D Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ Wireless 22MBPS Access Point Review

D Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ Wireless 22MBPS Access Point
Average Reviews:

I bought another one of these to repeat my existing 900AP+'s signal to extend the range of my wireless network. It works great since I set it all up 2 weeks ago. I am not able to go all the way out to my backyard by the pool and still have Internet access on my laptop. This is very convenient when swimming or just laying and you get the urge to look something up on the Internet, but usually you don't because the PC is so far away. Not anymore. I am now able to bring my laptop out with me and maybe watch a DVD outside while I BBQ or just drink with my friends.
The repeater function looks like it only repeats other D-Link products. It also brings the speeds down to 11Mbps when you are connected to the network via the repeater. If you can get a signal with the main AP, then you are able to maintain your 22Mbps speeds.
Everything else about this AP has worked great for me as well and I'd highly recommend it.

The D-Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ can be configured to perform in any one of four modes--as a wireless access point, as a point-to-point bridge with another access point, as a point-to-multipoint wireless bridge, or as a wireless client. It also includes an embedded DHCP server that, once enabled, will automatically assign IP addresses to wireless clients. It also eliminates the need for a separate DHCP server on the network. This unique feature is ideal for quickly creating a wireless local area network in offices or other workplaces, or a temporary network at trade shows or other events.
The DWL-900AP+ also features 256-bit WEP encryption for a higher level of security for your data and wireless communications.
The DWL-900AP+ is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.11b standard, making it interoperable with all existing 802.11b-compliant devices. But unlike standard 802.11b access points, its data transfer rate can be up to 20 percent faster. When your wireless network is comprised of other D-Link AirPlus products, such as the DWL-520+ wireless PCI adapter, the DWL-650+ wireless CardBus adapter, and the DI-614+ wireless router--transfer rates can be as high as 22 Mbps.

I wanted to connect my Xbox to the internet. The problem however, was that it was in a different room than my PC, and I didn't have the money to start a wireless network. So, I was very excited to see this product come out! But it seemed to good to be true... There must be a catch, right? Wrong!
I got it, and am very pleased with it. All I did was plug it in, and then I had instant internet access. I've had no trouble at all so far. The speed may not be the fastest available, but it's fast enough for me. There's almost no lag in games, and downloads usually don't take too long either. This is truly a great piece of hardware, and I would easily recommend it to anyone who wants to connect a device with ethernet ports, without wires, and without spending $100's. I must applaud Nyko.

US Robotics USR5441 Wireless MAXg Range Extender Review

US Robotics USR5441 Wireless MAXg Range Extender

I was a little worried when I bought this extender, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got it set up and working. Installation is pretty straight forward and the best part is that it will work with non-USRobotics Access Points (like my Asus WL-500g Deluxe). Be aware that not all extenders (like the Linksys) will work with APs that aren't from the same manufacturer. I was having a problem getting signal to a new Squeeze box located on a different floor but adding this little box did the trick.
One note on the install: if your AP is set not to broadcast it's SSID (usually not set by default), you might have a problem finding it even if you enter its MAC address into the extender's configuration. I simply re-enabled the SSID broadcast, found the AP, configured the extender and then disabled SSID broadcast again.

I purchased this product because my wireless router is upstairs and the reception we get downstairs is not good at all. Once I installed the new antenna (it was super easy) I immediately noticed improved reception downstairs. Places where I never had any service before were now giving me 2 bars on my iPad. an extra bonus was that I now get reception even on my back patio!!
I have tried several add-on antennas over the past few months and sent them all back becuase they did little to nothing but this one really works!

The Trident-2.4GHz WiFi Antenna offered by MP Antenna is an easy to install solution that plugs directly into the antenna port of your existing wireless device to increase wireless speed and connectivity in homes, buildings, parks, marinas and any real world obstructed environment. A large problem with many wireless networks is the poor coverage area of standard wireless devices due to inefficient antenna design. Unlike standard antennas, the Trident combines stunning visual design with Multi-Polarized antenna technology to create a spherical-like signal pattern. The Trident can be used in numerous applications where standard antenna technology can not maintain an adequate signal. In almost every Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) situation where obstructions wreak havoc on signal integrity, the Multi-Polarized Trident improves the connection, stabilizes the signal and increases data throughput. It is not magic. It is Multi-Polarized science. For a quick and easy evaluation, find areas where you typically encounter a weak or sporadic WiFi signal. Install the Trident on the router or your wireless device and go to the same areas. The signal will be more stable allowing even a weak signal to provide faster data throughput. The secret lies in the science of the multipolarization. With built in spatial and polarization diversity the Trident locks onto and reduces instantaneous signal loss which slows data throughput. By holding the signal wireless devices maintain data integrity and data transfer. Due to its high data content, streaming video provides the most dramatic results.

802.11G Range Extender Review

802.11G Range Extender

We bought three of these new at Best Buy, and have had to get Linksys to replace all three after approximately a year and a half. It's a pain to get through the RMA process, and now I have to try to get one of the replacements replaced. At the time, these were my only option. I am now going to try a Hawking. The reviews are much better for the Hawking repeaters.
I didn't have any trouble setting these up, but they just didn't last very long (in my opinion, a year or so isn't very long).
I do not recommend this product unless you need a quick and cheap range extender, just don't expect it to perform for very long.

General InformationManufacturer: LinksysManufacturer Part Number: WRE54GProduct Name: Wireless-G Range Expander Wireless BridgeMarketing Information:
Expand the range of your wireless network! The Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander is the easy way to increase the effective coverage of your wireless network. Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the Wireless-G Range Expander does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router, and it "bounces" the signals out to remote wireless devices.

This "relay station" or "repeater" approach saves wiring costs and helps to build wireless infrastructure by driving signals into even those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas where wireless coverage is spotty and cabling is impractical. The Range Expander is perfect to help cover large areas in multi-story homes, warehouse environments, public spaces, wireless "Hot Spots", and outdoor venues -- anywhere you need extra coverage for your wireless network.

I've had this product for a couple of months and am pleased to report that it works brilliantly. Installation couldn't be simpler. I plugged each of these into an outlet in the same room/same circuit and attached one end to a RJ45 Ethernet wall jack and the other to my DirecTV HR22 DVR. The DVR immediately saw that it had Internet access and was able to stream high definition movies (DirecTV's "whole home DVR" feature) anywhere in my house.
I had previously tried to stream high definition movies using aTRENDnet Wireless N Gaming Adapter TEW-647GA (Black) connected to my 802.11G network. The trendnet over 802.11g was not able to stream high definition content. Even when the trendnet was able to connect reliably, high def content streamed so poorly that it was unwatchable.
With the ZyXEL, high definition streams without any glitches! We are quite pleased as we had no other way to get an Internet connection to our HR22's location. The connection has been 24/7 reliable- we've never had to reset these or touch them in any way. It really was as simple plugging them in.
Note: I haven't tried running this over different circuits.
--------------------
9 month followup:
This product has worked flawlessly since the day it was installed. I've never had to reset them or mess with them in any ways. It's refreshing to find a product that "just works" in this age of complexity and "beta quality".

Average Reviews:

Despite what some folks may tell you, this product will definitely work (and work well) with the Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless 802.11b router. Thus, I echo the comments of poster "PC Hardware Fan" from South Carolina.
Here are the steps I took to make the Range Extender work:
1. D-Link customer support is 1-877-453-5465 (they're actually pretty nice and patient with novices like me)
2. Type http://192.168.1.1 into your Internet Explorer address bar and look for the LAN Mac Address for your Linksys router (do not write down the Wireless Mac Address; the LAN Mac Address is the first of the two on the Linksys set up page). While you're at it, also retrieve your WEP encryption key (if applicable). You'll need this info to configure your D-Link range extender.
3. Go to the D-Link website, go to Support and download the version 1.9 firmware for the DWL-800AP+ onto your computer's Desktop.
4. Plug in the D-Link wireless extender into a power outlet and connect an ethernet cable between it and the Linksys router.
5. Plug your laptop/desktop computer into the Linksys router (when configuring the D-Link, you'll need to use a "wired" connection, not a wireless connection.
6. In the Network Connections page (under Control Panel) of your computer, change the properties of your Ethernet connection (right-click on Properties, then click on TCP/IP and click on Properties) to have the same IP address range as the D-Link (I used 192.168.0.5). This involves changing the default from finding IP address automatically to the manual option (then, type in IP address indicated above).
7. Open Internet Explorer (you'll get an error page) and type in http://192.168.0.30. You'll get the D-Link setup page.
8. Under the Wireless Tab, input the Linksys LAN Mac address and WEP encryption key. Save your changes by clicking Apply.
9. Under the Admin tab, upload the version 1.9 firmware. Save your changes by clicking Apply.
10. Unplug D-Link from power outlet and from router. Keep unplugged for 30 seconds.
11. Go back into the Network Connections page (under Control Panel) and reset the configuration of your TCP/IP connection to find IP address automatically. Unplug your computer from router.
12. Move D-Link and computer to where you want to set them up (I suggest 50 feet away). Plug in D-Link into power outlet (discard ethernet cable).
13. On your computer, open up your wireless configuration utility and remove any pre-existing preferred wireless connections. Hit refresh 4-5 times. Go into wireless tab and uncheck WEP encryption key automatically saved and retype your WEP encryption key manually.
14. Enjoy your dramtically-improved wireless range.

Granted I didn't use the flimsy suction cups but drilled and attached this directly to a fence post. This, as well as a low-loss cable I had to buy from another site (note to all, Amazon does NOT sell a wire that will go from the back of a standard WiFi router, aka LinkSys, Netgear, et. al.), got the WiFi signal out of the house to a fencepost where I now am shooting 90% signal strength well over 100 yards where before I had 0%. In fact it's shooting that signal through a giant old house between my house and the structure I'm sending the signal to. It's fairly incredible for such a simple set up. The signal even is stronger in the house in general as an added bonus. If you're looking to shoot your WiFi signal over 100 yards to another building with this, and a third-party male to female low-loss wire, you'll be all set and in business.

I have my desktop close to my router but there is a wall in the way that would give me a very poor wi fi signal, I would only achieve two or maximum three bars in the internet access icon on my pc. I bought a linksys usb and it improved a little but not good enough to take advantage of my high speed internet access. After I moved up to windows seven, it was even worse. I decided to solve the problem once and for all and started searching on tne web for forums related to my problem. In the windows seven compatibility list I found out Hawkings was the best choice and then googled it to read excellente reviews. I purchased this Hawking product and installed it very easily. Since then i have the best signal at home, 5 bars on my internet icon. The only thing I recommend is that it if you are using two pcs connected to the same router via wifi, the pc that doesnt have the hawking antennae will have a bad connection, since the hawking is so good that it takes most of the router's signal. I highly recommend this product i was seriously thinking of relocating my pc in another place or even relocating my router to be next to my pc but then i found this wonderful antennae. Just great.

Airlink AP311W 802.11G Universal Wireless Repeater Review

Average Reviews:

I purchased this product to extend the range on an 802.11g network from an AT&T router to allow internet access in a back bedroom. Despite hours of trying to set it up, including hours on the phone with tech support, it would never work. It kept trying to use WPA encryption when the access point was only using WEP 64 bit encryption. I kept getting error messages that this repeater could not be used on this network. Tech support then kept telling me the problem was the router, and to call AT&T and have them reconfigure it. That was despite the fact that I have over ten other devices, including laptops, desktops, iphones, PDA's, etc. that access that network with no problem. Big help that was. I then took it to another house that just had 802.11b network, with no encryption. I thought maybe I could use it on this simple system. Same problem. It would never hook up. I put WEP encryption on the router but it would still never work. Tech support had me picking up my desktop computer and hauling it over to the router and running back and forth and all of it was gibberish. The "Indian" connection with the language difficulties did not help either. Save your money. This is a piece of junk.

Belkin F5D7132 Wireless-G Universal Range Extender Review

Belkin F5D7132 Wireless-G Universal Range Extender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have shared the same experience as the most helpful reviews here: this is a pain to install when you want to configure this Extender to be secure (so strangers can't mooch off of your internet or worse). On the other hand, once you have it set up, it works like a charm.
It's possible, but prepare to burn an hour or three. I would like to add some instructional steps, which are a variation of the very helpful ones already present here on Amazon.
Dummies Guide on How to set up the Extender with security turned on:
1. Completely ignore the instruction sheet that comes with the product. At first, I tried following it stubbornly despite reading these Amazon reviews, and I found that it is an embarrassment. Shame on you Belkin, for giving us so much unnecessary grief.
2. Find a computer in your home to use for this setup. Any computer (that isn't Vista) will do.
3. If this computer happens to be plugged into your router (I'm not talking about not the Extender), unplug it from the router. If this computer happens to have a wireless connection, disable the wireless connection.
4. Plug in the power cord for the Extender into the wall, then connect an ethernet cord (looks like a fat telephone cord) into the back of the Extender, then stick the other end into your computer. The "LAN" light will now light up. Just in case you're concerned, you can ignore the red "search" light that may blink.
5. Install the "Belkin Range Extender Utility" onto this computer. The installation CD will place a program in your Start->Programs menu once you run the install.
6. Go to start->settings->network connections. At this point the only enabled network connection should be Local Area Network (or Local Connection... the name may differ slightly for you). If anything else is enabled, disable it. Right click Local Area Network and select Properties. You're now looking for a new window to pop up that lists a bunch of internet-sounding words like Network or QoS. Look for the item called Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Double click that.
7. Select manual IP, and enter 192.168.2.100
8. The subnet mask will get filled out automatically. Ignore the gateway. Hit OK, you're finished.
9. Start up the Belkin utility, and hit "refresh" if nothing shows up on the list of detected Extenders. If you're lucky, you will see the Extender show up, and you can now click "Web Management".
10. If no items show up on the Belkin Utility's list, or an item does show up but the "web management" icon is unclickable, then repeat steps 6-9 but enter the IP address 192.168.1.100 instead. Then the Extender should show up.
11. Finally, once you are able to click "Web Management", it will bring you to a webpage that is very much like a Router setup page. The details of what you need to do here can be found in instructional docs on the web elsewhere. The basic idea is that you want to copy pretty much everything over to be identical to what your router settings are. The only exception is possibly the SSID of the Belkin Extender. Depending on your preference, you may want to choose a different name for it just so you can confirm that its really working later on.
12. Save those settings (there's a systems tab at the bottom of the web management panel that allows you to save the settings into a file as a backup).
13. Unplug the Extender from the computer, unplug the power for the Extender, and move the extender to wherever you want. Plug the power back in.
14. Go back to steps 6-9. Remove the manual IP configuration for your Local Area Connection, and revert the panels back to the way they were (which is probably "automatically obtain ip address"). Hit OK. Enable all your network connections if you disabled them in step 6.
15. You should now be able to use your wireless connection to see the Extender under its fresh new SSID. Enjoy.
A version of the above for those that are network-saavy:
1. Disconnect all wireless from your computer, then connect your computer directly to the Extender as if it were a router. Power up the Extender.
2. Manually specify your computer's IP address to be 192.168.2.xxx with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Yes, I know this step is weird. I'll explain the reason for it in step#4.
3. Install the Belkin Network utility. Its a simple executable. Start it up. It's purpose is to scan for the Extender, provided that your Extender is directly wired to your computer (which we did in step 1).
4. You should see your Extender show up in the utility. If the Extender does not show up or the "Web Management" button is greyed out, this is because your computer and the Belkin Extender are on different subnets. The Belkin Extender is usually shipped from the warehouse hardwired to the IP Address 192.168.2.254. What??? When you plug your computer into the Extender, you need to hardwire your computer to be on the same subnet so the stupid utility will work. Hence, since the factory setting for the Extender is 192.168.2.254, hardwiring your computer's IP to 192.168.2.100 will get the utility to connect to the Extender. However, if for some awful reason your Extender is hardwired to some other IP Address (which is configurable once you get to step#5), you need to change your computer's IP Address to have a value that matches the Extender's new subnet. In other words, if the Extender IP somehow changes to 192.168.5.254, you should change your computer IP address to 192.168.5.100
5. Once you click "Web Management" you can configure the Extender via a browser window. Replicate your router's settings here (they all need to match the original router's, with the exception of the Extender's SSID).
6. Hit Save, then unplug the Extender's power cord and ethernet, and then move it to wherever you would like. Power it up again.
7. Remove your computer's manual IP address. You're now officially done.
*As a note, I had occasional connection problems when I had my Belkin router & extender encryption set to WPA-PSK. I just switched my encryption to WEP and now it is fine. Not everyone has this problem.
Up this review, if you found it useful. I want to see other people spared from the excessive pain the rest of us have already experienced!

I bought this phone because I needed a phone that would give me better range than my panasonic 5.8gHz model without the interference with my computer equipment. I live in a pretty good sized house, ( 3 stories, 6000 sq. ft., lots of steel too). My 5.8 gHz model didn't quite cut it for range from one side of the house to the other. I really started seeing problems when they installed my wireless network for the house. I did some research and found out that the interference issue was common with 5.8 gHz and the wireless router because they operate on the same bandwidth and therefore can have some interference issues. As for the range, I was out of luck until I found this phone that has an included " range extender ". Set-up for the phone was very easy, ( 6 steps including " insert batteries and charge for 7 hours"). I put the range extender at about the distance where my 5.8 gHz started to fuzz out. This is easily installed as well. All you need is a power outlet, no phone jack. After the charging period, I tried the phone everywhere in the house with no issues. I can even go down to the lake to watch the kids with no issues. Also, from reading the directions, I noted that you can add one more range extender to increase your range even more. I think panasonic really got the idea right when they made this phone and included the range extender. I would have to say that my only disappointment is the handset display size and that it is not in color. If you are looking for a solid phone system with great range and no computer interference issues, you can't go wrong with this phone. Buy it! You won't be sorry.

NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit XAVNB2001 Review

NETGEAR Powerline AV 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit XAVNB2001

This product is great. It does exactly what it is supposed to with excellent quality. If you use a Mac with OS X and an Airport router, however, it will be tricky to change the wireless network name from NETGEAR and apply security settings, since the Netgear Powerline utility for Mac is lacking (it doesn't give you the ip address) and the default ip address for each extender is different. Fortunately, I figured it out, though. Here is what you have to do:
Set up the Netgear Powerline by plugging in the Adaptor into the wall and connect it to a LAN port on your router. Next, plug the Extender into a wall outlet in the area that you want a better signal. After doing this, you will notice the network "NETGEAR" show up in your Airport list in the top right corner of the screen. Connect to the network and visit a site or two to make sure that the connection is how you want it. Next, open the Airport Utility and go to the Manual settings for your Airport router. Click on Advanced, then the Logging & Statistics tab. Next, click on the Logs & Statistics button on the bottom of the page. Click the "DHCP Clients" tab and you will see a number of devices that are communicating with your router. The one with the same MAC Address as your Netgear Wireless Extender (its MAC address can be found on the back of it) is your Wireless Extender. Note its IP Address and type it into your Internet browser. This will take you to the Settings page for your Netgear Powerline kit.
Besides this ignorant lack of process that will probably take up many peoples' time, the product is excellent.
Enjoy.

This was a used product but it looked like new as stated in the ad. The D-Link range extender arrived on time but there were no instructions or even a link to guide me where to find a manual or anything.
A friend of mine who is versed in setting these things up spent some time setting up the system so it would see and read between my D-Link hub and other PC in our home. We were able to establish that it was working on the system but it never improved the signal, in fact it seemed to slow things down.

Hawking Hi-Speed 54M Wireless G Router (HWR54G) Review

Hawking Hi-Speed 54M Wireless G Router (HWR54G)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this one as a replacement for a wireless D-Link DI-784 router that was glitchy and could not be programmed at all. And this was quite a change! While this router is not too sophisticated in terms of either available wireless security protocols or some other features, it has everything one needs to create a home network, and more.
Namely, compared to similar wireless routers from better known brands (DLink, NetGear, Linksys) this one:
1. Is PROGRAMMABLE. That is, it does not stop working or deos not develop glitshes when you change modes and parameters. (Many others present you with a whole spectrum of glitches when you start changing default settings.)
2. Supports any Internet connections, not only cable/DLS. You CAN use it with a leased line, you CAN connect it to another router with a static address, etc.
3. You CAN assign it a static IP address, and it works. (MOST others don't.)
4. It does support opening additional ports for your special applications (such as IP telephony - see below), and it works. (Many others don't do it properly.)
5. You can switch the DHCP feature off, and the router still works. (Many others don't.)
6. VPN pass-through works, and one can really connect to your work networks from home without glitches.
SUMMARY: I have successfully set the router up so that it currently supports 3 wired computers, 1 wireless, and a Vonage IP phone router. I couldn't do it with other routers from manufacturers mentioned above, because all of them were glitchy and actually could not work with static IP addresses and/or other routers and/or DHCP off, etc.
All wireless features work fine, and the speed/range are acceptable. One can use a long WEP key (26 Hexadecimal characters), and communication is fast and stable.
For those who are interested in configuring IP telephony: Vonage offers great phone plans, but it currently sends you a regular Linksys router of of its own with 3 RJ45 ports and 2 phone ports. So IF you have more than 3 computers and/or computers using wireless, you need to set up TWO routers to work together. And I succeeded in doing this with the Hawking one. Namely, I have connected the Hawking HWR54G to the cable modem, and it is the "primary" router with DHCP enabled. All 3 wired computers are connected to it as well as the wireless laptop.
The "secondary" Vonage router is connected to the primary one using a STATIC IP address (outside of the range used by DHCP). That way you can guarantee that it will always have the same address irrespective of the number of reboots. This configuration makes it possible to MAKE calls, but not receive them, because the system (primary router) doesn't know where to send incoming call data packets, and also blocks some of the ports by default (firewall function).
So I opened the IP telephony ports on the Hawking router and set up re-routing of these data packets to the Vonage Linksys router at its static IP address. Also, I had to open port ranges used by Vonage by adding these to the list of custom applications. Ports to be opened on the router/firewall:
69-69 (Vonage 1)
5060-5063 (Vonage 2)
10000-20000 (Vonage 3)
All three apps should be checked.
That way the phone works both ways, i.e. you can receive calls as well!
On the negative side, the only thing that I noticed was as follows: from time to time (once a day if you work intensively for the whole day) the router can "hang", and wireless networking stops working. As soon as you unplug it and then plug it in again, it reboots, and everything works fine. Nothing else is needed (no computer reboots). Generally speaking, this is quite a good result compared to some other models, and I can live with it. Recommended.
