Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server Review

The tech support was prompt and knowledgeable. The unit has good range which seems to be limitied more by the class of the PDA that is trying to acess it.
HOWEVER this product has a VERY serious design deficiency that makes it UNSUITABLE FOR USE at any price!!!! Belkin tech support has confirmed that there is no way to reset the unit to the original factory settings if you can not acess it via the built in web manager. Belkin tech support also confirmed that there is also a flaw in the unit that will cause some user passwords to not be accepted. Once this happens, this will essentially require returning the unit for complete replacement. I know of no other networking product that has such a serious design flaw (all other networking devices I am aware of have at least a reset button somewhere or a "power on" sequence to handle these inevitable situations). It also makes the unit unusable for any scenario where if you make a change to the settings, you can not afford to be without it for the time to swap it out.
An obvious problem for you, me and Amazon here!

Early Adopters Pick: March 2003 The Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point allows you to transfer data to other Bluetooth-enabled devices including computers, PDAs and printers as well as to gain Internet access through a connected network.
Offering access to local area networks (LANs) with devices enabled with Bluetooth technology such as Pocket PC PDAs, Palm PDAs, notebooks, desktop PCs, and mobile phones, the Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server offers connectivity to the Internet, corporate LAN, and home networks. It also enables any USB printer to be accessed via a Bluetooth connection when connected through the Access Point's USB print server ports. At the same time, the product functions as a USB print server where the printer can be visible to the entire wired LAN, which allows the connected USB printer to be accessed by any client on the wired LAN. Up to seven users can simultaneously share the Internet, the LAN, or print to a USB printer via a Bluetooth connection. It features two USB type A connectors, an RJ45 Ethernet port, and the front has seven multicolored LEDs that depict connection activity quickly and easily.
The Access Point requires no manual configuration. It can be installed and start running in under two minutes, needing only a power source and an Ethernet connection, according to the manufacturer. The IP is obtained automatically via DHCP upon power-up or can be set by any Bluetooth client.

Cisco-Linksys USBBT100 Bluetooth USB Adapter Review

If you own a bluetooth enabled phone, this is a MUST-HAVE accessory! I've owned this for two weeks and here's my experience w/it so far.
Installation was a snap! I am using Windows XP SP1. I downloaded the latest drivers from Linksys website and during the install process, it prompted me to plug in the dongle, then it finished and was up and working! That easy! I've read about others having driver problems w/other lesser name brands (Belkin, etc) but Linksys truly does live up to its name. I've also installed drivers on my laptop so I now have a Bluetooth enabled laptop also! It's easy switching the dongle from desktop to laptop because of the USB connector. Pairing w/my Sony Ericsson T610, I now have wireless internet access on my laptop anywhere I can get a signal on my cell phone!
Syncing w/Outlook is much faster than through IRDA and sending pictures/ringtones/games to and from the phone is a lot more convenient too because it doesn't require line of sight the way IRDA does.
The specs claim 100m but you've gotta remember that's unobstructed. I live in a 2800sq ft home w/two floors and this unit still picked up a weak to fair signal from one end of my house to the other. I would get strong signals from about 3/4's of the distance or closer.
You can probably save $10-15 going w/a generic or lesser name brand but full driver support from generics may be a hit-and-miss game. To me, paying a bit extra for fully compliant driver support and no installation headaches is certainly worth it! Plus, it looks cool and has that antenna for better range.

History has shown that we Mac owners tend to get left out in the rain when it comes to product compatibility. Naturally, I was initially skeptical when I placed my order for this little dongle. Faced with a MacBook Pro Unibody hosting a fried WiFi card and a $100 repair bill (not including labor), I was looking for every, and any, solution available. Call me surprised.
The dongle itself is cast in a slightly cheap-ish white plastic housing with a built-in green LED status light. It looks robust enough to take some good whacks, but probably not a direct drop (though I doubt any USB would). It extends about 7mm out from the side and is very secure. No wiggle and a firm fit in the port. The included mini install CD won't work in a slot-loaded drive, but their website was very user friendly and had downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Once downloaded, the setup was very simple and had drivers for both PPC and Intel machines. The only caveat is that the Apple AirPort Utility is bypassed while their own Wireless Network Utility is used instead. Connection to my home's AirPort network was very fast and, dare I say it, quicker than the built-in WiFi, while actual throughput was identical. Range was also on-par with my prior 802.11N setup.
On the whole, I'd highly recommend this adapter to anyone looking at a steep laptop repair bill!
