music and not worry about space. I added another CDR to it as I wanted light scribe and its always nice to be able to direct copy. cost me $55. If I keep adding files I may need more HD somewhere down the road and the eSATA port will make that easy.
Update::::: Well I lowered the stars from 5 to 3 I just emailed tech with a simple question ..... Is the pcie x 16 slot video only and they offered to put me in contact with customer support for a small fee !!!!! are you kidding me, pay for an answer to a question that should be avaliable in documentarion. Btw the documention is a pos.
I think gateway is trying to replace packard bell. The old techs will remember them well lol. Reason being Thanks to A poor description of the outputs on the JBOD i just bought off amazon (it requires 2 esata slots not 1 as the same product with raid does) So I got stuck and tried to put in a pcie card. The system is still doing a good job but I doubt i will ever bother trying to repair it if it fails as no help or documention makes it impossible to do.

Netopia 3347NWG-006 Review

I decided to take a chance on a refurbished unit as I've had good luck on other refurbished electronics. This arrived and worked right out of the box. I was lacking the instruction sheet but found plenty of info online, particularly through the BellSouth support page for Netopia gateways. I had a little confusion, thinking that the modem wasn't working correctly, but determined that (Imagine the odds) both my DSL service initially went down and when it finally came back up, my iGoogle page was down. Anyway, turned out not to be the gateway. It works great, is fast, has what appears to be a well-made power adapter, and I like that the lights are larger than the 2Wire and D-Link gateways I've had in the past. Hooking up wireless to my notebook was a no-brainer. I personalized the SSID and turned on NAT but after that it worked well and was fast. I'd have no problems recommending the Netopia 3347NWG-006 and if you can find a good refurbished model from a reputable dealer, go with it and save some bucks!

ASUS WL330GE Wireless pocket access point Review

ASUS WL330GE Wireless pocket access point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought two of these, one to use as a wireless adapter and one as a repeater. My primary wireless router is a Dlink DIR-622 running the original 1.11 firmware.
Initial setup is fairly easy. The manual is TERRIBLE but you really don't need it for basic setup. Out of the box, or after a hard reset, the device is in "Gateway Mode" with it's DHCP server active and ready to hand out addresses in the 192.168.1 subnet. Connect it to a PC's ethernet port, open your browser to http://192.168.1.220 and you get the configuration screen. From there, it is easy to choose one of the other (3) modes and make a connection to your wireless network.
If you want to make additional configuration changes to other parameters, it gets harder. Once you switch from Gateway mode to one of the other (3), the device no longer acts as a DHCP server for the ethernet port; rather, it effectively becomes a device with a static IP of 192.168.1.220. To make additional configuration changes, you must open your PC's TCP/IP settings and change from DHCP (i.e., "obtain an IP address automatically") to a static address (i.e., "use the following IP address") in the 192.168.1 range. Only then can you again open your browser and use http://192.168.1.220 to access the device.
I setup the first unit in "Adapter mode", configured it for wpa2 and then connected it to my Dish Network 622 dvr. Everything connected and worked perfectly.
I have a large house with my wireless router at the North end, so signal quality at the South end of the house is poor. I configured the second wl-330ge for "Repeater mode" and placed it near the center of my house. Devices in the South end now get excellent signal quality from the centrally located wl-330ge repeater. Devices that used to get 6mbps now hit 35mbps.
Both my units came with firmware 2.0.1.8, but I noticed a newer 2.0.1.9 firmware on the ASUS web site with 11-23-2009 release date. As it mentioned a fix related to Repeater mode, I decided to download it and update both units. I then hard reset and reconfigured them. The one in Adapter mode still worked just fine. The one in Repeater mode ceased to function; devices would connect to it momentarily then lose the connection. After several hard resets and reconfiguration cycles, I gave up and flashed it back to 2.0.1.8, and it immediately started working again. If you are using Repeater mode, I recommend avoiding the 2.0.1.9 firmware.

High Performance 3G/4G Wireless N Router and DLNA Media Server with Bit Torrent download -IEEE 802.11n up to 300Mbps Video file and data center Review

High Performance 3G/4G Wireless N Router and DLNA Media Server with Bit Torrent download -IEEE 802.11n up to 300Mbps Video file and data center

Bit torrent is great for sharing stuff. But it consumes too much electricity if your powerful desktop machine just runs the whole day for downloading stuff. So I am looking for something more energy efficient.
I was attracted to the ezdownloader from another maker. But it price tag was a little high and I guess there must be a competitor out there with a better price/feature ratio. So I researched the US Market and then the TW and HK market. There are definitely similar products with much cheaper price. Finally I came to this one - the Sapido 3G N+ Wireless Audio/Video Router.
What this is:
- A wireless router - that serve as any other router out there, you may just hook it up to a DSL/cable modem to get wifi at your home/office.
- A NAT server - you may attach a USB drive to it and access the drive as as SAMBA network drive. The drive can be format to NTFS. I believe the limit is 1.5TB. I am using only a 250GB so it is good enough for me.
- Webcam server - I haven't tested this feature yet. As the spec indicates, you should be able to plug in a webcam and access it from a webpage. It sounds fun, isn't it?
- Finally, the most important factor - A BT downloader. You access this router via a webpage interface, upload the .torrent file, and it will download the contents for you! It allows a list of 20 torrents, with 2 active download running. Unlike the ezdownloader, where you must use the vendor's website to control the download, this router will be access from the LAN only. Depends on how your LAN gateway is set up, you can assign this router as your Web server at your current IP. If you do that, then you may access the router from outside (anywhere over the world).
The set up was not straight forward for non-geeky users. But just be patient and you should be done in 30 minutes. There is no manual provided - only a big folded piece of the instruction paper with diagrams. Since my broadband gateway is already wireless, I use this a wireless Access Point. Yes, you can use this a wireless "client" to your existing wireless network. Then itself can be used as a wired + wireless access point. There are four ethernet ports available to use. I hook my PS3 and XBOX to it and it works great!
The samba network drive can be detected by the PS3 automatically. I am able to watch the movies directly from the PS3 without doing anything extra.
The Pros:
- A lot of feature to play with.
- Wireless AP (the 3G network feature is not tested, but could be a big plus to someone)
- Support BT
- Support Samba
- Upgradable firmware
- Web access from outsideThe Cons:
- BT page not compatible completely with all web-browsers. It likes Firefox and IE more.
- Can't handle Asian character sets - all characters of the downloading file name will be converted to hex byte representation of the character. It makes reading back of the file name difficult sometimes. Not a problem if the file was created before hand and copied to the USB drive.
- The saved path sometimes can not be handled by Windows explorer, if you plug the USB drive to your PC. However, you may use a ftp client to ftp to the router and access the drive to rename the files before moving back to Windows.
=> It definitely can do some improvement on the file system.
Conclusion: overall this product is great product of integrated features. However, I did spend some effort finding it. I think the sales department from Sapido should promote it a little better so a bigger consumer crowd can see its availability.

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem Review

Motorola SURFboard Gateway SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

When evaluating this type of equipment, one must differentiate between the device itself and other factors that can impact its performance. Blaming the manufacturer for issues likely caused by one's ISP is akin to saying, "I can't get past third gear because of all this construction on the highway... I'll never buy a Jaguar again!"
That said, the SBG6580 is a solid piece of kit.
This latest addition to the SURFboard line combines a DOCSIS 3 cable modem with a gigabit switch and a dual-antenna 802.11n wireless access point, providing all the networking equipment a home office needs in a single compact package... this amounts to a single point of failure, but that's par for the residential course. It can deliver 42 mbps downstream on a single channel (which my provider brands "Lightning") with support for eight bonded channels... meaning that when the day comes that ISPs start selling triple-digit speeds, this gateway won't need to be replaced.
Wi-Fi performance has been comparable to my old draft n router with similar range and throughput in a mixed mode environment. What sets the SBG6580 apart are its better indicator lights and superior configuration utility which offers some settings normally found only on enterprise-grade equipment. Those less inclined to tinker should know that push-button support is provided; once the cable guy finished with the wall outlet, setup took less than five minutes.
Finally, one word of caution: the SBG6580 needs airflow. I originally placed it flush against a similarly-sized backup hard drive on my desk and found the unit hot to the touch after a few hours. To avoid problems, do not block the vents.

Netopia 3347-02 ADSL2 Wireless Router (Bulk Packaged) Review

Netopia 3347-02 ADSL2 Wireless Router (Bulk Packaged)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent gateway for a good price.
The item I purchased (marked "Bulk Packaged") came with a phone cable, network cable, power cable, and the router itself. No CDs or manuals of any type were included. However, the bottom of the device had a link to the support website, where manuals were available. The manual was not exactly the same as what I had, but close enough to be useful.
The following information might be helpful for people who are looking at it.
(1) The "router" is actually a "gateway". For all intents and purposes, it would replace several devices- an ADSL2/2+ modem, a wireless access point, a router, and 4 ethernet ports.
(2) Note on Wireless: the WIRELESS part might be disabled by default, depending on initial settings. You will need to connect via a WIRED connection in order to set up the wireless the first time. See below for more information.
(3) If you are concerned that there might be settings on the device from other users, or just want to be sure to start with a clear slate, power up the device, then take a paperclip or similar small object and use it to push and hold the reset button for 3-5 seconds. This will reset your device to factory settings.
(4) Connectivity: In order to connect to the device, after plugging your cable in, go to your web browser and connect to http://192.168.1.254 (this is the default IP address). Mine defaulted to not asking for a user name and password, I set those up myself for added security. Note that the default user names are "Admin" and "User", and that they ARE case sensitive. (I forgot the capital A at first). This will let you in to the configuration screen. While there ARE a ton of options, there is a on-board help file (clicking "help" on any page will get you help for that page).
(5) All of the Model # 3347-02-1006 gateways are designed to be sold directly to various ISPs for the use of their customers. They each have specially designed firmware that makes it easier for the intended customers to connect. So, depending on which model you receive, you may end up with an initial screen that is for some other ISP. Don't panic. Just either put in something random or else click the "home" button (if visible) to get to more advanced settings.
(6) I received model 3347-02-1006L. This turned out to be a model originally designed for BellSouth. I was trying to connect to CenturyLink. I was able to do so fairly easily, though I needed to contact customer support at both places. Motorola/Netopia offers limited complimentary support for 15 days from the first time you contact them by phone.
(7) For anyone else who might be trying to use this for a CenturyLink account (to avoid having to rent a unit!), be aware that CenturyLink will not provide support for other modems, however they will give you the basic connection information you need. Here is a quick guide to setting up CenturyLink (at least in Ohio, might be different in other areas): Log in to device, as described in #4 above. Click "Expert Mode" then "Configure" then "WAN" then "ATM" (this step might be called something slightly different, like "Set up ATM circuits"). On this page, set VPI to 8, VCI to 35, and Encapsulation to RFC-1483 Bridged Ethernet. Click the little exclamation mark icon that will appear above, choose "Save and Restart" . When it comes back up, presto! Done.
(8) To set up wireless, be sure to enable it, and then be sure to change the security settings so that you have the most secure login you can. For most people, this will be "WPA-PSK". If you don't know what you're doing at this point, read up on it so that you don't leave your system open and unsecure.I hope that helps someone out there.
