Cisco-Linksys WAPPOE12 12 Volt Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit Review

I used this to allow me to place my wireless access point in a location that does not currently have a local power source. Suffice it to say, this product is a cheaper investment then hiring an electrician.
As noted in the cons, you may want to limit the use of this to 10/100 speed products. This may not be the best solution for your router/gateways.
It's very easy to install and works perfect. I like the fact that it came with it's own power supply. It also came with a cat 5e cable. Now for the pros and cons...
Pros
============
- Easy to install
- Perfect compliment to wireless access points
- Very inexpensive option, when compared to installing a new outlet
Cons
============
- It's heavy and more bulky then I expected. It seems unusual for just sending a DC current
- I wish it didn't have the 'built-in' cat 5 whips. I would have preferred that they supply the whips, with an option to use something else. It's mostly an issue on the switch side. I have this dongle hanging from the switch and it wants to pull the switch off the table. No issue if your switch is somehow mounted
- It appears to be only compatible with Linksys products. Not that big of an issue, but if I wanted to use a different brand access point, this goes out the window
- Appears to only transmit at 10/100. So if you have a 802.11 N AP, you may not be able to take advantage of the full speed.
Although my cons list is larger then the pros, I would still recommend this product for anyone that would like to move their WAP to a remote location.

-The Linksys 12 Volt Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit lets you put your access points almost anywhere, by removing the requirement of nearby power outlets. By using the existing Category 5 Ethernet cabling to deliver power to many standard 12 volt access points and other network devices, you save the time, hassle, and expense of running AC power to the access point s installation location. -The best position for a wireless access point is usually on the ceiling, in the center of the area to be covered. Second best would be high on a nearby wall. Unfortunately, theres usually no easily accessible AC power plugs available in these locations. With the Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit, installing the access point in these preferred spots becomes far less trouble. -The 12 Volt Power Over Ethernet Adapter Kit is a two piece set.

PlugLink Ethernet Adapter Review

I received the PlugLink from my local DSL provider (AT&T) as part of their networking kit, and I was amazed how easy it was to set up. All you have to do is plug in one PlugLink to an active Ethernet connection and a second PlugLink to your remote device. It worked like a charm. The only stipulation is that it doesn't seem to work on a power strip or the like; it must be connected directly to a wall power source for it to work properly.

I've used Cyberpower UPS for years as I live in a suburban area subject to frequent blackouts lasting from several seconds to several days. I use Cyberpower UPS to keep my TiVo functional, keep my FIOS modem / wireless router running, and keep my iMac bittorrent server running. I've never been disappointed in Cyberpower's products and the single time I needed warranty service it was rapid and complete.
My brother has multiple handicaps and uses his laptop as his primary entertainment point. Recently his area (not far from my home) has begun suffering blackouts of several minutes to several hours duration. He asked me to select an UPS to keep his DSL modem / wireless router running. Of course I turned to Amazon and selected this model from Cyberpower.
The Westell's wall wart consumes around 7 watts. When this arrived, I charged it for 8 hours then pulled the plug with a 15 CFL lamp on the backup outlet. An hour later the lamp was still lit and the UPS wasn't indicating pending shutdown.
As to the green claim, it stands up. I am a 56 year old tech geek and purchased the P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor from Amazon back when it was introduced. I used it to measure the watts drawn while charging then in battery maintenance. This unit does consume far less power maintaining the battery as compared to the standard CPS425SL.
Some of my Cyberpower UPS are more than 7 years old and only now are needing their batteries replaced. Battery replacement is simply removing 6 or more screws from the bottom of the UPS models I own, opening it up, unplugging the old battery, then reversing the process to install the new battery. It takes less than 5 minutes from the time I unplug it from the electric outlet until it's plugged back in and ready for service. Please be sure to observe all safety precautions when replacing the battery.
I also own UPS systems by APC and recommend them also. They offer higher output with less runtime and I use them for my quad core systems.
For the more than 2 hour to multiple day outages I purchased an ETQ generator from Amazon and a Reliance Controls transfer switch. I recommend these products for extended outages.

Appearance - Good looking compact unit with fittings and exceptionally long USB cable (about 12') ****
Condition - Arrived damaged - the unit rattled and the connector to fix the USB to had fallen inside. These issues were fixed by a local repair man after the seller authorized opening without voiding warranty. **
Ease of set up - On Windows 7 it was plug and play - we used the CD on an older machine, both were simple and found the unit quickly and easily. *****
Signal strength - Definately line of sight - but almost on an if you can see it, you can use it. Effectively we'd say about a mile in marina settings to close to 2 miles, maybe slightly more across open sea. As a set difference, with the onboard PC WIFI, one signal recieved, with this unit (in a 3rd world country) 9 useable signals recieved. ****
Software - Simple, graphic, easy to understand - just runs in the background, on top, or shut it down and use Windows. *****
Drop Outs - Zero to date (in 5 days) versus 10 - 12 an hour with the onboard (laptop builtin) cards.
